ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF A FIRST AIDER

As a first aid officer my roles and responsibilities are:

Identify possibly hazards or cause of injuries and report them to the competition manager.

Liaise with relevant personnel to devise appropriate procedures in event of serious

injuries.

To work to prevent and treat injuries.

ACTION PLAN

As a first aid officer there are certain plans I need to ensure the success of the competition.

Things which I plan to do and accomplish are as follows:

My plan as a first aider is to ensure that necessary equipment are organized and in place

before the stand of each race or activity. These include: The first aid kit, stretcher, ice,

rehydration fluid and water, so I can assist the athletes in case of an emergency and or

any injuries.

In case of any serious injuries I will assess the injury and apply treatment then I will seek

assistance from the Mona High School nurse.

As a First Aid Officer I have the responsibility to make my own First Aid kit. It is

important as well for all the members of the medic group to make their own medic kit.

This is so to ensure that all members of the medical team can attend to an athlete with

their own medic kit at the same time.

I plan to educate students about staying injury free. Also members of the medic group

and I will put up posters showing athletes and others to stay injury free for example

wearing the right sports gear.

CONTINGENCY PLAN

As a First Aid Officer I planned to take certain action before the event begin in order for it to be

successful. In case of situation beyond my control I plan to address these problems:

In case of injury: Injuries mostly happen in sporting competition, I plan to address these

problems in many ways depending on the type of injury. In case where an athlete is

seriously injured, for example; if the athlete bone slips out, I will ask for assistance from

an individual in authority who will assist me by taking the injured person to the nearest

hospital, which is the University of the West Indies, Mona. Where minor injuries are

concerned for example cramps, I will treat these by applying mineral ice, cold spray etc

to the affected area.

In case of absence: If a member of the First Aid Officer that was assigned to do a

particular task is absent, the other member will be assigned to that task for us to achieve

our goals as a group.

In case of rain: Rain occurs naturally and we need to be prepared for this occurrence. In

addition a shelter will be provided to accommodate the first aiders, injured persons, as

well as the necessary equipments.

MY REFLECTION

Sports day was a great experience for me. This experience exposed me to do various things that I could not do. During the sports day I had many challenges with my group. I was a part of the First-aid-officer group. The group was working together but the challenges we had was to lift the persons off the field when they got injured and because they were heavy it cause a problem to lift them ourselves, therefore I had to seek assistance from some of the males. Another problem was when we were under the first aid tent and other people would come under the tent and they weren’t suppose to be there, I would tell them to go away but they wouldn’t listen so I had to call the chief. This also teaches me how to treat injured persons, and showed me how great it is to work in a group.

Being a part of the First Aid group teaches me how to be very alert and responsible in taking on each task. But on the other hand it can be rough attending to an injured athlete.
