Happy St. Pat's Day!Sometimes I wonder about owners who impart human characteristics onto their dogs but I gotta concede this picture's a hoot.

New Subscription OptionI received several questions about the planned lower cost subscription option mentioned in my last column. We are still working on it but don't want to unveil it until we've posted enough content on for subscribers to get started. It shouldn't be much long now and we'll notify all F&F friends when it is available. As indicated in the last issue, the new option will be much more affordable while giving subscribers access to the same content we publish in the magazine. And YES... the ratings will be included as well! We sincerely feel that most will like it because it will be easier to navigate and read, especially on smartphones!

RatingsI am delighted to bring the fancy our first report in this issue. This year we are starting with the Open A Ratings which you'll find later in this issue.

For those who don't realize, quite a bit of work goes into the publication of our rating system

Page 5: Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO … Issues... · Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO RN TD ACT1 Tops All Open A Contenders ...

data. A few individuals who work behind the scenes to make our reports possible don't get the recognition they deserve. Their efforts are deeply appreciated!

Rob Garrett works for the AKC's technology department and has been our go to guy to provide the raw data we need to tabulate the rating results. Rob has always been extremely prompt and responsive in meeting our requests for this information. Many years ago volunteers maintained these records manually and it required untold hours of work to tabulate the findings. Later we hired secretaries to manually enter the data into a computer system to tabulate the results. Rob's efforts in providing this material has saved us much of the manual work that was so time consuming and error prone. Rob recognizes how important this information is to the fancy and he has always been highly attentive in providing accurate data for us to tabulate. Thank you Rob!

Dave Pluth is another marvel supporting our rating reports. Dave provides the tabulated results out of the goodness of his heart. I envy his adept skills in designing the data system that calculates and sorts the data for us to publish. With Dave's "techie talents" I'd expect him to be kind of a geeky character. Working with him the past two years had made me realize what a kind hearted "normal" fellow he is. Always responsive to help and enjoyable to communicate with, we owe Dave a heartfelt "Thank You"!

Nancy Speed will probably kill me for including her here but she's a deserving lady entitled to recognition! The data we receive doesn't provide complete owner or contact information so it can be difficult to know exactly who the handlers are, or how to get ahold of them. Nancy has led the pack in extending a helping hand anytime we've asked for help. In genuine kindness to support the sport, and with concern helping handlers receive the recognition they deserve, I know Nancy has spent considerable time hunting these individuals down. I suspect she has FBI connections somewhere because she has yet to fail! Asking nothing in return Nancy does this to help all of us. What a gem!

By the way... Nancy & I have had a hoot watching April's coming delivery. If you have no clue who April is and want to see a tall lady giving birth to a 6' 150 lb. baby, check this out! --> https://frontandfinish.com/griaffecam

What Does It Mean to Have Fun?I am passionate about dogs. I have dogs because I love dogs. I would have dogs if I never competed again. The fact that I can share my home with a different species, that we coexist peacefully, harmoniously, and, yes, have great fun together fascinates me.

I was waiting between classes at the AKC Obedience Classic in Orlando when an AKC employee asked me how I was doing.  “I’ve done better,” I replied, and her next comment startled me, “But you’re having fun, right?”

How Do You Define Fun?

Why is it that we take up this challenge? Why is it that we go in the ring, week after week, willing to test our abilities, as a trainer, handler, and canine coach? Is it just to have fun?

Let’s be honest, we are probably not thinking about “fun” as we walk out of the ring having made a mistake that cost us a qualifying score, or resulted in a major deduction. Qualifying is more fun than not qualifying. Winning a blue ribbon is more fun than taking home the red, yellow, or white one and way more fun than going home empty handed. But does this mean we are not having fun? I guess it depends on how you define it.

Dogs Are Problem Solvers

Fun is defined as “enjoyment, amusement, and lighthearted pleasure.” What is missing from this definition, as it applies to the sport of dog obedience, is the pleasure derived from the challenge and commitment required to train an obedience dog. This definition does not mention the satisfaction derived from having learned something new, achieved a goal, improved our skills, or enhanced our understanding about a problem we’ve been having.

Are You Passionate About Training?

Enjoyment, amusement, and light-hearted pleasure do not explain why I participate in obedience, and I’m betting it doesn’t describe why you participate either. Instead, I would choose the word passion. I am passionate about training and am in awe of what dogs allow me to teach them. I’m truly amazed by the bond that develops and the communication that takes place.

I am also passionate about the camaraderie that dog training friends develop. Being a dog trainer has provided me with friends from every walk of life and in every area of the country. There is rarely an event when I don’t make a new friend or run into an old friend I haven’t seen in a while. These friends complement each other on a good performance and offer support when someone is disappointed. When someone in the obedience community is in need, they rally together to lend a hand.

So, in response to the question, “But you’re having fun, right?” My first response is, “Do you really think I’d be doing this if I weren’t having fun?”

I am concerned that all the admonitions to “have fun” miss the all the other important reasons that we compete in the sport of dog obedience.

As I sit ringside, passionate about what I’m doing, and preoccupied with better ways to do it, I may not appear to be having “fun” but, I would like to go on record as saying that having a passion, embracing a challenge and an unchecked desire to improve, is far greater than simply having fun.

Writing this, I am reminded of a plaque that my parents had on the wall of their kitchen. Both coaches, teachers, and competitors, they believed:

To win the game is great,To play the game is greater,To love the game is greatest.

When I started training Chaser in 1995, I was in the height of my self-imposed pure positive era. I was working hard to replace forceful flinging of dogs into position with the use of luring and rewarding to teach them to want to do things. It was a fun time, with a lot of experimenting with different dogs in classes, and some resounding successes with unlikely dogs. However, we all eventually ran into the reliability wall. There had to be some way to motivate our dogs to rise above distractions and temptations and stay on task. What I discovered was that these dogs were conditioned to be attentive and wondering what we wanted, so the amount of physical compulsion needed to guide them back to the path of right behavior was actually minimum. Collar pressure became my go-to means of adding guidance and sensation that was just enough for each dog to prefer to avoid, but not enough to make them feel fear or be too overwhelmed by my emotions to take in the information I was trying to convey.

These days when I run into a team struggling with a persistent problem, one piece of advice I give often is to think about focusing on the DOG rather than an exercise, and to adjust the tone of the communication. Let me give you a couple of examples.

Many trainers with experience try much too hard to avoid ANY errors in their training. The retrieve is the most common place for errors. And the one that can set you back pretty hard is being too intense about not allowing the dumbbell to hit the ground once it’s in the dog’s mouth. Regardless of how people choose to teach the take and the hold, I see handlers with

green dogs stepping toward their dogs to close the last two-step gap on a retrieve, or bending down over small dogs quickly and actually snatching the dumbbell away to prevent the dog from dropping it. The results are dogs who stop short on retrieves, and dogs who sit and won’t look up at their handlers as they brace themselves for the snatching hands. Some dogs start avoiding the dumbbell because the snatching away makes them wonder if maybe the owners didn’t want the dogs to have it after all. Some dogs start spitting the dumbbell out since that appears to be what the owners want. It’s a tangled web of misinterpretations on both ends of the leash.

So what would I do instead? First, I would stop worrying about the dumbbell hitting the ground in early stages. Hold is its own element. Holding while going from a stand to a sit is also a separate element. Coming in close enough with the dumbbell is a must, so I’m going to protect that first and foremost. With a dog that I’m using either a play retrieve or a shaped retrieve dynamic with, I’m more interested in the dog getting to me and the dumbbell landing in my hand. So I welcome the dog in. I move my hands AWAY from the dog to offer a place for the dumbbell to land without asking for a front at all. My hands move calmly and smoothly and remain open and on the dog’s level. If the dog drops the dumbbell, I encourage her to pick it up again, and offer the landing place. But I do NOT grab for the dumbbell.

When we’re a bit farther along in our training, and I’ve addressed the hold (which includes no mouthing) and want to put it into the topography of the retrieve to include the sit and deliver, I work it on a leash. I will have taught the dog than she can turn off collar pressure by taking the dumbbell from my hand. Now if she comes in and drops the dumbbell, I apply just enough pressure for the dog to notice. Due to the use of collar pressure as a “Pay attention and do the next thing I tell you to do” cue for other behaviors, what I get is curiosity and minor annoyance rather than fear. I calmly pick up the dumbbell and give it to her, and then release the collar pressure when the dumbbell is in her mouth. Then we try a one step front again, and if she holds on, I praise WHILE THE DUMBBELL IS STILL IN HER MOUTH. Then I take it, and have her do a few other behaviors before rewarding her obedience, but NOT rewarding the act of spitting the dumbbell out directly. I allow the dog to make the choice to hold and deliver, or to drop the dumbbell and experience the penalty and learn that keeping the dumbbell in her mouth prevents the penalty. No drama, no startling moves, no anger. Just instruction, information and result comparisons. Most of all, no motions from the trainer that actually cause the undesired behaviors!

Even something as seemingly simple as eye contact can turn out to be complicated mentally. Over the years, I’ve run into a few dogs who just didn’t get blessed with a high

! ! ! http://frontandfinish.comPage 11Front & Finish®

degree of social bravery. They weren’t necessarily outright fearful dogs about the normal things in the environment, and they mostly got along fine with dogs and people; but they really were overly deferential to their owners. Anything they learned well and were familiar with, they were reliable and consistent on; but they overtly resisted changes to what they knew because they were afraid to make errors. And…they often avoided strong eye contact with their trainers.

Many folks like their dogs to look right up into their eyes during heeling. It works okay for taller dogs, and when you see a successful connection like that, it looks wonderful. But for the more deferential dogs, that sort of bold eye contact seems pushy and inadvisable. Some will literally lower their heads and look sideways toward the owners’ knees or hip. Some extreme cases will glaze completely. Some of them are actually capable of doing glorious functional heeling with that safer focal point; but their trainers read that altered head position as inattention and lack of focus, and that often leads to some pretty strong corrections. Those corrections would work on a bolder dog who simply zoned out for a few seconds to try to sniff something on the ground; but for the deferential dog whose cautious respectful posture is now being punished, in spite of the fact that the dogs are in heel position and are hitting turns and halts correctly, it’s a disaster. Now the dog REALLY wants to avoid making challenging eye contact, and the body language of the owner, the tone of voice and the force on the collar all projects anger without showing the dog what to do instead.

The solution for this sort of dog might be a more neutral heeling target. Could be a hand target, or an armband, but something that brings the head up just a bit, but does not require that eye-to-eye laser gaze. More importantly this is the sort of dog who should be treated calmly, with skills broken down as small as possible and trained patiently to avoid what I call emotional static that gets in the way and overshadows the dog’s perception of information. It can be frustrating to train dogs who don’t make intuitive leaps; but the reward is that they tend to be quite reliable and consistent and trustworthy once they know for sure what is wanted.

That heeling scenario is an example of a principle that I urge people to follow. When you are not getting what you want to see, take the time to see what you ARE getting, and try to figure out why the dog is giving that to you. If you can figure out how the dog is thinking, it can be a light-bulb moment that will help you alter your presentation so that things will make sense to your dog. That connection, that sort of insight and mutual understanding is the magic in our sport.

Inherent Factors In Dogs

Dogs have certain inherent drives that a trainer may use to help motivate and reward the dog. These drives include hunger, sex, and the pack instinct. The wild dog satisfies its hunger drive by chasing prey and bringing its quarry back to the den (retrieving). Today these chase retrieve drives are very strong in many individual dogs and can be used to aid their training.

Motivation can also be accomplished by punishment or correction. A dog can react by avoiding a correction to escape the adversity. However, if the correction is too severe the dog may likely fall into a state of helplessness.

A dog’s drives are affected by his environment so this plays a large part in training. If a dog is upset by environmental factors then training becomes much more difficult. Dogs learn best in a familiar environment since both fear and anger (uncontrolled responses), are triggered by a feeling of being threatened or by an unfamiliar environment. Dogs do not easily learn when emotionally upset, and a dog that is fearful cannot concentrate on the trainer’s desires.

Every dog exhibits these inherent drives and factors to differing degrees. The trainer must use and control each of these drives. Sometimes they work to a trainer’s benefit but also often to their detriment. Nerveless these intrinsic factors are present all of the time. Simply said, the dog’s temperament is the sum of its drives.

Dogs Self -Trained

By Robert T. [email protected]

Page 15: Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO … Issues... · Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO RN TD ACT1 Tops All Open A Contenders ...

The sex drive is often the cause of aggressive behavior, and while this cannot be used to the obedience trainer’s advantage, it must be controlled if the dog is to behave properly around other dogs.

Sometimes the hunger drive will motivate a dog when negative forms of inducement fail. If a problem occurs that is caused by too harsh or misapplied corrections, any further pressure will only intensify the problem. The food reward can often be used to alleviate problems such as these. Many dogs that cannot be compelled into a wanted action will respond eagerly for a food reward.

Many behavioral studies use food as a reward for a wanted response. However, many of these studies also do not use a carnivore as a subject, but instead use an animal that normally subsists on plant products. As a consequence, these laboratory animals have a need to eat several times a day and are more highly motivated by food than would be an animal (such as a dog), that tends to hunt, gorge itself, and then rest. As well, many laboratory studies begin by reducing the animal’s weight and food intake. Many handlers would consider this a questionable practice as a humane form of training.

Often times a trainer will use the chase instinct to teach the dog to come by playing the part of the prey. Dogs with a highly developed chase instinct are easily taught to come when called.

The retrieve instinct can be almost compulsive in some dogs and is used in many facets of training. Basic obedience training does not use the retrieve formally, but it can be used as a reward for a wanted response and to motivate a good attitude in the training sessions.

In the natural state the dog belongs to a highly structured social group. Each animal has his place in the hierarchy and is content and happy. The domestic dog belongs to a pack consisting largely of humans and readily assumes his position in this “pack.” (Taking for granted, that the dog’s temperament matches the personality and disposition of the owner.)

The wise trainer uses the pack instinct to his advantage. As the pack leader figure, the trainer commands the respect of the dog. The dog desires the praise of the leader, and praise becomes the trainer’s best motivational tool.

Dogs can learn to do something with absolutely no force applied; however, most practical training methodologies require the trainer to apply some type of correction. Physical corrections cause uncomfortable feelings. Because dogs differ in their level of discomfort (or threshold of pain), corrections must also differ in their level of magnitude. A very sensitive dog may experience discomfort when its collar tightens only slightly, while a headstrong dog (with a high threshold of pain), may experience only experience a similar level of discomfort when the

! ! ! http://frontandfinish.comPage 15Front & Finish®

Page 16: Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO … Issues... · Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO RN TD ACT1 Tops All Open A Contenders ...

collar is jerked. Some handlers choose to utilize a pinch training collar. When used properly, this device allows them to snatch the leash with less force to obtain an effective correction that matches the dog’s pain threshold.

Arguments as to which is the best training collar are irrelevant, since the collar to use depends upon each dog’s individual make-up. A light fabric collar may be all that is required for a sensitive individual, while a pinch training collar may be appropriate for others. There is no point in causing more discomfort than is necessary for any dog, but it is also cruel to use a collar that is ineffective. A collar that does not provide the desired response to a correction causes trainers to jerk harder. This only results in a tight leash and a choked dog. This situation is entirely incompatible with learning.

Collar-training corrections, if effective, cause the dog an appropriate level of unpleasantness. The dog quickly learns that to avoid this unpleasantness it must prevent the action that caused it. The trainer is making use of the dog’s natural instinct to avoid pain.

The avoidance of pain is a mechanism for self-preservation. It is coupled with the instinct to flee anything that appears to endanger the individual. A dog that has experienced too much distress in a situation will attempt to flee. A dog that cannot avoid or flee punishment will sooner or later exhibit helplessness. This is a state in which the dog has given up and accepts the pain as its fate.

A trainer’s attempt to teach a dog to start heeling from a sit position may be used to illustrate avoidance, flight, and helplessness. Here the trainer utters the command “heel”, pops forward on the leash, and praises the dog as he steps forward. The dog quickly learns that in order to avoid the unpleasantness of the leash correction it must start moving when it hears “heel” and the trainer begins to move. When the dog makes this movement, it avoids discomfort. The dog receives vocal encouragement whether it moves or not because the trainer doesn’t want the dog to associate the correction with him, only with not moving on command.

In most cases the dog will associate the discomfort of the correction with not moving and it will get up and move to avoid the pain. After several repetitions the dog moves on the handler’s command and it is considered to be trained.

It is possible for the trainer to jerk too hard causing severe pain to the dog, which is above its threshold. This ends with a dog that attempts to flee the pain. This frequently happens with very sensitive dogs. Since the dog is on leash, it cannot run away. The trainer should calm the dog and start again, with a more gentle correction that does not trigger this fleeing response.

! ! ! http://frontandfinish.comPage 16Front & Finish®

Page 17: Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO … Issues... · Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO RN TD ACT1 Tops All Open A Contenders ...

In rare cases a dog upon receiving a leash correction will lapse into helplessness. The dog lying down in a heap, refusing to move, and exhibiting a defeated expression in its eyes typically accompanies this. This dog has received corrections that were far too forceful for its temperament. As the problem was caused by overcorrection in the first place, more corrections will only push it further into this helpless state. When leash corrections (no matter how meek) are not working, trainer must search for another motivation that does not rely upon force. Typically these incentives are food, praise, tactile encouragement, or a combination of the three.

Unintentional Training

Unintentional training occurs whenever the trainer’s actions to obtain one response actually produce an unwanted one. This often happens when anthropomorphic trainers give the dog credit for moral or mental attributes that it does not possess. Unintentional training also results when the trainer’s actions are not associated with the act the dog is doing.

Trying to shame a dog into not repeating an act is to give the dog credit for the same moral standards as its human owner. Attempting to talk a dog out of shy or aggressive behavior often results in intensifying these actions. Giving a dog a command to do something and then not insisting the act be done is really teaching the dog to disobey.

Unintentional training frequently occurs in many obedience groups and methods of training. To go to a dog to correct it for not coming often causes the dog to associate the correction with the trainer and not the desired act. This results in poor or hesitant recalls, as the dog associates the trainer with being corrected. Grabbing at a dog that heels wide is another example of teaching the dog to avoid the trainer. Often time trainers attempting corrections this way only find they have intensified the dog’s behavior of heeling wide.

Next month we will begin an investigation into pre-training skills.

Recently my trainer, Merrillynn Hill, suggested I take Blaze to as many different locations as possible before her March 2ed show in Portland, Maine. This is good advice but considering how this month  is going (with one snow storm after another) it is next to impossible. I did manage to get Blaze to a local Petco last weekend where one customer pet her and one of the men who worked there got down on the floor and pet Blaze while giving her treats. She needs to have more people touch her, especially men, in preparation for an eventual Stand For Exam. We did have one workman in the house last week and before he left I asked him to please pet Blaze while giving her treats.

There are many exercises we work on inside while being house bound. Today we did some heeling and recalls in the hallway. While Glenn cooked Grilled Cheese sandwiches for lunch I put Blaze in both a sit - stay and a down - stay on leash where she could watch him and get the good smells from the stove. This was not only good practice for her but kept Blaze out from under his feet. In our breakfast nook we worked on fronts and finishes. Also "setting up" around a large cone, in preparation for setting up in the ring. A sit -stay with 3 pieces of food on the floor in front of Blaze is a good exercise which does not require much space. Also the Stand For Exam.  Some mornings when Blaze is on the grooming table we do a little "take it" work with the dumbbell.

Some things M. Hill specifically asked me to work on are # 1)  Desensitizing Blaze to having her collar touched. She comes into me at such a fast pace on the recalls, I need to grab the collar and slow her down to do the front, otherwise she will run by me. Blaze does not like her collar being grabbed, so we practice having cookies while I touch and hold her collar. This seems to be working.

2). The command "UP Here". I hold a treat in my left hand above Blaze's head and give the command "up here". This is to be used when her nose is to the ground and she is not paying attention to me while heeling.I can also use this command guiding Blaze between exercises and entering the ring gate. It will be very useful when doing Rally as I have guided all my Lhasas with my left hand when doing Rally with them. I just never had a specific command to use before. Blaze already looks up when I say "Up Here." This is an easy command to teach while sitting on the couch with your dog watching tv. We also practice it going through different doorways in the house.

3). When I praise Blaze for doing a good job, I need to do it more quietly. The more excited I sound, the  more excited she gets. A judge will not appreciate her barking her head off or jumping up and down in excitement.

Last week in class we worked on entering a ring gate. Heeling up one side (several gates set up in a row) and down the other. Then we did weaves in and out of the four gates. Then a  "fast" up  one side and a  "slow" down the other. We also did this variation in heeling around large cones. Learning to "set up"  around the first cone, heeling between two other cones at different paces, and circling another cone before finishing at the last one. We tried this off leash (successfully) a couple of times also.  M. Hill had us do sit and down stays with a ring gate behind the dogs. The handlers would walk behind the dogs on the other side of the ring gate. It is an excellent idea to get the dogs used to ring gates. Some dogs have a disadvantage of never seeing a ring gate before their first show.

In our private lesson the next day with Merrillynn we worked on setting up a course for Rally Novice. Blaze knows all  the exercises but she never saw a course laid out. She thought the signs were great for sniffing and tearing out of the holders. I would not want this to happen at her first show !  A couple of the exercises I am still not quite clear on, so I will have to watch a Rally Novice  demonstration of all the exercises on the computer. The Spiral can be very confusing and I need to concentrate on that one. M. Hill also said I was making my 360 degree circles left and right much smaller than necessary. I ordered the most up to date Rally Rule Book which needs to be studied !

A friend of mine recently surprised me by saying she is through with showing. Her exact words were "There is not enough reward for training my dog and earning titles". I thought working with your dog, thereby creating a strong bond, was reward in itself. I know Blaze enjoys training with me and I love to see her learn more with each training session.

Post-2016 presidential election doldrums set in on Buckeye’s Valley Farm in December. The weather turned miserable (freezing rain, ice and bone chilling cold). My foundation St. Croix ram, Mr. Buckeye, came down with pneumonia. Despite my round-the-clock efforts, Mr. Buckeye couldn’t recover from his pneumonia induced lung damage. I called in the farm vet and had him euthanized. I missed three obedience trials because I couldn’t get off the farm. Nevertheless, I continued to train Beardies Smokes (UDX work) and Vim (for her CD). I also continued to ruminate over my objectives for their training.

As a Koehler trainer, my focus on dog training has been to develop an obedient dog, not a dog that earns 200’s in the competition obedience ring. But as a nascent obedience junkie, I have been reading and listening to those-who-know about what it takes to get a 200 score: Style Points.

What are Style Points? I am not sure, but I know that I have been told repeatedly that Smokes, Mr. Mellow, does not have “style.” And “style,” from what I understand, means doing each exercise appropriately and with panache. If your dog can do that, he will accumulate the Style Points necessary for a really high score.

Style Points

In my quest to turn Mr. Mellow in to Mr. Panache, I sought guidance from those-who-know. One in-the- know told me that I am to be the “most important thing” to my dog when we enter the ring. So I taught my dog to play tug with a toy. I used the toy to amp Smokes up for training. I used the toy to amp Smokes up for his competition performances. I worked on details in a consistent and evolutionary manner (straight sits, straight fronts, quicker responses to commands). I raised the bar on performance one step per item, often several items at a time. Unfortunately, while being trained for Style Points, Smokes experienced collateral damage. He lost his “go outs.”

I had taught the “go out” as a blind retrieve (by hiding a small towel roll at the end of the “line”). Smokes could not go out straight. He always arched clockwise (except for very short go outs). Sometimes he arched so much that he ended up in the glove #1 corner. To get him to go straight, I sent Smokes on 70 foot blind retrieves along a fence line, strategically placing his left side next to the fence. I then put an elevated 70 foot line (rope) at a 12 degree angle from the fence and sent him on blind retrieves along the 12 degree line I moved this line out radially at 12 degree increments. (We have yet to make it to 90 degrees.)

For more “go out” practice, I set up two partial rings; one a standard size, the other 60 feet long with extra distance past the jumps. Smokes and I worked “go outs” as a blind retrieve ad nauseum. He looked pretty good at the farm. When the weather and sheep situation cleared, we finally went to dog school to proof our new and improved “go outs.” Smokes bombed. He pulled an el foldo about 10 feet away from me, dropping like a rock. I ear pinched him to the towel roll near the center stanchion and praised him immediately for picking it up.

Continually proofing and training, bi-weekly I took Smokes to WOOF, a training facility about 45 minutes from home. At the facility, Smokes would do an el foldo on his first “go out“ and then successfully perform the rest of his “go outs” after the first correction. In a few weeks, Smokes began to do the first “go out” on his own. Then the “unthinkable” happened. I sent Smokes on his first “go out.” One of the dogs crated near the center stanchion snarled and barked as Smokes approached the ring gating. That was it! Smokes’ “go out” rehabbing returned to ground zero. This occurred five days before our first trial of the year. Team Smokes soldiered on.

! ! ! http://frontandfinish.comPage 22Front & Finish®

Page 23: Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO … Issues... · Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO RN TD ACT1 Tops All Open A Contenders ...

Our first trial weekend was in a horse barn. The atmosphere was laid back and comfortable. During his “go outs,” Smokes got about halfway to the ring gates before he either got lost or laid down. But on one “go out,” he made it almost all the way to the gates. We trained for two more weeks. Then we went to a very “busy” show at WOOF: a Collie specialty with conformation, obedience and rally.

On Saturday, Smokes did well in Open. We were ready for Utility…and then I saw the exercise order. Directed jumping was the first exercise. Ugh! I sent Smokes on his “go out” and he dropped at my feet as if I had shot him: BANG! He wouldn’t get up. He wouldn’t come when called. I asked the judge if we could be excused. I got my leash and fastened it to Smokes collar. Smokes summoned enough courage to get on his feet and follow me out of the ring.

I drove home, drank a Modelo Negro (which will probably double in price after the tariffs) and went to bed. After an hour’s sleep, Smokes and I did some flyball style “go out” drills (with towel rolls near the center stanchion) and then called it quits.

On Sunday, Smokes and I went back to the trial. As I was walking through the crowd, a fellow competitor asked me if I had “fixed” Smokes’ “go outs.” I looked at her and remarked “You know that I don’t train that way. I don’t ‘fix’ things overnight.” And then a few mean thoughts bubbled up from the recesses of my mind. Smokes and I went outside and did a few blind retrieves with his towel roll partially hidden in the grass.

Team Smokes’ first class was Open. The judge asked me if my dog was feeling any better (she had been the Utility judge the day before). I told her that he was feeling much better.

Worried Smokes

Page 24: Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO … Issues... · Peggy Bowers Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO RN TD ACT1 Tops All Open A Contenders ...

And he was! Smokes sailed through Open with a very nice mid-190’s score. We went onto Utility.

Being an obsessive compulsive person, I had been dissecting our previous Utility performances, trying to figure out what was going wrong with the “go outs.” Although I hadn’t arrived at any conclusions, I decided that I would go into the Utility ring without any expectations. Forget about Style Points. Forget about the judge. Forget about the spectators. Just get the job done.

The pattern of the day was Utility I. I felt hopeful. At least we’d be able warm up for the “go outs.” Team Smokes walked into the Utility ring. Immediately I felt my blood pressure rise. Smokes must have sensed it, because after we completed the signal exercise, he collapsed to the floor. I calmly and quietly told Smokes “we can do this.” He got up and we went to the articles workstation. Smokes did a yeoman’s job with scent discrimination. Then he started to lose his nerve on the directed retrieve. He under rotated (to hide behind me) and took glove #1 instead of glove #2. I didn’t care. On command, he had left my side and retrieved a glove.

We finally got to the last exercise: directed jumping. I calmly set Smokes up. I calmly sent him out….and he did it! He did his first “go out!” Then he did the second “go out!” The judge looked at me, shook her head and said “I’m sorry” (since we had failed the directed retrieve).

“Oh, no! Don’t be sorry!” I responded. He did his ”go outs.” He conquered his demons.”

Smokes and I walked out of the ring transformed. I hugged Smokes and lifted him off the ground. My local trainer and several friends came over to congratulate us and give Smokes many well-deserved pats. Smokes soaked up the attention before we left the building on our usual post-performance walk.

Basking in the warm winter sun as we walked down the road, I realized that I had been putting too much pressure on Smokes. The pressure had worried him so much that he suffered a complete meltdown on his most problematic portion of the directed jumping exercise: the “go out.” Then it hit me: Leave the Style Points alone! They might be good for some competition dogs, but they are not good for Smokes. I cannot make him into something that he is not. Mr. Mellow is never going to be Mr. Panache.

This may be old news for some, but in case you have not heard, the American Kennel Club has a judge’s blog for Obedience and Rally on the web (link above under title)! The blog is a very useful tool for covering specifics in the Regulations, plus helpful for keeping up on current topics.

Pamela Manathon, Director of Obedience, Rally & Tracking writes, “We are replacing our traditional newsletters that were formatted in PDF documents and emailed out to each of you. Now we will be posting topics of interest by use of the AKC Obedience & Rally Judge’s blog. In doing so, we will be able to provide more timely write-ups and take full advantage of the blog’s Search and Category functions. This will make it easier for you to quickly research and access past information.

You will be able to sign up to get a notice each time something new is posted. If you misplace the link you will be able to locate it on the AKC website under “Judges Newsletter” just as you do now.

Our goal is to keep you as up to date as possible and give you the tools you need to be the best AKC Obedience & Rally Judge you can be. We can’t do it without you!”Sincerely,

Pamela Manaton, Director of Obedience, Rally & TrackingAnd the Field Reps… Diane Schultz, Mary Higdem and Sharon Hodgens-Wood

One can follow the Blog via email, if you wish. Under the red “Search” box, there is another box to enter your email address to receive notifications of new posts. Plus, there is an Archive which has links to older Judge’s Newsletters of the past. I really like this blog and I think you will too!

Eldorado's Magnum P. I. CDX BN GN GO RN TD ACT1, Flynn, will be three in June. In his short life he has gotten me through some tough times and has been the light of my life. Flynn finished his CDX in three straight trials and three straight wins!!  (197.5; 198; 195.5)

He continues to amaze me with his work ethic, enthusiasm and sheer joy for life.  He loves to train, which is great 'cause so do I...but he also has an off switch which is equally as important, 'cause so do I!  No matter what I ask him to do, he's willing to give it a try and to do his best!  At the Clarion trail 2015, he tied in Novice with a 198, and won the run off to win the Novice class... Then had to run off later that day for HIT against Fred Hulme's Cooper, (one of the top, if not the number 1, obedience Golden's in the country at that time).  To my disbelief, he won the head to head run off!  What a thrill!  But what really impressed me is that he was as enthusiastic and comfortable with the last run as he was for the first one which is great for a green dog!

He earned his tracking title at the Golden National in October of 2015. But I wondered , was it just a fluke?  I x also entered him in the Golden Triangle tracking test, as a backup and since the test didn't fill, I decided to run him again.  And again, he passed.  This track was significantly more difficult.  The first leg was 200 yards straight up a hill, right over a ground hog hole... he nailed it!

Our journey has just begun, Flynn and I are looking forward to having lots of fun throughout his career. I have so many people to thank for our success. Chris Browning for breeding such a wonderful dog and entrusting him to me. Gayle Geiger who mentored and encouraged us through tracking. While Fred Hulme has never worked with Flynn he taught me the basics and provided a good foundation for our obedience training. Ted Walshesky, also has never worked with Flynn, but has offered innovative training advise to help us over problem areas. And Rick Hood has worked tirelessly week in and week out to help us bring out our best. Thank you all. ~ Peggy Bowers

Front & Finish®2016 Open A Obedience Rating System

Compiled by Dave Pluth

We are delighted to provide the ratings of Open A Obedience Ratings for the 2016 competition year. This feature highlights the top dogs competing in AKC Open A classes. Congratulations to all teams placing in this year’s report!

Tabulation & Publication Protocol

The Front & Finish® Open A Rating System ranks dogs and handlers competing in AKC all breed obedience competition. Teams that earned qualifying scores of 170 or more points in Open A classes during a given competition year are included in the tabulations. Points are awarded based on the dog’s score according to a point schedule that accounts for variances in scores awarded by different judges. Please refer to the accompaning Point Table for details.

Ratings are published by Front & Finish® listing the top ten dogs ranking highest across all breeds (Top Ten All Breed), the top ten dogs ranking highest within their respective groups (Top Ten By Group), and the top ten dogs ranking highest by breed (Top Ten By Breed). Dogs must earn a combined total of eights points or more in a given year to be listed and all ties for a given position are reported.

Dogs are listed with the recognized AKC titles they received during the competition year and they may not reflect a dog’s current titles at the time of publication. Mixed breeds don’t include any breakdowns by breed since all dogs fall into one group.

“Catherine Zinsky’s book on developing attitude, attention and teamwork is a valuable addition to every dog lover’s library. It’s an easy read, and represents a well-written, organized, thought provoking and informative approach to the fundamental requirements for building a competitive team (human/canine) in any dog sport. Dog sport newcomers and veterans alike will find the seven-step approach she outlines is easy to follow and represents key considerations in teambuilding. I am delighted to recommend this publication to any and every participant regardless of the chosen sport.” — WARD FALKNER Ph.D. (Zoology) Two-time winner of the AKC/Eukanuba National Obedience Championship & twice ranked #1 All Breeds Obedience Winner – Canadian Kennel Club
