The concept for the arts and community
campus addition is to respect context.Derived by projecting the existing ordering
system onto a grid in plan and section, the
additions columns, glazing, & changes
in materials take shape while playful
manipulations in form and claddingsystems add daylighting and scalefullness
and suggest activity within.
The proposed design creates a campus
quad that focuses activity inward to the
courtyard while attracting pedestrians and
nearby residents with multiple indoor and
outdoor circulation paths.

The central library embraces Talbott Street,
an historic residential district, and faces the
courtyard to provide a transparency to the
interior activity as well as its accessibility to
the public.
The theater angles down toward the
smaller houses providing indirect north
light. A pronounced entrance into the
theater also funnels people into the social
gallery and caf.
Bordering the busier Pennsylvania Avenue
leading to downtown, the tallerrecreation
center features industrial sawtooth skylights
with exposed trusses and concrete panel
walls.
The gallery walk links all the spaces
together. Its semi-transparency draws
people through the spaces with views to
the street, courtyard and second oor
showing the inter-connectivity of the uses
and architectural character of each
building.

The rigid structural organization of the
library and quad is broken up with
an organic patterned facadecomposed of glass panels wrapped in a
perforated metal screen and patina metal
panels for shading. The tree symbolizes
the knowledge within the library and the
creative growth that the communitycenter cultures.
The quadresponds to the facade as brick

The brick works its way past an existingseating sculpture, perfect forsketching and people-watching, before

Because of little planning and denition
of public space, the orientation and
sponteneaity of growth of a favela form
an organic and irregular organizational
mesh with narrow, winding paths. The
solution required an idea that would bring
the community together to generateincome to maintain the roads, publicspaces, and city services while integrating
the villa into the formal city economically
and socially.
In the conceptual diagram nodes at
intersections of paths connect public
amenities and provide pointsof interest to encourage residents tointeract and discover other areas of their
community.
Dening spaces and experiences that
would improve the quality of life and
educate the people about the importance
of community space, sustainable methods
of construction, and sustainable strategies
will lead to greater responsibility and pride
for their buildings and integrated systems
as well as their greater role in society.

studio work: artists mobile studio14off the grid mobility + exibility
For a live/work studio in a space asconned as this street legal 8.5 wide x14 tall trailer, privacy with the ability toutilize nature as a living room will allowthe greatest exibility of use and comfort.Claiming outdoor space is vital for bothfunctionality and inspiration for the artistin addition to its mobility for tours or livingsimply off-the-grid.
The operability of the facade gives theartist control over daylighting, ventilation, and security. Double wooden slatted
screens are offset to allow diffuse lightwithout compromising privacy. The exteriorscreen also folds up as an awning andshading device while the interior screenand enclosure can remain open orclosed to the elements. The screens formoutdoor spaces for art displays when open, providing a transition between the smallinterior and vast landscape.

Oftentimes a picture exposes too
many details and loses the emotion
a sketch can portray. When you
sit to do a sketch, you take in the
people, the time lapse, and all the
dynamic elements that a camera
loses. Sketching is important to any
designer in order to communicate
a concept and truly capture the
essence of the place.
