On 1 August, 2013, Dr. Michael Gilbert assumed responsibility for Process Education (PEM) in the United States. Dr. Gilbert retired from his position as Chair of the Education Leadership Department at Central Michi- gan University in June 2013 and almost immediately formed his own com- pany, ATOIRE, to train Process Communication. Michael has been train- ing PEM and PCM seminars for more than 25 years and has been the driv- ing force for most of the doctoral dissertations that have been done. He also has published several papers based on his own independent re- search. For those of you who do not know Michael, he is a great guy, an outstanding educator, and will do a terrific job advancing the Process Edu- cation Model. His contact information is: Voice: 989 400-7069; Email: [email protected]. Joe and Judy think Michael is the perfect choice to succeed them. Joe and Judy will continue to train both PEM and PCM seminars, but given Joe’s advanced age (82), it may be on a reduced schedule. They also will continue as the editors of the Journal of Process Communication for the next year. The 2013 International Process Education Conference in Malibu, California, continued

Jeff King was the M.C. throughout the conference. He got the ball rolling with great humor and created an environment in which everyone was comfortable and eager to contribute to the success of the conference. Susie and Rebecca then explained the history of MUSE and explained that everyone on the MUSE campus has been trained in the concepts of PCM and de-scribed how they use the concepts to reach and teach every student.

Taibi then gave the opening keynote and set the tone for the conference. As always, he was terrific. He used events in his life to explain the concepts of “Phase, Issues, Phasing and Developmental Stages”. This was one of the highlights of the conference and gave everyone a better understanding of phase and phasing, and of Taibi himself.

Terry McGuire was the keynote speaker on day 2. He gave a very powerful presentation explaining how he used the concepts at NASA as the Lead Psychiatrist for Manned Space Flight For the Early Four Decades. He was an informal advisor to the spouses of the astronauts, was a sounding board for the astro-nauts to help them deal with various pressure situations, and was a counselor for space craft commanders, predicting which mem-bers of the crew might prove difficult during a mission and provid-ing guidance of how to deal with them.

In addition to the above presentations, there were 12 concur-rent sessions. Michael Gilbert presented on “Matching Teach-ing Styles with Learner Needs”. Ryan Donlan presented twice – once on “De-Escalation and Problem Solving for Those with Full Plates” and “PCM: A Catalyst to School Improvement”. Okie Wolfe presented on “Unique Techniques Using PEM in Teacher Education”. Dianne Bradley also presented twice – once on “Using PEM in Closing the Academic Achievement Gap” and was a moderator with Sally Lloyd on “Helping Teach-ers Meet the Needs of Their Imaginer Students”. Those pre-

sent at Sally’s session commented on how useful it was to help them understand Imaginers.

The 2013 International Process Education Conference in Malibu, California, continued.

In other presentations, Jane Holmberg and Jennifer Nelson presented on “Meeting the District’s Mission with PCM” explaining how their school district in Minnesota applied the concepts of PEM to improve the academic achievement of all their students. Jamie Remsberg from the staff of Next Element presented on “Learning How To Dance, the Art of Co-leading”. Aria Johnston, a Base Re-bel in a Promoter phase, described her experience in regular schools and compared it with what her teachers did in a private school to reach her. Jason Leal presented on “Maximizing Teach-able Moments”. In the other presentations, Joe and Judy Pauley presented case histories from a high school in Watts and an alter-native school near San Diego. The highlight of Joe and Judy’s presentation was a movie about Process Communication made by the 7th grade students at a San Diego area alternative school.

In a surprise move, Michael Gilbert reviewed what Joe and Judy have done for PCM/PEM during the past 26 years and read a commendation for them. Taibi then presented them with the first PCM Lifetime Achievement Award. They were very pleasantly surprised. The award was listed on the pro-gram, but they had not seen it.

Lest anyone think that the conference was all work and no play, the conference opened with a reception the evening of July 26th and there was a great party the night of the 27th. A good time was had by all. Aria Johnston, the Base Rebel in a Promoter phase high school student who presented at the conference, may have had the best time of all. She went surfboarding at Malibu one day and met Martin Sheen anoth-er day. Not only did she meet him, but he gave her a hug and kissed her on her cheek. She texted the news to the entire world immediately afterward.

Dr. Ryan Donlan, a professor at Indi-ana State University, submitted a paper entitled “The Process Education Model (PEM): A Catalyst for School Improve-ment: Ryan explains how the concepts

Cyril Collignon submitted a paper entitled “The Assessing Matrix and Second Degree Distress Behaviors”. In the paper Cyril describes second-degree distress behaviors and shows the applicability of the Assessing Matrix developed by Dr. Taibi Kahler.

Dr. Terry McGuire submitted a pa-per entitled “PCM, Under Cover”. This is a paper Terry delivered at the 2013 International Process Education Con-ference in Malibu, California in July 2013. In the paper Terry explains how he learned about Process Communica-tion and describes how he used the concepts with the astronauts and with their spouses.
