Transfer from First and
Primary School to Middle
Moving from First Schools and Primary Schools to Middle School is an
exciting time for our children. They have new uniform, meet new friends and
have new opportunities for learning. They also face the challenge of moving
between specialist classrooms and meeting a range of different teachers.
Due to the number of students at Middle School, the Head Teacher or Deputy
Head Teacher are rarely the first people to approach if you have a question
because they will only have to pass the message to the colleague responsible for
that part of the school’s work.
So, this is a rough guide to Middle School staff with delegated responsibilities.
If you need to get in touch, please contact your child’s class teacher or if it is a
specialist subject query, the member of staff concerned, in the first instance by
telephoning the school office. Please explain the reason why you need to contact
staff (basic details are necessary) and our experienced staff in Reception will
then contact the appropriate staff on your behalf. In most cases, the staff
member will call you to discuss further or to arrange a mutually convenient
appointment. We understand that our parents are busy people too so, in this
way, we can avoid parents arriving at school to find that staff are unavailable
to meet with them because they are teaching or engaged in activities such as
planning meetings at other collaboration schools.
We hope that you have a good evening and that your child enjoys the many
opportunities that life at Penkridge Middle School will bring.

Personal Property
All personal property must be clearly marked with your name. Do not bring
unnecessary valuables to school or more money than you need. The school cannot
accept any responsibility if your property is lost, damaged or stolen. This includes
jewellery, which is not allowed for safety reasons, as detailed below. Musical
instruments should be insured (by parents) against accidental damage or loss.
Help yourself by:
Giving anything very valuable to the School Office for safe keeping at the
start of the day, including mobile phones.
DO NOT leave money unattended in coat pockets or in your bag.
If you lose something valuable:
Check your own pockets and bag again carefully. Did you bring it with you to
school or is it still at home?
Carefully look around and retrace your steps with a friend.
Ask permission from a teacher to check if your valuables have been handed
into the School Office.
Check with P.E. staff for lost P.E. kit and clothes
REMEMBER ALWAYS LOOK AFTER YOUR THINGS! Help others by
handing in lost property.
FOR SAFETY REASONS, NO JEWELLERY IS ALLOWED, EXCEPT FOR A
WATCH AND ONE SMALL SAFE SET OF SLEEPER STUDS IN THE EAR
LOBES.

Anti-bullying Policy – Students responsibilities are:
If you are being bullied or you know/suspect someone else is being bullied,
you must tell someone at school as soon as possible (Please make it clear to
the teacher if you only suspect something).
You should not say anything nasty back or be violent back.
Once a situation has been dealt with try not to hold a grudge against that
person, but always tell a teacher straight away if the problem
continues.
If the problem is cyber-bullying, don’t reply, get a print out and block the
person if possible, as well as reporting the problem.
Remember, it is normal to sometimes fall out with friends. This is not
bullying. Try to sort this out by talking sensibly, and ask a teacher or parent
to help you sort it out if you feel that it is getting out of hand.
We are currently changing our behaviour system.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the timings of the school day?
Children must be on the playground for 8.45 am. Registration is at 8.50 am.
Staff are not on duty until 8.30 am, so children should not arrive before
then unless they are coming to #SORTED before school clubs. More
information about #SORTED can be found on page 18 of this booklet.
If children arrive after 8.50 am, they MUST report to the Office so that we
can ensure they are registered. School finishes for children at 3.30 pm,
although many clubs and activities go on after the end of the school day.
When is the Office open?
Our Office is open from 8.15 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Thursday and 8.15
am to 4.00 pm on Friday. Our answer phone is always on when the Office is
closed for you to leave a message. Be aware that the Office is always very
busy at the start and end of the school day, so please bear with us at those
peak times!
How do I pay for school dinners?
Students can have a hot school dinner or bring sandwiches. You can pay
daily, weekly or half termly. Payments can be made using Parentpay, log
on details will be provided by the school office. school meal is £2.20.

What if my child forgets to bring something to school?
From the start of Middle School we encourage children to be more independent.
Please encourage your child to pack their own bag the night before school. If you
have any queries over what they need the following day, please do not hesitate to
phone the Class Teacher. If they do forget to bring something, please bring it into
the Office and we will do our very best to get it to your child.
What about mobile phones?
Students are not allowed to have mobile phones in school. If you wish your child to
bring their phone to school, for safety reasons, please sign the Parental Consent
Form. All mobiles must be switched off and handed in before morning registration.
Phones MUST be labelled with child’s name and Year Group. Children can collect
their phones as they leave school.
Can I buy a school tie at PMS?
These are available from the School Office at £4 each.
What PE kit will my child need?
Details of PE kit are on page 8 .PE kit can ONLY be purchased from Crested
Schoolwear. If your child need anything different or extra the PE staff will let you
know. It is vital that all equipment, uniform, coats and PE kit is clearly labelled
with your child’s name.

What if my child is ill or injured during the school day?
We have first aiders in school who will deal with your child if they are sent to
the medical room during the day. A first aider will assess your child acting
within the scope of their role. Most children require a minimum of attention
and will go back to carry on with their lessons. If the first aiders are con-
cerned, we will use our contact numbers to discuss the situation with you. In
an emergency we would call an ambulance and contact you immediately. We
don’t inform parents of every small bump or graze. However, if your child
receives a bump to the head, we will notify you.
What about the first day of term?
Everyone at Penkridge Middle School is looking forward to seeing your child
happy and ready to learn on the first day of term. We start back at school at
8.45 am on Wednesday 5h September 2018. All children are to meet on the
playground (tennis courts) where they will be met by their teachers. Staff
will be on duty to guide your children into school and through their first day
at school. Please drop your child off at the bottom of the drive. Students will
walk up the drive on to the playground independently.
What if my child needs to take medication during the day?
If your child needs to take medication during the school day, please can you
come into school to complete a medication form and ensure that all medica-
tion is clearly marked. Further details of our medication policy can be found
on our school website.

Is there a School Newsletter?
L’Hebdo (French –The Weekly News) is our newsletter that will be
emailed directly to parents to avoid it being lost or left crumpled in the
bottom of a school bag. L’hebdo is sent out on the last day of the week,
usually Friday. It will contain details of school trips, messages from the
Head Teacher, music and sports fixtures etc. and is an essential read for all
parents. Please ask your child for their copy or let the Office know if you
would like this to be emailed to you. Please provide us your email address
on our consent form if you wish to receive it.
How will school keep in contact with you?
In case we need to be in touch with you it is essential that we have an up-to
date emergency contact details from the first day your child starts at
Middle School. If your contact details are different or change over the
summer please let us know in writing on the first day of term. We will send
home a contact sheet for you to check your details at the start of term.
Please return it to the School Office.
What if my child is absent or has a medical appointment?
Please ring school as soon as possible before 9.00 am if you know that your
child is going to be absent and leave a message if the Office is not yet open
or the lines are busy (01785 413400 option 1). If your child needs to go out
of school for an appointment, please write a note to their Class Teacher or
put a note in their organiser. Please tell your child to come to reception at
the appointed time you will collect them.

Out of hours provision #SORTED
Our brilliant before and after school club is open to all Penkridge Middle School students from 7.30am through to 6.00pm offering excellent provision for work-ing parents.
Our trained play leaders, Charlotte and Kelly, run a series of engaging and age-appropriate activities that both parents and children love. We also provide breakfast, snacks and light suppers.
Session times and costs
Morning Session: 7.30am – 8.30am including breakfast, £3.50
Breakfast Session: 8.00am - 8.30am
Afternoon Short Session: 3.30pm – 4.30pm including a drink and biscuit, £4.00
Afternoon Full Session: 3.30pm – 6.30pm including a drink and biscuit and light meal, £7.50
