Principle of utility: Maximize good
▪The greatest happiness of the whole community, ought to be the end or object of pursuit. The right and proper end of government in every political community, is the greatest happiness of all the individuals of which it is composed, say, in other words, the greatest happiness of the greatest number
Critical
▪Utilitarianism holds that we can not simply accept the moral norms that exist. For example, sex before marriage. For adherents of utilitarianism, sex before marriage is not necessarily bad. Should be analyzed first whether the usefulness of pre-marital sex. Whether as a result of either caused premarital sex was greater than the consequences. If as a result of a greater good then premarital sex was not only not be prohibited, but must be done. If the bad consequences of pre-marital sex was larger then the mandatory pre-marital sex is forbidden.
Rationalistic
▪Rational that have a definition that is acceptable to the mind and the mind can be rationalized according to the ability of the brain. Utilitarianism does not accept any moral norms that exist. He was questioned and it assumes the role of the ratio. Utilitarianism is rational because he questioned whether an action is useful or not.
Teological
▪Utilitarianism was teleological because it was seen as an act either of its purpose. That is an action that has a goal in itself so it can be considered good.
Bentham’s Principle
▪By the principle of utility is meant that principle which approves or disapproves of every action whatsoever, according to the tendency it appears to have to augment or diminish the happiness of the party whose interest is in question: or, what is the same thing in other words to promote or to oppose that happiness
John Stuart Mill Principle
▪“The creed which accepts as the foundation of morals, Utility, or the Greatest Happiness Principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness, wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness.”
Weakness utilitarian theory
▪ Utilitarianism presupposes that things like happiness, utility, pleasure and pain is measurable. Yet in reality, we do not bias the measure flavor. We can not equate happiness with others
▪ Minority rights can be violated by the concept of utilitarianism.
