CHANGEIT HAS ALREADY BEGUN

We at STEVENS are at home in

Hamburg. We know what we are

talking about. That is why we built

the CARPO. The urban pedelec,

that doesn't want to be anything

but light, agile, fast, uncomplicated,

reliable, practical, sporty, comfort-

able, technologically intelligent and:

beautiful!

So: let's go back to “start”. Let's

leave the car at home. Let's drive a

pedelec. City life can be so lovely.

Our perspective cannot be to keep

using fossil fuels for motorized

mobility. Something has to change.

So says everyone who talks about

the future of E-mobility. But it has

already begun. Anyone who lives

in large cities and wants to be

mobile in an efficient way uses the

bike. Or goes one better: He takes

the pedelec. In most cases, the

destination is reached sooner –

and that not only on classic short

trips. With pedelcec assistance,

the personal range on the bike

doubles easily. And so does the

enjoyment. Your ride is smooth,

not marred by traffic jams but

mentally relaxed, not sweaty but

physically refreshing.

Endurance runner in the ideal central position: The compact motor beneath the bottom bracket.

Elegant, functional, sovereign – this is how a modern pedelec battery has to look.

of a long lifespan, high charging

cycle potential and efficiency. The

quick charge time is under three

hours. The compact battery unit

is simply clipped to the seat tube

or inserted into a special rack.

Construction

The proof that these two comple-

ment each other perfectly: Bosch

and STEVENS. Because the com-

pact motor, mounted extremely

low beneath the bottom bracket,

makes light, agile and clear chas-

sis, reduced to the essentials,

possible – or in other words:

STEVENS style.

Performance

Engine and human power in perfect

concert. Technologically, the Bosch

System continuously interprets three

parameters: speed, cadence and the

personal performance of the driver,

measured through a torque sensor in

the bottom bracket. Four freely select-

able levels and further subroutines

make the support extremely subtle

and efficiently adjustable. With Bosch

and STEVENS, E-mobility becomes

more individual than ever!

Energy

The Bosch motor is extremely

economical and smooth running.

From the battery, you can expect

power worthy of a global brand like

Bosch. Advanced storage technology,

optimally engineered for the goals

Page 11: Pedelec 2012 - Stevens Bikes

Is a pedelec different from an E-bike?

Not in the colloquial sence. If someone talks

about an E-bike, they mostly refer to pede-

lecs. However, there is a difference in the

precise technical definition. On a pedelec,

the motor is only active as a support for the

pedalling motion and it is limited to a speed

of 25 kph or 45 kph (S-pedelec). An E-bike is

driven by its engine at a speed up to 45 kph

even when there is no pedalling at all.

We at STEVENS love technical accuracy.

Therefore, we like to be linguistically accurate

as well and talk about STEVENS pedelecs.

Are pedelecs today technologically

mature?

High-end brand pedelecs definitely are. But

the market is booming, and therefore there

are a number of offers that have little or

insufficient performance. We at STEVENS

use two propulsion systems, BionX and

Bosch, that are global leaders, perhaps the

best. This E-motor competence meets our

radical quality demands and our experience

in building extremely potent bicycles. That

is how premium class pedelecs are made. If

you buy STEVENS today, you are making an

intelligent decision for a high stability of value.

Is special handling required for a

STEVENS pedelec?

No. Get on. Drive. Enjoy. You can increase

or decrease the pedalling support with a

button on the handlebar display – on the go.

The display shows you the battery charge

and the current support level among the

usual values like speed and mileage.

Will a STEVENS pedelec drive without

pedalling support?

Of course. Should the battery go flat before

you arrive at your destination, you simply

drive a bike that is slightly heavier than usual.

How long do the batteries last?

Modern Lithium-Ion batteries can – if main-

tained properly – be charged to capacity ap-

proximately 500 times. After that, the battery

remains operational – only its performance

decreases. Decommissioned batteries can

be submitted to your STEVENS dealer for

recycling.

Is special maintenance required for a

STEVENS pedelec?

Maintenance is no more demanding than for

any other bike. It makes sense to have your

STEVENS dealer do an inspection once a

year. Please mind the instructions for opti-

mal charging and storing the battery.

What must be observed in winter?

Protect the battery from frost, store it

between 7 and 10 °C. If the battery is not

in use, it will nonetheless discharge slowly.

Recharge it every two to three months

during longer pauses. This way, you avoid

deep discharge. Such a complete dischar-

ge would impair the function of the battery.

By the way, extreme depletion through use

cannot lead to a deep discharge!

E-Courier SL – obviously STEVENS like: super light! Just as open for every driving style. Equipped just as lavishly. The difference: If you opt for an E-Courier, you drive with a mid-mounted engine and the Bosch system. In the Forma line, this has a popular advantage for many: Access is extremely comfortable because of the unbeatably low frame.

StevenS PeDeLeC 2012 15

Page 16: Pedelec 2012 - Stevens Bikes

16

Page 17: Pedelec 2012 - Stevens Bikes

You need only accept one limit with

a pedelec: If you go faster than 25 kph,

only your own performance counts.

Because obviously the bicycle principle

applies: Joy through your own efforts.

Test drive a pedelec. At your STEVENS

dealer. You will experience the joy of

biking. Totally different. Much better

than can be said with words.

You enjoy riding your bicycle. Be-

cause it keeps you fit, because it is

sensible, because it's ingeniously

easy, because it makes you happy,

because you want to treat yourself to

something good.

We invite you: Sacrifice nothing of that

and try a pedelec. All the beautiful

motivations for biking are still there.

There's a simple reason: Pedelec

means pedal electric cycle. And that

means, as with a normal bike, you

only advance through personal effort

– because you need to pedal. The

only miraculous difference: You are

supported by an electrical engine.

How much is up to you. Maybe just a

little, when you're coasting along won-

derfully. Or with your energy tripled on

a steep up-slope.

As little weight as possible – this is the principle every STEVENS bike concept follows. And of course the same goes for the pedelec. That's why you'll ex-perience the new E-lightness on the E-Randonneur SL in perfection right from the start. Because SL means super-light.

An E-Randonneur doesn't dictate a specific driving style. You can go fast and sporty, or leisurely saunter along. The excellent technical equipment af-fords you all the safety and liberty you desire – even for tours of more than 80 km with a single battery charge. You'll rely on a high-performance disc brake system and will always find your optimal randonneur rhythm with its 18 gears. Have a nice trip!

Two in one: motor and generator integrated into the rear hub.

Unmistakeably STEVENS E-Randonneur: box-battery, protected by the frame.

Per its R-function (recuperation)

it acts as a generator and charges

the battery – for example when

you're coasting downhill.

Construction

The E-Randonneur series is unique

in its construction. Together, the

engineers of STEVENS and BionX

have integrated the battery inge-

niously – compact in the centre

of the frame and at the same time

very low. Because of the central

and low centre of gravity, the

super-light E-Randonneur SL

drives incredibly safely and are at

the same time agile and dynamic.

Performance

Pedelec means there are two power

sources – motor and pedalling. The

intelligent electronics of the BionX

system matches these two harmoni-

cally. You can choose at the press

of a button, on the go, how strong

you want the motor assistance to

be: 35, 75, 150 or even 300 percent

more than the contribution of your

legs. So you can simply fly up the

next mountain!

Energy

Unclip the box-battery, plug it into

the charger and its full energy will

be restored in four to six hours!

The particularly lightweight BionX

motor in the back wheel doesn't

only consume power, by the way

– it also generates power.

STEVENS AND BioNX

StevenS PeDeLeC 2012 21

Page 22: Pedelec 2012 - Stevens Bikes

Do it better! That's how it starts, back in

1990. They know good bicycles inside and

out, the avid cyclists and bike salesmen, the

brothers Wolfgang and Werner von Hacht

from Hamburg. “But yet better bicycles can

be built.” They have often talked about it.

Now they want to prove it to themselves.

The time for STEVENS has come.

In 1991 it's a time for new beginnings in

reunited Germany. That includes the bicycle

trade. The Eurobike, today the most impor-

tant bicycle show in the world, premières in

Friedrichshafen. There, on the bike trade's

new stage, among the big names, the first

collection of the Hamburg start-up is dis-

played as well:

Light construction with the highest possible

technical precision, geared for performance

and quality without compromise. And the

design: uncomplicated, transparent, seminal!

STEVENS is distinctively STEVENS from the

beginning.

The idea of the bicycle is ingeniously simple.

It is equally plain and simple to implement,

which obviously hits the nerve of many

people. After only two years, more than 200

specialized bicycle shops stock the new

brand, there are the first STEVENS branches

and not even five years after opening, it has

happened: A STEVENS racing bike scores

highest honors in “Tour”, Europe's leading

racing bike magazine.

Since then, hardly a year goes by when we

on the Elbe aren't excited about a distin-

guished award: Several times, the readers of

the magazines “BIKE” and “MountainBIKE”

elect a STEVENS creation to “Bike of the

Year”. The trade magazine SAZ repeatedly

nominates the brand “Germany's most

attractive bicycle brand”.

The Stiftung Warentest gives their “very

good” and the title of “best product” to

Hamburg. The magazine “Trekkingbike”

presents their highest award, the “mile-

stone”... and not to forget: the countless

outstanding test results from twenty years.

We are proud of so much praise. It mo-

tivates. So do the critical judgements of

our “test drivers”, all the professionals and

amateurs riding our bikes in training and

competitions. World champions, Olympic

champions, world cup winners, European

champions, national champions are among

them – mostly in the particularly merciless

disciplines of triathlon, cyclocross, time trial

racing. They are relentless when compet-

ing for the best performance. They are

remorseless in their high expectations of

their bikes. This helps us like nothing else to

keep true to the STEVENS principle for the

next twenty years: Doing it better!

THE STEVENS PRINCIPlE VALID FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS.
