Close win for New Brighton girls – p9

BY GaBrielle Stuart

A group aiming to develop New Brighton through community- led projects has raised more than $20,000 in just under a month.

The New Brighton Strategic Ur-ban Rejuvenation Force raised funds through a series of communi-ty-led events in a 28-day campaign.

Funds raised by the community could be used to improve security in New Brighton, develop and reopen walkways and bring tourists to the area.

SURF founder  Tony Brooks said that a community newsletter would be the first project to be launched, which would enable people to vote

on proposed projects and keep them informed on progress.

Some ideas for concept projects being developed through SURF in-clude three New Brighton markets, an artificial wave facility and a cov-ered mall.

He said the next month would be spent developing structures and systems, as well as working on busi-ness proposals for several SURF projects.

“We’ve ended up with this net-work of really activated and moti-vated community groups, and we now need to get community struc-tures in place in order to effectively use that grounds well.”

Natasha Ferguson, sales and marketing representative:“Having recently moved back to Christchurch and seeing the progress of the rebuild, I think that there are other more worthwhile causes where the money could go into to benefit the city.”

Maria Abernethy, contracts administrator: “I can understand why they are not staging it, but it is sad because it’s good to have an international flower show in Christchurch, because we are known as the garden city. I do hope it will come back and I shall make a point of going.”

Lyndi Philpott, banker: “I guess that Christchurch’s money is better spent on the earthquake recovery. Perhaps bring it back in five years.”

Erin Inwood, writer:“Can we afford it, and did it bring us in any revenue? It may be a pragmatic decision by the council to get us back on our feet.”

Cat Graham, business owner:“I can understand it, but I can also see that the city needs something like it which is financially viable.”

The city council has decided not to run the Ellerslie International Flower Show next year, but is working to make it financially viable in 2016. We asked readers what their opinions are on this.

Felicity Black, office administrator: “I think that it is fine, especially if it was a money drain. They should replace it with something more economical to Christchurch.”

continue with the aim of raising funds to pay two people to man-age the projects full-time, as well as grants to develop business plans for major projects.

The SURF group is divided into three separate parts, with a commu-nity, events and business branch, so that funds raised by the community will be solely used for community projects rather than administration costs.

“Effectively it costs money to make money, and the campaign has cost us more than it has raised – but that’s not the point of it. We’re do-ing a job that needs to be done, and we’ve seen the community becom-ing re-inspired.”

The newsletter is expected to be launched in the next eight weeks, with costs estimated at about $3000.

Plans for a new art and crafts hub at the New Brighton mall are roar-ing ahead, with volunteers hard at work preparing for the opening next month.

Co-op shop Seaside Treasures will provide a base for craft classes and workshops in the area, as well as a venue for local artists to sell their pieces.

It will be run by volunteers, with profits from classes and sales at the shop donated to projects for New Brighton.

Organiser Shirley Smith said that more than 15 people had al-ready volunteered to help with set-up and running of the shop.

She said that no one group was behind the idea, with volunteers coming from across the commu-nity.

“We just thought it would be something lovely for the commu-nity. There are many creative peo-ple in New Brighton, so we think it could do very well.”

She said they hoped to host classes in all sorts of crafts, from woodworking to candle making.

She hoped to see the shop open next month.

The lease of part of the Har-courts Gold  New Brighton building at the mall is currently being negotiated as a base for the shop.

Harcourts Gold business owner Andrew Swift said that business had long-term plans to expand into the space, but he was happy to see it used by the community in the meantime.

“We welcome any opportunity to help support the community. We’re committed to making sure our coastal areas see a renewal, so we’re more than happy to work with these community initiatives.”

Profits from the shop will go to

community groups and initiatives in the New Brighton area.

Mrs Smith said that what groups received donations would be decided on a case by case ba-sis, but a list of organisations and causes receiving donations would be put up in the shop for commu-nity feedback.

Anyone interested in volunteer-ing, selling their creations or run-ning classes at the shop can phone Mrs Smith on 388 4790.

▌▌ IN BrIefSports centre siteRepresentatives from eight com-munity and sport organisations have been appointed to a city council advisory group that will recommend a site for the new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre, as well as the main fea-tures of the facility. The group met for the first time last week, and is expected to report to the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board in mid July before pre-senting their recommendations to the city council.

Drainage worksWork will begin next month on the replacement of a dam-aged city council pump station on Pages Rd, as well as sever-al  earthquake-damaged sections of the fresh and storm water network around New Brighton. Sections of Union St, Owles Tce and Beresford St will be reduced to one lane during the first stage of the works, which is scheduled to begin on June 23. There will be three stages to the project, which is expected to be completed in December 2015.

Memorial parkThe name Ripene Ma, which means ‘white ribbon’, was ap-proved by the city council last week for a memorial reserve on the site of the murders of Tisha Lowry and Rebecca Somerville on the corner of Hampshire St and Wainoni Rd. Landscape plans have been chosen and $45,000 from the city council urban renewal fund has been al-located to the project, but no date has been set for work to begin.

This dramatized and historically correct novel follows Patrick Murtagh, who as a poor Irish boy joins the British Army in 1820. After serving in India, he is discharged into the famines of the 1840’s in Ireland. As a man of ‘good character’ he is able to re-join the Army in 1847 and come to New Zealand with his family and with the offer of his own cottage and schooling for his children, as a Fencible Corp solider. In exchange for guarding Auckland for seven years and for the first time in his life he will own something he cannot carry – his own land.

After seven years’ service he is discharged and in 1860 moves out to Green Island, Dunedin, with his family, to buy his own small farm and become an Otago Pioneer. An appendix includes the family tree of the 1800s.This book will be launched in Christchurch on 12 June 2014. So when did this all begin for you?

I became a self-identified wiz-ard before I met the Wizard of New Zealand, and it is something that I have been interested in for a while. The word wizard origi-nally meant wise man, and that’s something that I have always as-pired to be. I am also motivated by fun, and I have discovered that, contrary to what I was told when growing up, the more strange and interesting you can make yourself the more fun you seem to have, and the more interested people become.

So what inspired you to take the leap and become a wizard?

One of the first things that sold it to me was the writings of Alan Moore, who has become famous through film adaptions of his books like V for Vendetta. He said that, rather than being only some-thing of fantasy, magic is some-thing that you can make. If you can write you are creating magic,

and when you read a book you are travelling back in history.

I’m a musician, and I consider music to be my form of magic. Through music you can change people’s heartbeats and make them dance, and not only that, you can make people think. That’s almost entirely positive, although you could also clear a room with music pretty effectively!

How do you balance your work as a musician with your work as a wizard?

I don’t really have to. Most of my living comes from teaching guitar and I think that everyone’s experienced that weird professor at university type of teacher.

When I decided to go all natu-ral and become a hairy person, I was concerned about that. But rather than people being turned-off and no one coming to les-sons, people are more interested. I think musicians are already known for being interesting types, so that helps.

Do you ever perform in cos-tume?

I have done. If you look up Lu-pus Lunar, my old band, there are videos of us all dressed as wizards performing back in 2012.

So what sort of things do you learn as a wizard’s apprentice?

It involves a lot of learning,

actually. The wizard of New Zea-land, before he took on the role, was the first sociology professor in Australasia. So there’s a lot of reading involved, because I have to catch up to a guy who is ex-tremely smart.

Part of what we’re doing is be-ing public intellectuals. Most modern intellectuals seem to have disappeared into the ivory tow-ers of universities, but if you trace history back to the intellectual founders, like the ancient Greeks, they did their work in public. Like the wizard, you could go into the square and talk with them or de-bate with them about their phi-losophies.

What is the biggest thing you’ve learnt over your first few months as an apprentice?

I think I have learnt two things. Firstly I have much more ability to get out there, and I’ve discovered that I’ve got more to say than I thought I might have – for better or for worse!

The other thing I’ve learnt is that you can’t go out there and try to illicit a reaction from people un-less you’re ready to be thoroughly changed by them. As much as I’m trying to change the city, the city has changed me.

How long do you expect be-coming a qualified wizard to take?

COFFEE BREAK: The Wizard of Christchurch (left), and his appren-tice, Ari Freeman, regularly meet for coffee at their favourite haunt on New Regent St.

Music and wisdom, all partAri Freeman became the first apprentice of the Wizard of Christchurch early this year. He spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about his family, his inspiration, and becoming a “hairy person”.

It’s not really about time. It’s really up to the wizard to decide when he’s finished. For me, I be-lieve that it is really important that there is a wizard, or some wiz-ards’ presence, in Christchurch. Whether I’m the right one to do it or not I have yet to see, but I’m quite happy for it to take another 10 years if that’s what it takes, that doesn’t bother me at all.

How have your goals for your life changed since you became an apprentice wizard?

I think my goals are similar, but it has made me active instead of passive. I’m someone who has al-ways spent a lot of time learning, but I have always been pretty con-servative.

I think that luck is basically be-ing open to opportunities. Once I started thinking actively, think-ing like a wizard, I was looking for an opportunity to come out, and when I met the Wizard of Christ-church I got that opportunity. There was an element of luck for him in that too, because he has been looking out for an apprentice for a while.

So what sort of reaction did you get from your friends and family when you told them you were becoming a wizard?

They were very positive about it.I think that people often justify

the things they do based on what they think will happen. Men shave even though the natural state of a man’s face is bearded, and wom-en shave their legs even though they’re naturally hairy too. Some people do shave because that’s how they want to look, and that’s

absolutely fine, but others just do it because they’re afraid of what people will think if they don’t.

It turns out that if you grow an enormous beard people actu-ally seem to treat you better. That may not hold true for women with hairy legs, but again it might not be as bad as people think.

So tell me about your family. Are you in a relationship at the moment?

Most of my extended family are based in Christchurch, so they’re pretty close.

My partner, Charlotte, is an international dress designer. She creates pieces like wedding dress-es and sells them across the world, mostly in the United States at the moment. We both work from home, so we keep each other com-pany.

What does she think of your work as a wizard?

She’s very supportive. I think

that part of the reason I’m around is to keep her life interesting! But she’s an interesting lady, and she’s not shy to stick out either.

Tell me about your back-ground. Have you always lived in Christchurch?

I grew up here from age seven, and my family travelled around a bit before that. I spent some time in Germany as an exchange stu-dent, and that had a big effect on me. I spent a year in high school in Germany, and learnt German as well as a lot of things from that culture.

If you want to learn about your own culture, I think the best thing to do is leave it. It made my iden-tity as a New Zealander a lot more important to me.

So are you settled long-term in Christchurch now?

I definitely plan to stay in Christchurch long-term – I don’t plan to live anywhere else, al-

though I would like to do more short-term travelling.

I think this is the most interest-ing place in New Zealand right now. There have been a lot of negatives, but on the positive side we’re a community like we’ve nev-er been before.

Sub-communities, like the Asian community, are integrated in a way that they weren’t previ-ously, and people who previously had no ability to get their foot in the door now have opportunities.

The initiative I’m most proud of is probably Gap Filler. It’s basically grass-roots, and through a lot of hard work they have transformed so many areas of the city from useless places to places where people can interact. It’s grown to the point that I believe it has had a permanent effect on the city.

What is your favourite place in Christchurch to visit?

I have come to really enjoy New Regent St. It’s another one of these initiatives, like Gap Filler, in that it’s entirely its own entity and quite grass-roots. It’s the last really beautiful street in Christchurch, and there are some great business-es and cafes there.

It sounds like your work keeps you fairly busy – do you have other hobbies?

Almost everything else I do re-volves around music. I perform both as a three piece and a single piece Blues band called The Blues Professor. I make a lot of my own musical instruments, so I’ve done a lot of guitar building and some electronics work, like amp building and things like that.

People have a chance to step out of their front doors onto a piece of New Zealand’s history, as door-mat-sized pieces of the QE II arti-ficial running track go up for sale.

After years of poundings from champion athletes from across the world and months as a stomp-ing ground for New Brighton art-ists, the QE II track will be sold in sections as a community fun-draiser.

The fundraiser had been organ-ised by volunteer working group the Go To Guys, who have cut salvaged sections of the track into doormat-sized pieces for sale.

The doormats will be sold for $15 each at the Renew Brighton offices at Carnaby Mall, with prof-its going to Strategic Urban Reju-venation Force projects.

Go To Guys volunteer coordi-nator Gary Hogg said that he had already received a lot of interest from people wanting to by the doormats as memorabilia, so he did not expect his stocks to last long.

The section of track was tempo-rarily used as flooring in the Cre-ative Quarter in the New Brigh-ton Mall, which is being cleared for sale.

A strong desire to celebrate their fellow student’s journey through cancer resulted in an award win-ning performance for Marian Col-lege at the Stage Challenge at CBS Arena recently.

Choreographed and led by year 13 students Alicia Craig, Shay Norton and Emily Rosevear, the six-minute piece chronicled the setbacks and successes of Libby’s story and involved 46 Marian stu-dents.

Alicia said that the piece was very personal to all of the stu-dents, but especially the year 13 group who had known Libby since

their first year at college.“We talked to Libby first and

she was really enthusiastic about having her story told.”

She said that the girls decided to convey the story in a positive way, with  three sections in the piece; friends, death and ultimately life.

“Because we are close to Libby, it was always going to be an emo-tional performance for us. But we also wanted for it to be inspiring, saying that people struggle every day, but to keep your faith.”

She said that a lot of time was spent to make sure that the mu-sical pieces worked well together

and expressed various elements of the story.

“We also wanted a really affirm-ing piece to finish with. The girls loved the finale – they embraced it and danced so well.”

With all the countless hours of practice put in, the group were delighted to win three excellence awards for their performance; in choreography, concept and cos-tume character.

“It’s a huge credit to everyone involved.  The girls really stepped up on the night with our best ever performance. Everyone was abso-lutely buzzing afterwards.”

NEW WHEELS: Windsor School pupil Connor Paynter and New Brigh-ton Catholic School pupil Lacoya Puru won new bikes last week for their entries in the Ourvets Parklands dog care colouring in competition.

The sale of the former North Beach Community Childcare Centre building will open op-portunities for other commu-nity groups to make use of the city council-owned site.

The city council community committee voted last week to sell the building on the Rook-wood Ave site to the Spencer-ville Residents’ Association for $1.

The association plans to re-locate part of the building to Spencerville in North Canter-bury for use as a community centre, and would be respon-sible for demolition and clear-ing costs at the site, estimated at up to $30,000.

That would leave close to 600 sq m of city council-owned property available, as well as more than $280,000

from insurance on the build-ing.

Childcare centre chairwom-an Elissa Smith said that she hoped to see community con-sultation held on the future of the land.

She said that with the future of several earthquake-dam-aged community and church buildings in the area still un-certain, it could provide a prime location for a commu-nity hall.

The childcare centre is now permanently located at the North New Brighton School, but she said that families would be sad to see the build-ings go as they held a lot of memories for the community.

City councillor Jimmy Chen said that the community would be given priority when

the use of the land was de-cided, but further city council discussions would need to be held before that could be de-cided.

A detailed engineering eval-uation found that the building met 40 per cent of the building standard, but a collapse mech-anism in part of the building meant that it was not safe for occupation.

The building was insured for $280,604, while repair costs were estimated at more than $213,000.

The city council is entitled to the full value of the repairs even if the building is not re-paired.

The sale of the building will be put to the city council for approval before it is con-firmed.

A visit from  vet Marcus Taylor to Barnardos Kidstart Early Learning Centre in Richmond proved valuable both for the children and their pets.

Dogs Goofy and Oscar enjoyed plenty of at-tention from the children during the visit, as they learnt about keeping safe with dogs and how to tell if a dog was happy, scared or angry.

Mr Taylor and the children checked Oscar’s heart, researched what he could and could not eat and took him for a run.

Learning centre head teacher Liza Hewison said that the animal care session was an amaz-ing opportunity for the children to learn how to enjoy and care for animals while in their de-veloping years.

“The real life experience was so valuable as it allowed us to support their curiosity and assist

them to develop a deeper sense of respect.”The visit was well-timed for Goofy, who was

examined and found to have a suspected ear infection and an infected paw.

ON THE MOVE: More than 70 people raced down New Brighton beach last weekend to help raise funds for the SURF New Brighton project.

HEROES: Flatman stripped out of his tights for the third New Brighton Project Undy 5 Hundy, closely followed by city councillor Glenn Living-stone.

More than 70 people gathered on the beach to support New Brighton last weekend, stripping down and running through the frost to raise $230 for the Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force.People from across the community joined in the run, with the oldest competitor being 88 years old, and the youngest just 17 months. Superhero Flatman supported the event, as well as several local politicians.

Christchurch fencer Sheldon Ogilvie is off to the Youth Olympic Games in China this Au-gust.

Sheldon is one of 78 fencers from all around the world who will compete at the games, which are being held for the second time.

Sheldon’s selection was based on his results at the World Cadets Fencing Championships which were held in Bulgaria in April.

He is ranked first in the New Zealand men’s epee category in the under-20 and under-17 age groups in spite of having just turned 16 last month.

Sheldon’s parents Leasa and Mark Ogilvie were “stoked and surprised” when Sheldon’s coach Daniel Kai Sang Chan, who represented  Hong Kong at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988, suggested their son could be an Olympic contender.

Sheldon began fencing at age 10.“From when he was two he used to often say

he wanted to be famous and ride a horse, shoot a bow and arrow and use a sword,” said Mrs Ogilvie.

Sheldon’s early adventurous tendencies were cemented by his enthusiasm for The Lord of the Rings films. However, the 2008 Olympics and the subsequent discovery his paternal grand-mother was a fencer may also have inspired him.

Archery and eight years of ballet, which he started in Pukerua Bay near Wellington after watching his sister’s classes, gave him good core strength and control of his limbs, which proved useful when he took up fencing.

“Sheldon is a very committed fencer. All year

around he trains six times a week including morning sessions at 6.30am. As his coach I am proud of him. Sheldon is a role model for the young people of our country,” said Mr Chan.

The Youth Olympic Games will be held from August 16 to 28.

By GaBrielle StuartNew features at this year’s Star Home and Leisure Show include a Future Christchurch display of re-build work taking place around the city.

Stories and videos about rebuild work around Christchurch will be shown in a giant 12m trailer at the show, displaying details on how work so far has been done and out-lining plans for the future.

Other new features include cook-ing demonstrations by MasterChef New Zealand finalist Bec Stanley, who has studied cooking tech-niques from across Europe, Africa, South America and Asia.

Now in its 15th year, plenty of free renovating and building advice will also be on offer at the home and leisure show, as well as a range of special deals on everything from joinery to appliances.

Show organiser Monique May-nard said that the show was a prime opportunity for people to talk to a range of experts  gathered under one roof, save money with show specials and scope the range of products and services available in Canterbury.

She said that people could look out for an increasing number of solar power exhibitors at the show, as well as growing numbers of con-struction and building companies.

Exhibits are still being booked for the show, and already exceed num-bers in previous years.

Free entry to the show has been sponsored by Kiwibank this year for all Cantabrians on Friday, as well as half-price entry on Saturday and Sunday.

Kiwibank Canterbury region

general manager Tracey Berry said that the sponsorship was part of an ongoing commitment to the region.

“We are entirely and utterly com-mitted to helping in any way we can with the rebuild.”

She said that the show gave Can-tabrians an opportunity to get ad-vice on their projects, and staff a way to engage with the community.

Visitors to the show will go into the draw to win a $6000 spa pool from 4 Seasons Home and Leisure.

The show will run from 10am to 5pm on June 27 to 29, at the CBS Canterbury Arena. Entry on Satur-day and Sunday costs $4, with Fri-day entry free.

Preschool, Nursery and Kindergarten

“Come down and have a look around, we have an open door policy, and look forward to meeting you and your child”.KAREN BYRNE

Lake Terrace Preschool & NurseryAt Lake Terrace Preschool, the nursery team believes that when children experience an environment where their care and learning needs are met with respect, understanding and consideration of individuality, they will flourish.

Their main objective is to build a responsive and reciprocal relationship with children and their families/whanau so they can work collectively to provide the best possible care. Together they gain and share knowledge about each child in their nursery environment and meaningful connections are made between the nursery and home.

Infants and toddlers take time to develop relationships, at first they may choose to respond to one particular caregiver. The teachers respect this choice and provide time and opportunity for children to initiate relationships.

Caregiving routines such as changing nappies, giving bottles, kai/meal times and sleeping along with natural exploration form the basis of their curriculum. Educators trust the child to be the initiator, explorer and self-learner.

Lake Terrace values the process of learning rather than the product knowing that learning for infants and toddlers happens on their own time and in their own way.

They believe in taking time to observe and watch infants and toddlers interacting in their

environment. Their observations allow them to respond to infants and toddlers cues and interests in predictable meaningful ways.

Infants and toddlers should be able to take on challenges independently with the knowledge that adults are available to support and guide them should they need it.

As a team the teachers value and respect each other and therefore are able to provide a truly respectful learning environment for the children in their setting.

They value the relationships our nursery children have with others in the preschool community, and provide opportunities for these relationships to foster and grow.

Lake Terrace Preschool, where learning, loving and partnership go hand in hand. They are currently taking enrolments for their beautiful nursery. Please feel free to pop in or call Rachel 384 4757 to organise a visit or find out more information.

Obese patientsprovide significantchallenges foranaesthetists

As well as increasing the need for surgery, obesity increases the complications associated with having anaesthesia for

surgery, says specialist anaesthetist Dr Nigel Robertson, in support of the New Zealand Medical Association’s (NZMA) call for a co-ordinated approach to tackling obesity in New Zealand.

In a major policy statement, the NZMA says obesity represents a public health crisis with major implications for New Zealanders’ health and wellbeing, as well as the future sustainability of its health system.

Dr Robertson is the Chair of the New Zealand National Committee of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He says that anaesthetists have been concerned for some time with the increasing number of obese patients on

operating lists. “Obese patients provide significant

challenges for us.”Obesity is associated with conditions such

as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnoea syndrome, where breathing is significantly impaired during sleep, ultimately leading to serious heart conditions that increase risk at the time of surgery.

Complications of obesity in the operating room can include difficulty with intravenous line insertion in very large limbs, airway and breathing management, positioning for anaesthesia and surgery, and breathing in the early recovery phase.

Post-operative complications such as respiratory failure, pneumonia and blood clots in the legs are also more common in the obese, as well as a much higher rate of heart attack, peripheral nerve injury, wound

infection and urinary tract infection. “Already, patients due to have bariatric

(weight loss) surgery are asked to follow a strict diet before surgery to help alleviate the associated risks and show they are serious about weight loss,” Dr Robertson says.

“Maybe it is time for other patients who are overweight or obese to be asked to try to lose weight before elective surgery. Even a small weight loss is beneficial, especially if patients can also undertake light exercise such as a 30-minute walk each day before surgery.

“As the NZMA says, we all have a responsibility as doctors to engage with patients who are obese as even brief interventions can lead to at least short-term changes in behaviour and body weight. This can decrease the risks associated with their surgery and their anaesthesia, and assist their recovery.

“As anaesthetists, we support the call for a co-ordinated approach to stemming what is becoming an epidemic of obesity in this country.”

Bloating Bloating is a common health prob-lem and can be caused by lots of things, including lactose intoler-ance, digestion problems and certain foods, drinks and medications.

Although seeing your doctor and keeping a food diary will help you tackle bloating, for a fast fix take a probiotic, which contains good bac-teria.

A probiotic helps because when our good bacterium is low, we are unable to break down food and pre-vent yeast overgrowth; this leads to bloating. Have a probiotic yoghurt with some berries for breakfast.

Flax seeds are also great for bloat-ing. They have high levels of fibre and can help keep the digestive sys-tem running smoothly.

Hay fever Hay fever affects many people and is an allergy typically caused by pol-len, usually in spring and sometimes summer, when trees and other veg-etation pollinate.

If you’re fed up of sneezing, a fast-fix for hay fever is to plug in an air conditioner, which can filter out 99 per cent of airborne pollen.

For a sweeter remedy, eat one ta-blespoon of honey a day. Although researchers have been unable to prove honey’s effectiveness in re-lieving hay fever symptoms, lots of people swear by it, claiming that the honey desensitises you to the pollen.

Anxiety Did you know that one in 50 adults in the UK are thought to suffer from an anxiety disorder at some point during their lives?

Although it’s natural to worry, anxiety can become a disorder if people overly worry without neces-sary triggers or causes.

The common term for anxiety dis-orders is Generalised Anxiety Disor-der, and it is thought to be caused by many things, including a chemical imbalance in the brain, the environ-ment you are in and your genetics.

Although medication and cogni-tive therapy are typically used to treat GAD, if you want a quick-fix to anxiety do some aerobic exercise.

According to a report on the in-fluence of exercise on mental health from Arizona State University, aero-bic exercise is the best choice for anxiety reduction. Or, if it’s not pos-sible to slip on your running kit, try some breathing techniques.

Insomnia Sleep disorders affect millions of people around the world. It normal-ly involves being unable to fall asleep or being unable to stay asleep.

Although insomnia can be a

symptom of other conditions, try shutting down your Facebook and Twitter accounts. A poll found two-thirds of the people who took part had trouble sleeping after using the sites, while others found it hard to relax.

If you can’t live without your so-cial media fix, you could always pop on the kettle and have a cup of tea instead.

The University of Maryland Medical Centre found that drinking chamomile tea can relax you so that you can fall asleep quicker.

Dandruff Dandruff can be a nightmare when it itches, but it is a common problem and is caused by the skin on your scalp flaking.

Although most of us suffer a little dandruff as our old skin cells are re-placed by new ones, severe dandruff can be an embarrassing and painful problem.

Severe dandruff is caused by fungi that grows on your scalp.

To treat more severe dandruff try shampoos that contain zinc, coal tar or tea tree oil.

Anti-fungal shampoos also help alleviate the symptoms of dandruff.

Other treatments include warm olive oil, which you apply to your scalp before rinsing.

Or mix apple-cider vinegar with water and apply to scalp, leaving it to dry.

Sun tanning can be highly addictive and often has more to do with how it makes people feel than with how they look, says a US dermatologist who is visiting Australia.

Ultraviolet (UV) light causes cells to release endorphins, the feel-good hormone, says Professor Steven Feldman, a speaker at the annual scientific meeting of the Austral-asian College of Dermatologists.

“It’s like a little hit of morphine.” This explains why some people

continue tanning even though it is turning their skin leathery. “We see patients in their 20s who look like they are in their 40s. They are clearly not tanning to look good, because they look terrible.”

Feldman has conducted a study that shows addicts go through with-drawal when given drugs that block endorphins.

In another study, frequent tan-ners chose a tanning bed that gave them UV light over one that had been modified to block the UV.

Both beds looked and felt identi-cal, but the tanners said the UV one was more relaxing.

“That was fairly definitive proof that the UV has an effect that people can feel and it drives their behaviour.”

Feldman says his findings are backed by other researchers who have found that UV light stimulates pleasure sensors in the brain associ-ated with other addictions.

A separate beach-based study showed 30 per cent of tanners were addicts. This was based on answers

to alcohol-abuse-type questions about how tanning affected them and why they did it even though they knew it was bad for them.

“Some people go to a tanning sa-lon a couple of times a year because

they want to look good for a special event. That’s not addiction,” says Feldman.

“Others go two or three times a week. It’s damaging their skin.

“That’s addiction.” — AAP

HEALTH

A cold drink doesn’t have the cooling effect that hot people expect, ac-cording to research that suggests it is better to pour it over your head and drink a cup of tea.

The problem is that the body compensates for the cold and keeps the core temperature constant, says University of Sydney researcher Dr Ollie Jay.

“When exercising in the heat, a cold drink causes an immediate suppression of sweat, which stops the body from cooling.

“The heat our body loses to warm up the cold drink is countered by the fact that the body decreases the amount of heat lost through the evaporation of sweat.

A person may be better off pour-ing liquid over their head, as long as it evaporates, he says.

“For hydration, people can drink

any temperature drink. “It does not have to be cold.” A hot drink like a cup of tea at

50 deg C causes more sweat and is therefore more cooling than a cold drink, he says. Somebody doing low-intensity exercise like gardening on a hot and slightly breezy day would probably be cooler after a hot drink.

However, the best way to cool down is to move to the shade, reduce your level of exercise or fan your skin, which promotes evaporation, he says.

According to Jay’s most recent discovery, the temperature sensors responsible for altering sweat output are in the abdominal area and not in the mouth or throat as previously assumed.

The finding is published in the current edition of the Journal of Ap-plied Physiology. — AAP

FOOD

Eating seasonal produce is an easy way to boost wellness this winter, says 5+ A Day.

Winter fruit and vegetables can be used in a variety of ways to help strengthen the immune system and maintain healthy eating habits.

“The immune system comes under attack during the cooler months and the temptation is to reach for not so healthy comfort food,” says 5+ A Day nutritionist Bronwen Anderson.

“A great way to stay healthy this season is to incorporate plenty of winter produce into your favourite recipes.”

Fruit and vegetables not only have nutrients to help boost the immune system and overall wellbeing, they also contribute to heart health.

“Different coloured fruit and vegetables have different benefits, which is why eating a variety of fresh produce is important to get the best mix of antioxidants, fibre and nutrients. Winter produce can also be used to create delicious and tasty meals,” says Bronwen.

• Here are quick, easy tips on how to make the most of winter’s produce.

Tamarillos: Originally from South America, tamarillos arrived in New Zealand in the 1890s. NuTriTioN: Tamarillos are a good source of vitamin C, essential for the growth and repair of many structures in the body, such as skin, muscles, bones, teeth and blood vessels. Quick recipe ideas: Team tamarillo wedges with blue cheese for a tasty addition to cheeseboards or add tamarillo flesh with apple and banana in cake or muffin recipes. This fruit is particularly nice with vanilla flavours. Give winter casseroles a flavour boost by adding the flesh of three or four tamarillos or try adding peeled slices to a beef or lamb stew.

persimmoN: Known as the “food of the Gods”, persimmons are also the national fruit of Japan. NuTriTioN: Persimmons contain vitamins A and C and fibre. Quick recipe ideas: Ripe persimmons become sweet and custardy when baked. Cut the fruit in half and drizzle with honey. Place cut-side up and bake until caramelised and golden. Serve with low-fat yoghurt or mascarpone. For a fresh twist on traditional roast chicken, add cubed persimmon to your stuffing. This adds colour and is a great complement to sage and thyme. Dice and freeze persimmon and use to thicken smoothies.

kiwifruiT: Kiwifruit seeds were introduced to New Zealand by Isabel Fraser in 1904. NuTriTioN: Kiwifruit are rich in vitamin C and are a good source of fibre. Kiwifruit is considered to be one of the most nutrient-dense fruits, meaning there are more vitamins and minerals per gram and per calorie in kiwifruit than most other fruit.Quick recipe ideas: For a nutritious snack, take chunks of peeled kiwifruit and mix with low-fat yoghurt. For a winter warming dessert, poach six peeled and halved kiwifruit in one cup of fresh apple juice, vanilla extract, two whole cloves, along with a pinch of nutmeg and two tablespoons of brown sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes and serve with low-fat yoghurt.

oraNges: Oranges were first cultivated in China over 4500 years ago. NuTriTioN: Oranges boast a wealth of

nutritional benefits. This sweet and juicy fruit is rich in vitamin

C, making it an immune-boosting superfruit.

Quick recipe ideas: Pair sweet oranges with fresh mint and nutty brown rice for a filling and nutritious lunchtime salad. To add a flavour burst to pork, coarsely chop oranges and mix with chopped red onion, coriander, a squeeze of lime juice and chopped fresh chilli. Try this

no-fuss salad or side dish; bake beetroot until

tender, mix with fresh orange juice and balsamic

vinegar.

kumara: New Zealand kumara are available in red, gold and orange varieties.NuTriTioN: Kumara is a good source of vitamin C, potassium and fibre. It also has a low GI rating, which means it provides a gradual, continuous supply of energy from one meal to the next. Quick recipe ideas: Kumara wedges make a nice alternative to fries. Slice kumara and lay on an oven tray with a little oil, bake until golden. Make a delicious winter soup using kumara and curry spices. For a quick kumara gratin, layer sliced kumara with onion slices and garlic in a baking dish. Pour over a little milk and bake in a hot oven until kumara has softened. • For more tips and recipes go to www.5aday.co.nz or find us on Facebook at facebook.com/5adayNZ or Fredge_5Aday on Twitter.

Kia ora, my name is Susie and I’m the visiting teacher for Barnardos Kidstart Childcare home-based services in Christchurch. My

role is to visit the children and support the educators who provide quality childcare from their home.

Today, I visited one of our wonderful educators, Barbara, and the four children she cares for. ey had just returned from a trip to the supermarket where they had purchased the ingredients to bake a cake for a ernoon tea. One of the children’s mothers was stopping by and the children wanted to surprise her with their creation. Baking is a fun experience that supports children’s learning in many di erent areas such as maths, social development, science and creativity. It was

great seeing the children w o r k i n g together while learning in this process.

Every day in Barnardos K i d S t a r t C h i l d c a r e home-based care is unique and lled with fun and learning. If you are looking for a home away from home experience for your child, this may be the right choice for your family. Call us today at 0800 KIDSTART.

“Music is a language and at this music school, we teach it like one,” says founder Nicky Fryer. “Our

way of teaching is quite di erent from private lessons, where the emphasis is on reading rst. It can be quite a solitary experience learning alone. Here at the music school, we use a ‘listen then sing then play’ approach, rather than starting with the reading. We can even start children on the piano at age four in this learning style, and they love it.”

Fryer established the ISM in 2003, having taught the programme in Sydney. She says it’s the only programme of its kind in New Zealand. “Private piano tutors who take our graduate students say our students have developed a real love of music and have acquired a wholesome, all-round musical knowledge.” Fryer says the ISM’s pre-school courses are unique in Christchurch, in that participants are learning music notation.

“It sounds serious, but it’s lots of fun,” says Fryer. “All the learning is done through games, movement, singing and music appreciation. However, the huge range of musical skills these students learn here are o en far, far more extensive than is taught in a traditional private piano lesson.”

e school has purpose-built music studios conveniently located upstairs in Barrington Mall. New beginner classes start every term. Enrolment enquiries can be completed online at ismchristchurch.co.nz.

The quality of the air we breathe a ects our health and ability to perform

South Island Hardware has been making homes warm and cosy for many years

We breathe in and out approximately 20,000 litres of air every day. It is therefore very important to ensure

good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation. Ventilation is the process of air exchange to provide the necessary air quality that meets the needs of the occupants for clean, fresh air. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stu ness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation. However as winter approaches, we start to shut up our houses to trap in the heat and, as a result, air quality can decline.

Ventilation includes both the exchange of air on the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. Filtered air supply for summer and ltered

and warmed air in winter creates a healthy environment in which to live and work. In case of poor or insu cient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not e ective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed.

To ensure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air o ers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. ey have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to di ering requirements.

Formed in 1959 as a 'Skiffle' group by guitarist John McNally, the band tread a similar path to The Beatles performing as part of The Merseybeat scene at Cavern Club, heading to Hamburg for a residency at The Star Club before they signed a deal with Pye Records to release their first album 'Meet The Searchers' in 1963. The album went to No. 2, 'Sweets for my sweet' got to No. 1 but when the band hit it big in the U.S. with the song 'Needles and Pins' 50 years ago in March 1964, they became a world famous band everywhere including New Zealand. The band has never split up and has continued to tour ever since.

In 2013 The Searchers returned to New Zealand for the first time in some years on a 60's music extravaganza with Gerry & The Pacemakers and their outstanding shows reminded fans of this legendary sixties group, just how important they are in the history of pop music. Now they're back on their own to give fans what they want; a full two-hour show of nothing but The Searchers 'Greatest Hits'.

Their resume of hits makes for impressive reading... ‘Sweets For My Sweet’ #1, 1963; ‘Needles and Pins’ #1, 1964; ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’ #1, 1964.

The band also recorded a long list of top 10 hits that include 'Sugar and Spice', 'When you walk in the room', 'Goodbye my love', 'What have they done to the rain', 'Love Potion No.9' and many more.

The show boasts all of The Searchers Greatest Hits plus some of the greatest 60's pop tunes ever recorded by the bands 60's music contemporaries.
