Pearl Academy introduces 4 schools of Creative

Learning to make young minds look at the million

opportunities in the world, just waiting to emerge as life

changing moments.

These schools specialize in imparting a structured and

balanced combination of theory and practice in different

fields of Design, Creative and Business Arts.

Fashion and Lifestyle Business, this is the right place to

nurture your dream. Equipped with sound knowledge of the

industry and practical and personal skills required to stand

It was only after my graduation when I started working in the field I felt something

amiss, which is when I was introduced to Styling for Interiors. As a stylist I worked

with various magazines like Elle Décor, BBC Good Homes, Casaviva and also did

freelance shoots for Maxim and Femina. I have also styled brochures for various

stores and done up store and window displays. As a field I think Interior Styling is

an extremely upcoming field as more and more people are moving into builder

houses and semi-furnished rented apartments where there is a greater need for a

decorator to help do up the space than a full-on designer.

The program provides an overview of the major aspects of styling, so that you can alter the look of a

space without changing the structure of it. The program comprising 3 trimesters (40 credits each) aims

to train stylists for the furnishing and interior designing industries to perform as part of a team to style

spaces or as individual entrepreneurs. Topics covered in the program include:

Styling of spaces for function and ambience

Contemporary interior styles

Creating your own style through space visualization

Color conceptualization to make color work for you

Material explorations

Furniture & Artwork in interiors

Guiding you in product selection

This program is designed for students with an interest in sourcing and resourcing materials for use in

styling of homes. It aims to provide comprehensive understanding of developing a personal style through

visual communication and its application in the interiors and soft furnishings industry through classroom

lectures, practicals, market study and sourcing, lab work, assignments and design projects. The final

trimester consolidates and develops your ability to stylize and plan your own work through a Final

Project.

At present I am working as Motion Graphics Designer at ELITIFY.com. Since my

childhood, I have been fascinated with design, colors and wanted to work in a

creative field like design. I feel a designer/artist has the freedom of expressing any

emotion, feeling, happiness or even sadness through his/her artwork, it can be

through any form of art. I have experienced that design solves problems and helps

explore new avenues. My current objective is to take up design related projects so

that I am able to apply my ideas and techniques that I have learnt.

Communication Design essentially connects people through meaningful and effective

conversations/communication, which then leads to action. This is possible if one understands why people do

what they do and provide appropriate solutions to various challenges.

Today Communication Design is more human-centric and social, more rooted in technology and science than

ever before. Therefore, a Communication Designer is essentially becoming a 'Connectivist,' with basic

competence to establish and nurture connections between different disciplines. He/she acts as responsive

designer/ entrepreneur/ consultant/ manager rather than a designer.

This program helps look at the essence of communication where design can help improve and find meaningful

solutions through suitable media. These solutions can take the form of communication products, systems,

services, or experiences. It provides opportunity for graduates from varied backgrounds to come together

and co- create effective communication solutions globally as well as locally.

During this program students will gain the proficiency in 2 main aspects of communication design: Strategic

Design Thinking and Communication Design Application and Practice

The course is delivered in conjunction with Domus Academy, Milan. Students have an option of

doing a paid 4 week module in Milan and get additional exposure to the international industry.

The course imparts retail business knowledge of fashion and lifestyle products as core offerings supported by

services and technology to create experiences in the dynamic retail landscape.

Retailing in India is one of the strongest pillars of the economy as it accounts for an estimated 35% of the

country’s GDP. The phenomenon further gathers momentum as consumers increase spending on the

discretionary goods (fashion products) other than needs and also as government relaxes FDI regulations.

This results in the mushrooming of retailers, both national and international, in a variety of formats

including e-tailing, creating a potential market for the skilled retail professionals.

The course bridges the gap by providing focused learning comprising theoretical concepts of fashion,

retailing, business strategy, marketing, buying and merchandising, etc. The candidate further develops as an

enabler by experiencing industry interface in the diverse areas of retail operations, merchandising and visual

merchandising.

AWARD CONFERMENT

The courses are expected to be validated by Nottingham Trent University (NTU), UK. NTU is one of the

globally renowned fashion education institutions.

The NTU degree is recognised around the world for higher studies and employability.

The learning structure, spread across first, second and third years of the course, is described as Level

1, Level 2 and Level 3 respectively. The three levels attend to the degree learning.

Level 1 concentrates on the basic understanding and skills significant to business management as well as

the chosen discipline.

Level 2 encourages students to engage their learning at higher stage with a scope for electives. The

student has higher exposure to the commercial context and application is encouraged through projects in

the real world. An option to study elsewhere in India or abroad is also provided, at approved institutions

under a student exchange scheme with full credit for merit achieved there, over a duration spanning

8 weeks. Tuition fee is not payable to the overseas institution, but is subsumed within the fee payable to

the Academy. Students only bear travel, boarding, lodging and out-of-pocket expenses. Industry

internship is also mandatory to offer necessary market exposure to students. Industry internship spreads

across 8 weeks.

Level 3 provides students with options to specialize within the domain of the chosen course. It culminates

in dissertation/business project which gives the students the opportunity to project original problem

solving work. The students’ works are presented or exhibited to an industry audience towards the end of

this level in an annual event called PORTFOLIO. The best works are honored publicly and receive special

awards.

The learning structure is designed to afford for students increasing autonomy and responsibility in their

learning from Level 1 to Level 3, and correspondingly lower contact time. Students are mostly

instructed at Levels 1 and 2 and mentored at Level 2 and 3. In taught modules, there is recourse to on-

line delivery as the Academy’s delivery approach matches with worldwide practices.

ASSESSMENT

The students' performance is assessed by the Progression Board at the completion of Levels 1, 2 and by

the Examination Board at the completion of Level 3. The Examination Board constituted separately for

each course includes two external examiners, one from overseas and the other from domestic sources,

and a verifier appointed by NTU. The Board's decisions are final and binding.

AWARD CEREMONY

On successful completion of the Final Level, a student is declared qualified for the BA (Hons.) award,

which is conferred at the convocation in the calendar year of passing (normally held in the month of

October).

Level 1 concentrates on the basic understanding and skills significant to the chosen discipline. The

student learns across a range of knowledge, techniques and applications.

Level 2 exposes students to the commercial context and encourages them to engage in application

through industry relevant projects. An option to study elsewhere in India or abroad is also provided, at

approved institutions under a student exchange scheme with full credit for merit achieved there, over a

duration spanning 8 or 12 or 16 weeks as per policy at destination institutions. Tuition fee is not payable

to the overseas institution, but is subsumed within the tuition fee payable to the Academy. Students only

bear travel, boarding, lodging and out-of-pocket expenses. Industry internship is also mandatory to offer

necessary market exposure to students. Industry internship spreads across 8 or 16 weeks as per the

student’s choice. There is flexibility between choice of internship and overseas credit exchange, such that

between any one or both together stipulated credits are covered.

Level 3 creates a multi-disciplinary exposure as students have the opportunity to learn from any other

discipline available at a given campus than their own. This year further engages students in the execution

of the final project or collection. This Level provides students to demonstrate originality. The students'

AWARD CONFERMENT

The courses are validated by Domus Academy, Milan, Italy. Domus Academy is one of the globally

renowned fashion and design education institutions. The Award is conferred by Pearl Academy. The

award is recognized for higher studies and employability across the world.

SEMESTER ONE

In Semester One, all courses start with a common curriculum which exposes students to design thinking

across design contexts in terms of society and environment, design sensibility in terms of the

conceptualization as response to the contest and design methodology and language. Following this,

students pursue the same orientation but within the context of the subject domain of their course. Both

segments of orientation install the necessary foundation for students to imbibe the rest of the discipline,

of which the basics are covered in rest of the first semester.

SEMESTER TWO

In this semester, students advance in their individual disciplines. Time is devoted to provide discipline-

based grounding with the help of subject modules that cover both theory and practice. The students begin

to enjoy more autonomy but also shoulder added responsibility. Practical work is often group based.

During this semester students have an option to study at Domus Academy for a duration of 4 weeks, for

which tuition fees are payable separately. The student also has to bear the cost of air travel, stay, meals

and out-of-pocket expenses. The students receive a completion certificate from Domus Academy and the

credits earned are accounted in the overall merit.

After the completion of this semester, students undergo internship in an organization (arranged by the

Academy). The internship creates valuable industry exposure, facilitates further learning in the

subsequent semesters and makes the students understand industry reality and practicality.

SEMESTER THREE

After the industry exposure students resume studies, more confident, mature and commercially aware

of the industry. The students progress through advanced subject learning and start handling

individual projects. Autonomy and responsibility increase commensurately. This semester orients the

students towards the final semester.

SEMESTER FOUR

In this Final Semester, the students engage in original work, which reaches fruition through a

mentored process. The students' works are publicly exhibited to an industry audience and the best

works are awarded. At times, the industry-sponsored projects create gateways for students’

employability.

The Academy offers 2 MA Courses:

• MA Design (Fashion & Textiles) [MAFT]

• MA Fashion Marketing [MAFMG]

DURATION

Both courses are structured as Bridge (1 Semester) + MA (3 Semesters).

Semester-0 (Bridge): August - December 2015

Semester-1 : January - May 2016

Semester-2 : August - December 2016

Semester-3 : January - May 2017

The Bridge is a provision for students who would benefit from a stronger base in fashion and related

disciplines to qualify them well for successful completion of the following MA learning. The holding of an

eligible qualification is not sufficient for joining the MA course.

At the time of interviews, all candidates will be thoroughly assessed by Pearl Academy for suitability to

be enrolled to MA, ie. Bridge (Semester 0) + MA (3 Semester Course) or directly to the Semester 1,

based on the candidates' credentials.

2 YEARS MASTERS DEGREE

Page 55: PearlAcademy_Prospectus2015

104 105

Semester 2

In this semester, students take their previous learning to a higher, complex and sophisticated stage of

understanding and engage in application through projects, desirably sponsored by industry, and therefore

come to terms with industrial and commercial reality.

This semester facilitates students to choose an elective subject that suits their employability needs,

besides studying project management as a compulsory subject.

On successful completion of Semester 2, students are issued a mark sheet with the awarded Semester

Aggregate Mark measured on 120 credits (cumulative of Semesters 1 and 2) and progress to Semester 3.

Semester 3

In this Semester, a student engages in a Masters Dissertation leading to the MA Degree. This semester

provides maximum scope to design individual final research brief and implement it successfully. This

facilitates a student to make an outstanding final work. It also helps to demonstrate a well-honed and

highly specialised application of the chosen discipline. On completion of the Masters Dissertation, the

student has a second engagement in the industry, Professional Practice 2, for higher understanding and

superior experience of market reality.

ASSESSMENT

The students' performance is assessed by the Progression Board at the completion of Semesters 0 (where

applicable), 1, 2 and by the Examination Board at the completion of Semester 3. The Examination

Board is constituted separately for each Masters course to include two external examiners, one from

overseas and the other from domestic sources, and a verifier appointed by NTU. The Board's decisions

are final and binding.

EMPLOYABILITY

The following career opportunities are available to students who qualify the Masters Degree Award:

Industry employment: Students may be recruited by the industry in mid-management echelons, with or

without a stint of traineeship, depending upon recruiters' policy. The Academy's Corporate Relations

Department facilitates placement.

Self-employment: Students may create freelance consultancy service or set up their organised business.

The Academy's Entrepreneurship Cell facilitates enterprise ventures by arranging interface with external

support institutions.

Further studies: Students may advance to M.Phil. or Doctoral studies wherever opportunities exist in

India and overseas. The Academy's Higher Education Cell facilitates information on opportunities,

eligibility requirements and admission procedure.

Consultancy, research, advertising and market research sectors employment: Students may be absorbed

in these sectors for their analytical and personal qualities.

Teaching: Students may be recruited by fashion education institutions at entry levels of teaching career.

The Academy's inter-institutional networking supports students in the process.

AWARD CEREMONY

On successful completion of the Final Semester, a student is declared qualified for the MA award, which

is conferred at the convocation in the calendar year of passing (normally held in the month of October).

On successful completion of Semester 1, students are issued a mark sheet with the awarded Semester

Aggregate Mark measured on 60 credits, and progress to Semester 2.

Semester 2

This semester of the program is project-driven. Students present a group project based on design trend

forecasting, analysis and interpretation. They also work on an individual project that focuses on the

development of options for creative application(s). Students, in this phase of learning, must develop

creative and practical abilities required for advanced design application through the individual project,

which may be converted to actual prototype development in the Final Semester.

On successful completion of Semester 2, students are issued a mark sheet with the awarded Semester

Aggregate Mark measured on 120 credits cumulative of Semesters 1, 2, and progress to Semester 3.

Semester 3

This semester primarily involves the development and execution/application of innovative design

prototypes. Such prototypes need to be concept-driven, and are derived from the previous semester's

Individual Project. Students are expected to deepen their concept development in chosen area of work,

which is demonstrated through a Masters Project.

Students are expected to create their own resources, and this may include activities such as:

a. Producing own design presentation(s)

b. Networking with external resources; and

c. Independently developing or innovatively using appropriate raw materials

After the completion of the Masters Project, the students link the project to the industry with

Professional Practice 2 in the industry.

MA Fashion Marketing

Semester 0 - (Bridge)

Horizontally enrolled students of MA Fashion Marketing undergo a curriculum with the aim and purpose

to build sound grounding and competencies that are at a par with vertically-enrolled students who enter

Semester 1 directly. Semester 0 is designated as Bridge Studies.

The structure, treatment and content of the semester orient students towards learning skills and concepts

for the next three semesters of degree studies.

Bridge Studies enable students with non-fashion backgrounds to learn and understand the fashion

industry in all aspects including the entire fashion chain and the process of demand and supply. Students

understand how business organisations in diverse shapes, sizes and constitutions conduct their operations

with pertinent management styles and approaches. A thorough grounding in basic research methodology

and quantitative methods is also provided. Communication skills are nurtured.

Semester 1

In this Semester, the learning concentrates on the holistic understanding and skills significant to Fashion

Marketing. The focus is on marketing strategy, systems and processes. Advanced research methods and

models are also learnt and applied. At the end of the semester, students undergo Professional Practice 1

in the industry.

On successful completion of Semester 1, students are issued a mark sheet with the awarded Semester

Aggregate Mark measured on 60 credits, and progress to Semester 2.
