applicationhastwomainpurposes:planningandcalibration.
Usingadvanced3Dtechnology,thePelco3DDesignToolallowsyoutomanageavirtualrepresentationofyour
reallifelocation,whetheritisaschool,airport,officebuildingorevenawholecity.Withthis3Dmap(also
referredtoasa3DWorldthroughoutthisdocumentation),youcanplanoutyoursecuritybeforethefirst
cameraisevenpurchased.Thistypeofplanningwillsaveyoutimeandmoney.

waystodothis.TosaveyourmodificationsonanexistingProject:

Youcanalsosaveopened3DWorldsasnewprojects.Thiscanbeusefulifyouwanttohavemultipleversions
ofaparticular3DWorldwithdifferentmodifications.Thisoptionwillalsoberequiredtosaveanimported
architecturalmodelasaproject.
1. SelectFile>Advanced>SaveProjectAs.
Adialogwillappearallowingyoutonametheprojectandsaveitinanylocation.Aswithotheroptions,itis
highlyrecommendedyousavetheprojectinthesameworkspaceasallotherprojects.

ExportingaProjectArchiveisafeatureusedforsharingaProjectwithotherusersorforcreatingabackup.
WhenyoucreateaProjectArchive,a.3darchivefilewillbecreated.Thisfilecanbesenttoanotherusertobe

Itis
possible
that
the
AutoCAD
file
you
will
be
importing
has
been
designed
with
an
incorrect
scale.
In
the
case
thatthishappens,adialogwillappeartonotifyyouthatascaleincompatibilityhasbeendetected,withan
optiontoconvertthescaleusingadifferentunitoflength.Theavailableunitsoflengththatwillbedisplayed
aredynamicallygeneratedaccordingtothescaleoftheAutoCADfile.Thisensuresthatonlytheclosest
availableunitoflengthconversionismadeavailablefromthedialog'sdropdownmenu.

ImportinganArchitecturalModelwithcomplexgeometryOccasionallyyoumayimportanAutoCADwhichhasgeometrythatistoocomplexforthePelco3DDesignTooltoproperlycalculateandrenderafloor.Ifthishappens,anotificationmessagewillappearandthefilewillbeimportedwiththefloorasaplanethatcoverstheentiremodel.

ConfigurationFilesforImportedArchitecturalModels
Everytimeanarchitecturalmodelhasbeenimported,thePelcoDesignToolwillautomaticallycreateaconfigurationfile(.cfg)inthesamefolderwheretheAutoCAD's(.dwg)fileislocated.Thisisdonesothatanyimportedlayersyouchosethefirsttimewillstillalreadybeimportedthenexttimeyouimportthefileagain.ThePelco3DCameraDesignToolwillalsocreateageometry(.dae)fileinthesamefolder.ThisfilecontainstheCOLLADAgeometryofthemodel.UsingthePelco3DCameraDesignToolTheLocator
OntheleftsideofthePelcoToolwindowisapanelcalledtheLocator.Itcontainsalistofallthedifferentelementscurrentlypresentinthe3DWorld(theWorldTree).Thisincludesbuildings,floors,andeventuallycameras,doors,placemarksandviewpoints.
Toviewthedifferentfloors,simplyclickonthemtobringuptheir3Dlayout.
Doubleclickingoneachiteminthelocatorwillhavetheviewpointfocusonthem.
Torenameanyobjectinthelocator,simplyrightclickonthemandselect"Rename"(orPressF2).

your3Dworldandacamerawillautomaticallybeplacedinthatspot.Noneedtoworryaboutgettingit
absolutelyrightinonetry,youcanalwaysadjustthecameraspositionafterwards.Onceacamerahas

The
Pelco
3D
Camera
Design
Tool
has
a
database
of
different
camera
and
lens
models.
In
order
to
assign
a
specificmodeltoacamera,followtheseinstructions:
1. Selectthecamerayouwishtomodify.
2. IntheSelectedObjectpanel,scrolldowntothecameraPresetentry.
3. ClickonthefieldtotherightofthecameraPresetfield.Thiswillgiveyoutheoptionofeither:
a. Selectacameramodelfromadropdownmenu;
b. Clickonthe...buttontobringuptheCameraandLensModelswindow.
4. Onceyouhaveselectedyourcameramodel,repeatthesamesteps,butnowselectthelensmodelyou
wouldliketouse.
Note:You
can
also
view
the
Camera

Lens
Models
by
selecting
Database
>Manage
Camera
Models.
FieldofView(FOV)
SelectthefovXfieldfromtheSelectedObjectpaneltobringupasliderthatwillallowyoutochangethe
horizontalfieldofviewofthecamera.Notethatyouarelimitedbythelenssmodelwhenitcomestoitsfield
ofviewpotential. ThefovXfieldreferstothehorizontalfieldofview,measuredinangulardegrees().

UnderstandingtheFrustum
Frustumisthetechnicaltermfortheconelikeprojectionacameradisplaysinthe3Dviewport.Itsmain
purposeistoshowyouwhatareathecameracoverswithitscurrentangleandFOV.
Whenyoumoveacamera,youwillnoticethatthefrustumfollowsalong,alwayshighlightingtheareavisibleto
thecamera.
You
can
confirm
this
by
comparing
the
area
covered
by
the
frustum
to
what
you
can
see
in
the
SelectedCameraViewpanel.
Anexampleofafrustumandhowithighlightswhatthecameracansee
CameraProjectionmodes
Bydefault,thePelco3DCameraDesignToolwillhaveCoverageProjectionmodeenabledtoshowyouwhere
camerasoverlapbyhighlightingoverlappingfrustumsinadifferentcolor.Thisallowsyoutoinstantlyseehow
muchcoverageyouaregettinginaspecificareaandhowwellmonitoredcertainareasare.Theywillalsohelp
youinidentifying(anddealingwith)blindspotsinyoursecuritysetup.

Viewpoints
(
)
are
a
special
kind
of
object
that
allows
the
user
to
specify
from
what
angle
and
distance
a
certainpointofinterestwillbeviewed.
Inordertoassignaviewpointtoanobject,thefollowingstepsmustbetaken:
1. Selecttheobjectyouwouldliketohaveaviewpointassignedto(forexample:acameraoradoor).
2. Navigatethe3Dviewportuntilyouarelookingattheobjectinawaywithwhichyouaresatisfied.
3. SelectView>CreateAssignedViewpointfromthemenu.(Keyboardshortcut:CTRL+Shift+D)
Thiswillcreateaviewpointthatislinkedwiththeobjectyouhaveselected.Thenewlycreated
viewpointwillhavethenameXviewpointwhereXisthenameoftheobjecttowhichtheviewpoint
isassigned.
PreferredViewpoints
Anotherwaytoassignaviewpointtoanobjectisbyspecifyingitspreferredviewpoint.
1. Selecttheobjectyouwithtohaveaviewpointassignedto.
2. IntheSelectedObjectpanel,locatethepreferredViewpointfield.
3. SelectthepreferredViewpointfield.Thiswillbringupadropdownmenuthatyoucanusetochoosea
viewpointfromthelist.YoucanalsoclickontheXbuttontounassignaviewpointfromtheselected
object.

1. Movethe3Dviewtothepositionyouwant.

HereisadescriptionofhowviewpointsreactinthePelco3DDesignToolandCentralCommand.
1. Clickingonaviewpointwillmoveto3Dviewtoitspositionandorientation.
2. Ifanobjecthasanassignedviewpoint,doubleclicktheobjecttomovethe3Dviewtothatviewpoint.
PlacemarkManagement
Therearefivetypesofplacemarkobjectsthatcanbeaddedintothe3DWorld(Doors,PoliceOfficers,Cars,
Suspects,andGenericPlacemarks).Theseobjectscanbeusedforvariousbeneficialpurposessuchasreference
points,annotations,andsimulationsfortestingacamera'sresolution.
AddingaPlacemark
object
1. Clickonanyofthefiveplacemarkiconslocatedabovethe3DviewpaneltoenablePointandClick
PlacementMode.Onceenabled,simplyclickonanysurfaceinthe3DWorldtoaddthePlacemark.
Afteraddingaplacemark,themovementnavigationmodewillautomaticallyreturntoMouse
Navigation.
Advancedfeature: Aswithcameraplacement,pressingandholdingdowntheLeftShiftkeywhilein
PointandClickPlacement Modewillallowyoutoplacemultipleplacemarkswithoutreturningto
MouseNavigation.AfterreleasingLeftShift,addingonemoreplacemarkwillswitchthemovement
navigationmode
to
Mouse
Navigation.
2. Onceplaced,youcanmovetheplacemarkby:
a. Clickanddraggingwiththeleftmousebuttontomovetheplacemarkhorizontally.
b. Clickanddraggingwiththemiddlemousebuttontomovetheplacemarkvertically.
c. Clickanddraggingwiththerightmousebuttontorotatetheplacemark.
3. Placemarksdonothaveanyspecificrequirementsinorderforthemtowork.However,youshould
considergivingthemauniquename,anannotationandalsoapreferredviewpoint.

Annotations
Anannotationisadescriptivetextthatcanbeaddedtoanyobject.ThistextwillbevisibleinCentralCommand
bymeansofasmallpanelonthelowerleftsidethatwillappearonceyouclickontheobjectinquestion.
1. Selecttheobject(camera,door,viewpointorplacemark)thatyouwishtoaddanannotationto.
2. Intheselectedobjectpanel,locatetheannotationTextfieldandselectit.Asmallbuttonwillappear
promptingyoutoedittheannotation.
3. ClickontheEditAnnotationbuttontoopenthetexteditor.
4. Whenyouarefinishedwritingyourannotation,simplyclosethetexteditor.Yourtextwillbesaved

Importing3Dgeometryintoaworld

ArchitecturalModel(DWG)ImportTips
ThissectionwillhelpprovidetipstoimprovetheImportArchitecturalModelfeatureandgiveguidelineson
howanAutoCADshouldbedesignedforbestresultswiththePelco3DCameraDesignTool.
Layers
Ifthe.dwgfileisnotimportingcorrectly,onetroubleshootingtechniqueistoremovealllayersfromthe.dwg
file(inAutoCAD,forexample),whichdonotcontainwalls,doors,orwindows. Providingthelayerswithclear,
distinctnamesforeachimportantlayerwillsimplifytheselectionoflayersintheimportdialogue.Youshould
alsomakesurethattheAutoCADfileincludesWalls,DoorsandWindowsasseparatelayers.Thereasonfor
thisis,forexample,ifyouhaveyourDoorsandWallsincludedinthesamelayer,youwillhavetoimportthe
wholelayerasa"Wall".Thiswillimportthearcsthatrepresentdoorsasawallaswell.

Doors
As stated above, doors should be designed as a completely separate layer from walls, windows etc.
Inadditiontothis,doorswillonlyimportcorrectlywhentheyarerepresentedasarectangularpolylinewithan
arcorellipse.Whiledoorsmayimportwithjustarectangle,thisisnotrecommendedastheresultsmayvary.

Floors
OneofthelimitationsofimportinganarchitecturalmodelisthatthePelco3DCameradesigntoolcancompute
onlyonecontiguousfloorsurfaceatatime.Thelargestfloorsurfacewillbeprioritized,butanyothersmaller
detachedroomsinthemodelwillbeimportedwithoutafloor.
ThisexampleshowsthelargestpartofthebuildingwiththefloorcalculatedinBlue.The2smallerdetached
roomshighlightedinredwillnotbecalculatedaspartofthefloor.
Sometimesthecomputationoftheconcavefloorwillfail.Whenthishappens,youmayseeissuessuchasa
completelymissingfloor,ormissingsections(Holesormissingtriangularsectionsinthefloor).
Thereareafewoptionsyoucantakewhichmaypotentiallyhelpimportyourarchitecturalmodelwitha
completeand
accurate
floor:
1. Tryimportingmorelayers(ifapplicable).SometimesthePelco3DDesignToolrequiresmoredatato
algorithmicallycalculatethefloor.
2. Tryimportingfewerlayersiftherearetoomany.Iftherearemanyobjectsincloseproximity,itmaybe
toodifficulttocorrectlycalculatethefloor.
3. Ifnofloorshowsup,oriftheabove2optionsfail,usethe"BoundingFloor"option.
