Pedon Vault ESRI Survey 123 Mobile App Soil Photos and Data Collection USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Wisconsin and the National Soil Survey Center in Lincoln, Nebraska have developed and made available a new application entitled “Pedon Vault.” The first of its kind, the new app offers a national database of field sites that display soil profile exposures and accompanying data. The application can display a large collection of soil samples showing characteristics of the samples’ horizons. Pedon Vault gives users a way to share their data by populating a database of sites that can be used by educators, scientists, farmers, landowners, schools, soil judging teams, and the general public according to Jason Nemecek, Wisconsin State Soil Scientist. According to Nemecek, users record soil exposures which populates a national database. Interested users can then identify field sites that demonstrate good soil profiles and data. Public Involvement Pedon Vault is a great first step toward citizen science involvement with the national soils program. According to Dave Hoover, NRCS National Leader for Soil Business Systems, Pedon Vault allows users to download and keep local surveys housed in the app for review and use. Users also are able to record, document, and upload photos, along with sharing and updating soil profile data around the country. Users can also pinpoint locations using location panels, full screen maps, and latitude and longitude for current locations. User’s Guide A Step-by-Step User’s Guide with application screenshots is available as a PDF file for anyone interested in downloading the application. The Guide includes a link to an online map that shows all Pedon Vault locations. https://go.usa.gov/xn3wh More Information For more information, please contact Jason Nemecek, Wisconsin State Soil Scientist at: [email protected] Soil Science Division October 2017 October 2017
