Guide to the restaurants of Peking, November 1977, by British diplomat Roger Garside. Written just over a year after the death of Mao and the arrest of the Gang of Four. This is a guide to the more prestigious restaurants which were used to catering to foreigners and includes places offering dog (”not obligatory”), sheep’s eyes and chicken with “caterpillars”. In those days most restaurants closed around 6-7 pm unless you had booked at one of these elite eating places which were much more expensive than “masses’” restaurants.
