Is a penguin a bird? A penguin is a flightless bird, with flippers for wings. Where do they live? Penguins live in the southern hemisphere, but live in different climates. Some live in the freezing Antarctica, while some live in warmer locations. What do they eat? Penguins eat fish, squid and krill Do Penguins lose feathers? Yes, they go through a ‘catastrophic moult’ meaning they lose all their feathers in a very short period. This is because they are not waterproof during this time and cannot hunt in the water. Fun fact! Their black and white feathers help to camouflage them while they’re in the ocean. Deeper predators look up, but can only see the white of the penguin, which looks just like the sky! Fun fact! The Gentoo penguin is the fastest penguin swimmer at 36 Km/hr. We have these fast swimmers at SEA LIFE Melbourne! Penguins Fact sheet
