Penguin Class Home LearningTERM 5 WEEK 2
Welcome to Week 2 of Home Learning! I really hope you are finding the activities useful and finding what works for you.
This weeks plan consists of new learning ideas for Arithmetic, Phonics, Writing and Maths, but the Foundation Subjects change on a fortnightly basis and therefore you can have a go at
anything that you didn’t mange to complete in Week 1.
Don’t forget to have a look at the Penguin Class page on the website to see how our caterpillars are growing and changing. I’m trying to think of names for them, so all suggestions welcome
Thank you to all of you who are using the class email page to send me updates…but likewise, don’t worry if this is a job too far!
I’m at the end of an email if you need further clarification, support, or simply just to say ‘hello’. Stay in touch.
Thursday Friday Each day, attempt the 10 questions. Children normally
take between 5-15 minutes to complete all 10. Each set
follows a pattern-can they spot it?
The questions progress each day, so if they find one day
challenging it is a good idea to stop and create similar questions the next day rather than moving
on.
Children may find it helpful to draw the numbers using
tens/ones jottings. They can then draw the addition tens being
added and then count them all to find the total. They should notice that the ones column
never changes when we +/- 10.
1. 18 + 10 = 28 1. 13 + 10 = 23
2. 38 + 20 = 58 2. 33 + 20 = 53
3. 28 + 10 = 38 3. 23 + 10 = 33
4. 48 + 30 = 78 4. 43 + 30 = 73
5. 68 + 20 = 88 5. 63 + 20 = 83
6. 18 + 30 = 48 6. 13 + 30 = 43
7. 78 + 10 = 88 7. 73 + 10 = 83
8. 58 + 30 = 88 8. 53 + 30 = 83
9. 98 + 20 = 118 9. 93 + 20 = 113
10. 88 + 10 = 98 10. 83 + 10 = 93

White Rose have created a 12 week Home Learning Timetable to support schools in delivering and consolidating the key areas of Maths during this time. This 12 week plan will ensure that children revisit
some of the key areas that they have already learnt in Terms 1-4 and introduce them to any key concepts that they will not have yet been taught (that were planned for Term 5 and 6).
We, as a school, plan to begin following this plan from Week 3 (next week’s Home Learning) to coincide with White Rose withdrawing some of their online resources.
This will mean that for this week you have the choice to either use the White Rose online learning videos and activities, or complete the activities in this pack that I have planned for you.
From Week 3, we will all use White Rose (you will watch the daily video, if you can, and then complete the activity that I will attach in the Week 3 Home Learning Pack- as these activities will no longer be
available without a subscription)
Daily, please try and complete the ‘Flashback 4’ (Week 2- as this is Week 2 of home learning- not lockdown!) to help recap and consolidate prior learning.
These are great online as there is a verbal accompaniment, but if tablet time is at a premium, I have copied an image of these below.
Read and look at the pictures on Page 20 and the sentences on Page 21.Cut/match/order/stick them using your knowledge about the life cycle of a butterfly.

A SPaG paper has been set on www.SPaG.com for you to complete if you wish.Week 1: Grammar (C)Week 2: Suffixes and Prefixes (A)
Please email me at [email protected] and I will email you your login details.
First, the female Monarch butterfly lays lots of tiny eggs on a leaf. She chooses a milkweed plant as she knows that the tiny caterpillar will want to eat this after hatching.
After 4-5 days, the tiny caterpillar begins to hatch. It nibbles its way out of the shell and eats the egg shell as it’s full of nutrients.
Next, the caterpillar begins eating. It eats and grows so quickly that it sheds its skin several times.
Then the caterpillar sheds its skin for the final time and finds a safe, shady spot to build its chrysalis. It hangs from a leaf for several days. Inside a magical transformation called metamorphosis is happening!
Soon after, the transformation is complete and you can begin to see the beautiful wings through the shell of the chrysalis. The butterfly slowly emerges, but its not ready to fly yet. It pumps blood around its body and waits for its crumpled wings to dry.
Finally, the life cycle is complete and the adult butterfly is ready to begin the life cycle all over again!

Reading VIPERSWhen reading with your child, below are some ideas of questions that you may ask them about the text using our ‘Reading VIPERS’. I is for Infer, so this week really focus on encouraging your child to ‘read between the lines’ using the questions below to guide your discussion.
Below is a link to a great online resources for age-appropriate reading books, linked to your child’s coloured reading band. Go to https://connect.collins.co.uk/school/Portal.aspxClick on the Teacher portal and enterUsername: [email protected]: Parents20!LoginClick on ‘Collins Big Cat’ option and then select your child’s coloured book band level from the side of the screen. Children can click through the pages, use the pause tool whilst reading it independently, and then play it to let the narrator read it to them. One finished, they can access the questions page to check their understanding of what they have read.
We didn’t get to find out the answer to all of our key questions about plants. Can you research the answers to any?
