Peacekeeping Training Programme

Peacekeeping Training Programme

Enhancing Capacity, Building Peace. The Peacekeeping Training Programme at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR PTP) contributes to the effectiveness of peace operations by improving the preparedness of civilian, military and police personnel interested in deployment to field missions.

Topics for UNITAR PTP courses are decided based on trends and issues related to relevant UN resolutions and current world events. UNITAR PTP identifies the needs of beneficiaries in order to develop topics that are diverse, dynamic and have a real impact on the efforts of worldwide peace operations.

UNITAR PTP is supported by an Advisory Board, comprised of six esteemed individuals with highly pertinent professional experiences. UNITAR PTP draws on their vast experience and knowledge in order to ensure that the programme remains on the cutting edge of training for peace operations.

Training Methodology

UNITAR PTP adopts an approach to training that highlights experiential and collaborative learning. This approach focuses on the learning needs, interests and styles of participants to ensure the relevance and retention of content and puts particular emphasis on the active participation of learners through practice-oriented learning environments.

UNITAR PTP’s approach allows participants to share knowledge and experiences and contribute dynamically to the learning process. Through this process, participants not only acquire information but also contribute to the construction of knowledge in a way that is meaningful and directly applicable to the reality of peace operations. Instructors guide participants through this process, delivering and conveying information, clarifying doubts and supporting participants through different activities.

UNITAR PTP’s approach to training puts particular emphasis on monitoring and evaluation. This process continuously develops course structure and activities to better suit participants’ areas of interest.

Target Audience

Courses address a broad audience of civilians, such as students, researchers, academics and individuals from governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as national and regional military and police personnel of every rank and function. Participants are not expected to have prior experience in or knowledge of the field. However, for advanced courses, a general understanding of the structure, components and functioning of a peace operation is highly advisable.

“UNITAR PTP is a reflection of how objective and futuristic the whole training process is, in taking a look at what will be the requirements of tomorrow and preparing peacekeepers to be ready to fulfill their assigned roles in those specific fields. PTP has done extremely well in this respect.”

Lt. General Obiakor - Former UN Military Advisor for Peacekeeping Operations and Former Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL)

Training Courses

UNITAR PTP provides high-quality training comprised of both basic and advanced courses. Basic courses are designed to provide an introduction to peace operations and major related issues. Advanced courses are designed to provide specialized training on specific components of peace operations and major related fields.

Courses are delivered in a variety of formats, i.e. face-to-face, on-line or blended (involving a combination of on-line sessions with face-toface sessions).

In line with UNITAR PTP training methodology, all courses involve participants actively through discussions, feedback rounds and group exercises. Courses privilege experiential and collaborative learning, where participants learn how to apply theories to concrete situations, either through case studies, role plays or simulation exercises. Courses take advantage of the experiences, knowledge and personal resourcesof participants, allowing them to contribute dynamically to the learning process.
