PEACEFUL TIDINGS! From Fredsville Evangelical Lutheran Church Serving in Jesus’ name since March 1871 Blessed with heritage, vision for the future and peace in the present Monthly Newsletter of Fredsville December 2015 A message from Pastor Lisa, Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight! Christmas in lands of the fir-tree and pine, Christmas in lands of the palm-tree and vine, Christmas where snow peaks stand solemn and white, Christmas where cornfields stand sunny and bright. Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight! Christmas where children are hopeful and gay, Christmas where old men are patient and gray, Christmas where peace, like a dove in his flight, Broods o're brave men in the thick of the fight; Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight! For the Christ-child who comes is the Master of all; No palace too great, no cottage too small. Ever since I became a pastor I have read this poem in the quiet of my office between services on Christmas Eve. It is a simple poem that was given to me by a parishioner in my first call. I guess for me it has been a reminder that the Christ child has indeed come, even in the busyness of Christmas services, and gift wrapping and unwrapping, and family gatherings. It is a reminder to me that Christ came for me too, no matter how small and insignificant I might feel. It is a reminder that Christ has come for All of us, no matter where we gather, no matter what our age, no matter our sex, no matter if we are alone or in a huge family. May you be reminded this Christmas that Christ came for you, for you matter to God! Merry Christmas! Pastor Lisa

A message from Pastor Lisa,

Everywhere, everywhere, Christmas tonight! Angel Tree Benefits Bremwood Students Remember the students at Bremwood this holiday season. Pick your angel(s) from the Angel tree in the Gathering Space and have fun shopping. Then just return your item(s), unwrapped, with the angel attached, and place it under the tree. The Bremwood students celebrate Christmas early before some of them return home for the holidays, so please be sure to return your gifts to the church no later than Sunday, December 13.

The High School youth will be gift wrapping the Angel Tree gifts on Sunday, December 13th after the catered meal. Donations of wrapping paper, tape and bows would be appreciated. Following the wrapping we will deliver the gifts to Bremwood. We will need a couple of parents to volunteer to drive to Waverly. Please let Trisha Weichers know if you would be available to drive. 319-939-7224.

Thank You Fredsville Family Thank you to our Fredsville volunteers who helped work the October pancake breakfast at NewAldaya Lifescapes. Also, thanks to all who donated baked goods for the bake sale or came to eat

pancakes.

The annual breakfast, organized by Auxiliary Board members from each of the 7 founding Lutheran churches uses funds raised to purchase items that benefit the residents of NewAldaya. The proceeds from this year’s breakfast was over $5,000, which included a $1,000 donation from Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and $500 from Thrivent Financial Group. From the proceeds the Auxiliary Board pledged its second donation of $3,000 towards the new Memory Care Unit for Alzheimer and dementia residents. Additional proceeds were used to purchase items to benefit the

needs of both residents and staff.

Thanks to all our Fredsville members who helped make these gifts possible to benefit the residents of NewAldaya. Jane Christensen and Audrey Stefan, Auxiliary Board Members

Fredsville’s Book Club

Fredsville’s book club is currently reading

“14th

Deadly Sin” by James Patterson. The

Book club will not meet in December but on

Monday January 11th

at 10:30 a.m. in the

Gathering Space.

With San Francisco under siege and everyone a suspect, the Women's Murder Club must risk their lives to save the city-and each other. With shocking twists and riveting suspense, this book proves yet again that when it comes to suspense fiction, in the words of Jeffrey Deaver: "nobody does it better" than James Patterson.

Weather reminder: Whenever Dike-New Hartford School

is either canceled or has early dismissal due to weather;

we will cancel activities here at the church.

Don’t forget . . . .

If you don’t see your missing item in the kitchen, check the

“Lost & Found” in the Gathering Space.

Be sure to check the Lost & Found for other missing items!

December 2015 Merry Christmas from LSI

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not

overcome it.” – John 1:5

As Christmas approaches, we give thanks for you! Every day, as a

ministry partner of LSI, you help bring the light of Christ to others.

At LSI, we know many people experiencing deep darkness. We

know adults with disabilities who have no caring family presence in

their lives. We know families in Des Moines who spent twenty years

living in refugee camps and are finally regaining some hope for the

future. We know teens who are aging out of the foster care system

and fear they will never belong to anyone or have a family to love

them.

LSI’s work is Christmas work, shining love, compassion and light in

places of darkness, despair, abuse, neglect, addiction and crisis.

We could not do this important work without you, and we are so

grateful.

Wishing you a blessed and merry Christmas from LSI!

LSI is proud to be an affiliated social ministry organization of the

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Learn more at

Monique Finds a Place for Hope

On a rainy morning, the radiant laughter and smiles of two young sisters fill the room. “My daughters are very energetic,” said their mom Monique, with a tired smile. Monique began partnering with LSI’s HOPES (Healthy Opportunities for Parents to Experience Success) when her oldest daughter was just a couple months old. “I was a first time mom and young. I was so scared I would be the worst mom possible,” Monique said. When parents enroll in HOPES, they are connected with a family support worker who visits them in their home to offer parenting support, track child development and help families achieve their goals. “The people at HOPES are my family. I couldn’t tell you where I’d be without them,” Monique said. Monique was struggling to provide for herself without a high school diploma, adequate transportation or family support. “She was kicked out of her house and has been on her own since

Page 13: PEACEFUL TIDINGS! - Fredsville Lutheran Church€¦ · Confirmation classes will resume February 17th, 2016 Seder Service & Feast March 23rd, 2016 . Larry & Jeanne Guthrie - December

13

she was a teen,” said Linda, an LSI supervisor. “She was forced to grow up really fast. She had to sink or swim, and she chose to swim.” With support from LSI, Monique earned her GED and went immediately into CNA (certified nursing assistant) classes. Today, Monique needs less support than she once did, but LSI is still there to provide a listening ear and guidance. Her family is now happy, healthy and thriving with optimism for the future. “Our futures look very bright. My new goals are to go back to school, work on buying a house, and get my kids into a really good school. Because of LSI, my family will succeed in life.”

Thank you to all the volunteers throughout the year, your time was very much appreciated!
