Normally our summer issue cover features the winners of our back-to-back Specialties but that was postponed until 2021 And our MatchFun Fair with all of its wonderful photo opportunities was also put off until next year But that doesnrsquot stop us all from creating wonderful photos of our dogs in the fine spring and summer weather Many thanks to all who submitted photos of their corgis for the cover and inside this issue Sherrie Biernacki Penny Ford-Bezdikian Julie Dillingham Thyra Harris Kathy Kelly Bran-don Pfeffer and Carol Schwartz

Even though some of our major events were canceled this issue is still full of interesting and valuable information and articles While we canrsquot show our dogs some have continued their breeding programs Judy Bolin interviewed two of our breeders on what they look for in choosing a show quality puppy And while many performance events have been canceled AKC has been creating a new way to compete virtually in Tricks Rally and Agility The Tide has an article with more information on these In AKC alerts there is information on webinars and the virtual Top Dog Challenge for Conformation that was held in early June And as some are carefully

going back to in-person events AKC has developed Best Practices safety papers Finally we are still running flyers for our Agility and Fast CAT events because they are still happening Of course both events will follow AKC Best Practices guidelines

PRESIDENTrsquoS MESSAGE

The middle of March saw life as we knew it change dramat-ically CoronavirusCovid 19 saw to that Most states in the mid-Atlantic region issued stay-at-home orders I for one have been working from home since March and am not certain when I will be returning to the office

Unfortunately due to the virus we had to cancel our Specialty and the MatchFun Fair At this time the Agillity trial is a go In addition the Fast CAT will be held in October We held our first virtual general membership meeting on June 20 These are trying times and we all must just go with the flowI hope everyone stays safe --Michele

Before Puppies Are Born

The goal of responsible breeders is to improve their breed and especially to improve what that breeder has Although breeders know there is no such thing as a ldquoperfect dogrdquo the goal is to strive as close to perfection as possible

The breed Standard is an awesome guide to what an ideal Pembroke should be If you canrsquot get your hands on The New Illustrated Study of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Standard you can view our Standard online at wwwpwccaorgabout-pembrokesakc-breed-standard The illustrated standard discusses everything from general ap-pearance size proportion substance head eyes ears nose neck topline body tail forequarters feet hindquarters coat color gait to temperament

Using the Standard the potential brood bitch is critically evaluated to see what her weaknesses might be Health tests are done on the bitch Pedigrees are studied Care-ful thought is given to the needs in the kennel Is the breeder looking for that special male andor female puppy(ies)

Then a search begins to locate a stud that could improve that bitch The stud should also have passed health tests and ideally the breeder has seen what he has produced

in other litters When an ldquoideal materdquo is found that has also passed the health tests the breeder must secure permission to use the stud

Once the puppies have arrived the evaluation fun begins Which ones will be show quality

Shawn Michaelrsquos Point of View

Shawn Michael (Lost River) has been in Pembrokes for over 25 years and has been a breeder for over 20 years She has received the AKC Breeder of Merit and belongs to Catactin Kennel Club Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America and Chesapeake Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club Shawn is currently serving on the board of all these clubs except Cardigan Welsh Corgi Club of America

Shawn said she starts watching the puppies at birth and when they are three to four weeks old until she places them at 10 to 12 weeks old she pays particular attention to their movement and how they interact Sometimes she will run with a few puppies until they are 14 to 16 weeks old before making a final decision on which puppies she might keep

When they are old enough Shawn places the puppies in an x-pen and watches how they interact with her other pup-pies family and friends ldquoTemperament and personality are really importantrdquo she said ldquoYou need a connection with the puppy If you donrsquot have it itrsquos an uphill battle in the ring and itrsquos usually not worth itrdquo A puppy picks you she said

Puppies need to be handled constantly ldquoIf you pick up one touch them all even if itrsquos just a short time for each puppyrdquo Shawn said

Look at their structure and head piece See if they are following the Breed Standard

As the puppies get older Shawn watches their movement when they are out in the yard

A Puppy Party can help during the evaluation process When puppies are nine weeks old invite a few breeder friends over and put the puppies outside in an x-pen Stack the first puppy on the table and stay quiet letting others put their hands on each puppy and comment Then have the group line up first second third and fourth picks and determine who are pets

Shawn said she had a tri-colored puppy that had no flash but did a perfect stack stayed in the back of the litter but wasnrsquot reserved She was fascinated and continued to watch that puppy even though others didnrsquot see what she was starting to see in that puppy Eventually that puppy became part of the duo Donnie and Marie

ldquoFind out what best meets the Breed Standard Are you better off than what you already have Is the puppy light on bone Does he have both testiclesrdquo Shawn asked ldquoIf the bitch has not produced after two litters wersquore done and start all overrdquo

Some males donrsquot drop both testicles until later like during the eight-week vet visit so stop worrying and messing with a puppyrsquos testicles that havenrsquot dropped she said

ldquoI watch (the puppies) as they growrdquo Shawn said ldquoI have a laid-back approach to evaluating puppiesrdquo

Celie Cassadyrsquos Point of View

Celie Cassady (Staffordrsquos Kennels) has been a breeder for almost 20 years She only has one or two litters a year usually just one She has received the AKC Breeder of Merit and is a member of PWCCP and Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of Ameri-ca She takes pride in adhering to the Code of Ethics and does the required testing

Celie said to always look at temperament When their eyes open watch to see who is the most adventurous and who is shy

Using the Standard she looks at structure the turn of stifle etc when the puppies are eight weeks old If the structure is correct they should have a good topline

She looks for good expression They should be people oriented When their eyes and ears open she talks to them a lot After they have their shots she gets them around people TV radio vacuum cleaner and other house noises help them gain self-confidence when they get bigger

Look at their eye color and check bites she said The Standard states they should have a scissors bite Oval eyes should be brown ldquoin harmony with coat colorrdquo according to the illustrated standard

In a litter there will always be one that catches your heart early on when their personalities begin to come out Celiersquos Heart Dog came from her first corgirsquos second litter There were six puppies in that litter but one boy tugged at her heart He was big weighing 16 ounces at birth A friend said he looked like he needed a leather jacket so Celie named him Harley Easy Rider

Several times foreign judges at specialties and National have said that we have the nicest Corgis in the world Our reputa-ble breeders should be thanked for their careful breeding decisions

Remembering Michaele Gilpatrick

Michaele joined the PWCCP in 1990 We would encounter one another at the clubrsquos different events where a friendship soon devel-oped I (Leon) remember that when I first met Michaele and had a brief conversation I knew that she was a lady who spoke her mind and would stick by her words She definitely had plenty of grit and could get the action moving at various club meetings Michaele served as Sunshine Coordinator for many years A personal experience I (Leon) had with the manner in which she could deliver sunshine was in 2008 when I was recovering from lung surgery On behalf of the PWCCP Michaele had sent a beautiful flower arrange-ment accompanied by a card that I still have to this day The sen-timent made me emotional and showed the sincerity of her good wishes Penny and Leon remember going to Michaelersquos home to see newly born Corgis and a very large Newfie pup Before being allowed into the house we were instructed to step into a rectangle pan that contained a bleachndashlike substance Needless to say that was a first for us but illustrates how devoted she was to her dogs She wanted to protect the young pups from germs being brought into the home

Michaele was always ready to offer a lending hand for any task She worked with me (Penny) on many occa-sions setting up raffle and silent auction tables at the herding events Michaele also served as the first annual awards coordinator and was instrumental in introducing a Living Legend award to honor the older Corgis It was just a couple of months ago that she and I were remembering the lsquogood old daysrsquo and reflecting on how the club has grown She was proud to be a Lifetime Member Even though she knew attending another club event was probably not in her future she had said with a little laugh ldquoSomeone has to be up there watching over the club and it will probably be merdquo

We shall miss Michaele her laugh and her distinctive voice We are thankful that our paths crossed in the dog world and led to a lasting friendship Farewell good friend Until we meet again Leon Bezdikian and Penny Ford-Bezdikian

Remembering Michaele Gilpatrick Continued

Michaele was my sponsor when I joined PWCCP Our friendship became more than about the Corgis We remained close friends visiting in each otherrsquos homes over the years Sharing good times with family Her grandchildrenrsquos accomplishments were her most cherished moments and I loved hearing about them Sharing sad times and concerns became mine also Dogs were a passion be they Corgis Newfies or Col-lies Being a teacher meant sharing her knowledge which she did unselfishly I never bathe a dog that I donrsquot remember her teaching me how and showing me why getting them dry was necessary Michaele was met at Rainbow Bridge by her beloved corgis including the last Purple Thyra Harris

I met Michaele when she entrusted me with my first corgi Katie (Appelbos Glass Slipper) I re-member her being a strong soul that loved her corgis When Katie passed away I remember her writing me a note and she said in time the tears will be replaced by pawprints of memories across your heart I never forgot that or the recommen-dation she gave to Carol and George for me to get my current corgi Lewie Michaele will be missed but never forgotten It was a pleasure to know you Michaele you will live in our hearts forever Ann Marie Devoles

In years gone by we remember Michaele most vividly at dog shows and at the Match at our house She was the perfect person in our club to have the job of ldquoSunshinerdquo She always had something funny to say and could see the ldquoup-siderdquo of situations She somehow was always able to turn the rock over and conjure up the funny side

During our early years of knowing Michaele we were impressed with how well she was able to bring her two daughters into sharing her dog pas-sion

We miss her personality and the brightness she brought to club matters God speed Michaele Ann and Warren Phillips

AKC Offers Title Opportunities During Social Distancing

During this time of necessary social distancing the AKC is offering opportunities for dog owners to earn titles virtually

In early April the AKC announced that dog owners may teach their dogs tricks at home and then submit a video to an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) evaluator for review and approval The video program applies to all five levels of the Trick Dog Program--Novice Intermediate Advanced Performer and Elite Performer

The owner videos the dog at home and sends the video to the evaluator (Fee arrangements are between the evaluator and the dog owner) Once the evaluator reviews and approves the video the evaluator sends a copy of the Video Verification form to the dog owner and to AKC at trickdogakcorg The owner then sends a copy of the Video Verification form the Trick Dog Title Application and the Tricks Checklist to the AKC

At the end of April the AKC launched the Rally Novice Virtual pilot program giving beginner exhibi-tors an opportunity to stay at home and enter an AKC Rally event The program is designed to have a competitor set up a pre-designed AKC Rally course in his or her own yard record the performance and submit it to the AKC In turn the AKC will assign a pre-selected AKC Rally judge to virtually review and score the teamrsquos performance All qualifying scores will be recorded on the dogrsquos AKC record and applied toward the Rally Novice (RN) title The AKC will notify exhibitors by email of the results of their submission

The pilot program will extend through December 31 2020 All video submissions must be received by midnight of that date

In June AKC started a pilot virtual Agility Course Test (ACT1) The ACT 1 (and also ACT2 which is not offered virtually) is pre-Novice Agility test that earns a title Like Rally exhibitors submit video to AKC via YouTube and are scored by Agility judges Only two qualifying scores are needed to receive the title and participants have four courses to chose from Also like Rally this program will extend until the end of 2020

Rescue UpdateHere is a picture Dr Kim took of Schnitzel after his annual dental cleaning Dr Lupkin from the Animal Dental Center gave Schnitzel a crown and a root canal two years ago Un-fortunately Schnitzel is sneaky and likes to collect acorns during walks which resulted in a cracked tooth Schnitzel was rehomed to our family several years ago by the Clubrsquos res-cue team He is much loved

Nancy Bie lives in Carlisle PA She is retired She has two dogs both Pembroke Welsh Corgis Nancy is retired from Carlisle Barracks She grew up in Carlisle and has a daughter and four stepchildren She is a yoga teacher and currently teaches yoga at Goldrsquos Gym and two yoga studios She enjoys her dogs and has ongoing training at Joan Dandyrsquos Dog Training She has competed with one of her corgis in conformation agility rally and is currently training in scent work Her other corgi is being tested for her CGC and then will go on to be an agility or rally dog Her hobbies other than her dogs are reading and gardening Nancy belongs to the Carlisle Garden Club

Applicantsrsquo endorser Deb Wimer has been to the Applicantrsquos home on October 9 2019 She has known and been best friends with Nancy for 46 years Nancyrsquos love for her dogs and cats is long standing Deb gave Nancy her first corgi nine years ago from Debrsquos first litter Nancy always helped Deb with the puppies Nancy and Deb attended handling classes and other training classes together over the years Nancy has been a willing worker at our club herding and agility trials for years She has shown in conformation rally agility scent work and others Nancy is a kind and compassionate person and a willing worker She is very organized

The Applicantrsquos second endorser Pat Koons knows Nancy through Deb Wimer Nancy entered our herding weekends and helped with our events She also helped me with the club table at the specialty Nancy has helped with any event that she has attended

Siu Poon and James Caddell live in Germantown MD Siu has been a licensed insurance agent for over 35 years James has been a retail hobby store manager for over 20 years Siu enjoys reading doing puzzles cooking and spending time with their corgi Rosie James enjoys reading movies building wood projects and also spending time with Rosie They both have attended a Rescue Picnic and a Fun Fair event They have one corgi which they got from the PWCCP Rescue Siu belongs to the Metropolitan Washington Association of Independent Insurance Agents Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters Fountain Hills Community Association Ar-chitectural Review Committee and the Fountain Hills Community Association Social Committee They both want to get involved with the PWCCP who gave them the opportunity to adopt Rosie in 2018 They want to assist in various functionsactivities and possibly bring in some of their knowledgeexpertise in the insurance field and hobby industry

Sui and Jamesrsquo endorser Stephon Collins met Siu and James as Stephon was property manager for their homeowners association Siu was VP of the Board of Directors and James served on the Architectural Committee It was through this association that Stephon learned that Sui had had two corgis in the past He feels that the couple have been lovers of the breed for more than 20 years They would like to become more involved in Rescue and corgi club activities He feels they would be excellent ambassadors of the breed Stephon feels that both Siu and James are very open and honest people They open their hearts and home to those in needs Both are true animal lovers Stephon feels that the couple will bring new ideas to the club He visited their home on September 21 2019

Pat Koons Siu and Jamesrsquo second endorser met the couple through rescue Pat feels that the pair will help us with Rescue She feels that Siu is quite the go-getter and will help in any way she can as will James Pat says the couple are caring and concerned pet owners They are outgoing and easy to talk to and will be an asset to the club

Mark James and Buddy Johnson live in Alexandria VA Mark is an accountant and works for The Library of Congress in its copyright office Buddy is a DBA Director and works for Unison Compusearch Software Systems They both have attended the Rescue Picnic in 2018 and 2019 They have one corgi Auggie that they obtained from PWCCP Rescue They are interested in Pembroke Welsh Corgis and being with others who share the same interest They have owned six different Pembrokes since 1992 and they share their experience in owning the six Pems with different behaviors Mark enjoys the challenge of ldquocrunching numbersrdquo Mark loves cooking and traveling to new places He most recently travelled to the Tuscany area of Italy Buddy is a data base administrator by profession and he has written a genealogy book about his great auntrsquos travels called ldquoOn the Eve of Warrdquo He is currently working on another genealogy book when he isnrsquot busy entertaining Auggie

Mark and Buddyrsquos first endorser is Kathy Kelly She and Stephon met Buddy and Mark when they applied to adopt a corgi from the PWCCP Rescue Program She says the couple has a large single family home with a fenced in front and back yard Buddy and Mark believe in training socializing and employ a dog walker Kathy and Stephon did a home visit and found the couple to focus their home time on their dog and she says they are great people They are friendly hardworking and caring

Mark and Buddyrsquos second endorser is Pat Koons She met them through Rescue She feels that the couple want to help with Res-cue She feels they would be excellent foster folks and can help with transportation and will do home visits They both helped with the Rescue Picnic Their references couldnrsquot say enough good about them They are honest concerned and she feels that Rescue couldnrsquot find a better home for a dog

OLDEST LIVING CORGI FOR 2019Awarded to CH Sunline Iris Caddis (Noel) whelped December 12 2004

Noel came into our lives on December 12 2004 Being breeders we were constantly on the lookout for the special corgi in each litter and Noel was our selection along with her litter sister The two girls grew up together and when it was time to hit the show ring Noel and Kiso were a dynamic duo

Noel was about the hardest corgi we have ever had to train She had a strong corgi mind of her own and a deep conviction that she was the boss of our entire kennel We were captivated by her personality though She was the perfect Corgi She taught us so much about ourselves and about training a corgi She taught us about fierce love and loyalty and kindness and as she aged she became a benevolent leader With a small raise of the lip the young ones fell into line and did precisely as she expected She brought peace and order to the pack As you may have guessed after she accomplished her championship and had one litter of puppies she made it crystal clear that she was in her forever home on our farm We often have found her in the middle of a pile of soft cozy blankets wrapped around our grandchildren as all three of them enjoyed an afternoonrsquos movie together

We made a place for her in our bed and in our hearts and she allowed us to love her for fifteen years and two and three-quarter months She gave her life all she had and gave us a gift beyond imaging God Speed dear Noel You are the Champion of Our Hearts Get them all organized up there before we arrive

ADVERTISING IN THE TIDE

Advertising in The Tide is limited to PWCCP members and PWCCA-affiliate club members Advertising rates for non-PWCCP members (unless invited to advertise because of a PWCCP specialty or match win) and com-mercial businesses are double the PWCCP member rates and are subject to approval by the editor Advertis-ing on the front cover or on page two is available by invitation from the editor

Please review the following guidelines so that all the information that you wish to include is provided to us This will prevent us from having to request additional information and will help to avoid confu-sion by having everything submitted at the same time

Any or all of the following items may be submitted Registered and call name of the dog Sire and dam It is generally a good idea to include the sire and dam for conformation Corgis Sire and

dam may be included for performance dogs Rescue Corgis in performance under the AKC PALS program would not have a breed history so would not have this included

What was achieved What accomplishment(s) are you advertising Where was it achieved (location and show) Under which judge On what date Breeder (may be acknowledged formally or with such phrases as heartfelt thanks etc) Handler (including ownerhandler and in the case of a handler not the owner may include thank yous) Owner (in the case of a particularly crowded ad where the ownerhandler is pictured this can be noted in

the picture) Photos You must supply the name of the photographer or studio even if you took the pictures yourself It

is the policy of The Tide to give attribution on all photos Attribution is a legal requirement for professional photos If there are special circumstances where the photographer is not known please discuss with the Advertising Editor or with the Editor

People in the photos Judge and professional handler may be identified out of courtesy and as helpful infor-mation Ownerhandler is optional if ad is submitted by the ownerhandler

Kennel logos are a good idea and may be included Phone numbers addresses and email of breeders can be included by the breeder or with permission of the

breeder if they are the advertiser a member or if they co-own the dog with the advertiser Publication of non-club membersrsquo names addresses and phone numbers may be listed in the Tide for those who co-own dogs with the advertiser

Finally include any special text or explanations (Please note that space is limited and a long text will re-sult in much smaller pictures etc)

A 10 discount for four ads or business card ads in a year Full payment for four ads must be made at the time of the first ad The front cover is not included in discount ads
