WISE, which is a Mount Road-based NGO made up of five women from Port Elizabeth townships, also seeks to promote the use of solar-powered appliances to meet the diverse needs for electricity such as charging laptops, computers, radios and household lighting. An American Solar Energy Distributor, Ri- chard Silcock, recently donated solar pow- ered lights to WISE to distribute to needy chil- dren in New Brighton and KwaNobuhle town- ships. According to Magwa, the solar energy lights provides light for almost 16 hours when fully charged. He believes that if the majority of people used solar energy, the country wouldn’t be faced with the on-going problem of power failure. “While the project was started to assist chil- dren better their grades, we soon realised there is a great need for families, especially those in underdeveloped areas like shacks, to use this cheap but safe technology,” Magwa told PE Express Indaba, adding that he be- lieved there were many more electrical appli- ances and cellphones among shack-dwellers than many people imagined. He added, “given a chance, we could intro- duce a system of assisting needy communities or those who want to save money, by bringing light using cheap and appropriate technolo- gies. This method could contribute signifi- cantly through the off grid electricity supply to the communities.” He said other people could take part in the programme by buying solar lamps for the ben- efit of needy children who have to study at night without light. WHILE most of PE’s learners begin their sum-mer holidays this week, 80 learners from 33schools across Nelson Mandela Bay are attend-ing a three-dayannual summit tohelp findprac-tical solutions for safety and crime preventionin their communities.

Likemost provinces inSouthAfrica, theEast-ernCape is battlingwithhigh rates of crimeandviolence. One of the major challenges faced byyoung people in the Metro is the high youth un-employmentrateandpoverty,whichleadstotheattraction of youth to a life of crime.

The Youth for Safer Communities (YSC)project is an initiative, which began in 2012,through collaboration between MasifundeLearnerDevelopmentandGIZ.Theprojectaimsto encourage young people to recognise the rolethat they can play in the creation of communitysafety.

The focus of this year’s Youth For Safer Com-munitiessummit is tocomeupwithpractical so-lutions to the challenges which the MandelaBay’s Municipal Community Safety Forum(CSF) has come across. The school delegates arelooking at the CSF’s challenges, the major caus-es of crime and violence in Nelson Mandela Bayanddiscusswhattheyouthcoulddotohelpsolve

these challenges. The YSC schools will then puttogether a plan of action for 2015 and present iton the last day of the Summit.

One of the participants from Walmer HighSchool, 16-year-old Sanelisiwe Dick said she hasbeen absorbing all the information she is learn-ing from the programme like a sponge and shewill then in turn impart the information tootherlearners at her school.

Yonela Maposa from Newell High School saidthe informationhe is gaining at the summitwillalso help improve the lives of his peers at schooland the community.

“Learning about the social ills such as crimeandhowweas theyouthcanhelpalleviate these

a very crucial stage of their lives so they growup with the know-how and are also able to comeupwith theirownideasand functionality tobestsuit their communities,” said Uren.

Linda Zali from Masifunde Learner Develop-ment said the young delegates would also be en-couraged to act as local heroes next year. “ Theymust work at becoming change makers in theirschools and in turn in their communities,” saidZali.

Zali said when the year ended in 2015 theywouldhave another summit to discuss and eval-uate each other on the different changes theyhad made individually in their communitiesand at school as change maker heroes.

“The aim of Youth For Safer Communities isfor learners to become change-makers (activerole models) inspiring change within their com-munities by initiating extra-curricular projectsand activities such as drama, debating and em-powerment through mentors and peer helpers. The hope is that these initiatives will give ouryouth something constructive, meaningful andpositive to do with their time, thereby keepingthem off the streets and helping reduce the rateof crime in their communities.” said Zali.

THEnecessarybudgetmustbe“madeavailablefor the implementation of the Metro PolicyService,” Mayor Ben Fihla says in a report toCouncil which meets tomorrow (Thursday).

No indication of the funding required, bothin terms of start-up and operational costs, iscontained in the report, which is headed“Progress Report on the Implementation of theNelsonMandela BayMetropolitan Police Serv-ice”.

ChiefOperatingOfficerMzwakeClaytold theBudget and Treasury Committee earlier thisyear that there was no funding for the metropolice in the 2014/15 Budget. He pointed out that as a result, no costs could

be incurred “as no budget exists for the addi-tional costs,” adding that the matter would bedealt with when the Adjustments Budget waspresented to Council.Clay said the only way in which the metro

policecouldbe fundedotherwise, was if savingswere identified in theSafetyandSecurityBudg-et.

In his report to Council, the Mayor also rec-ommends that Executive Director: CorporateServicesModNdoyana “issue a letter authoris-ing the Chief of the Metro Police Pinkie Math-abathe to assume command and control of theTraffic and Licensing and Security Services”.In addition, the mayor recommends that

Safety and Security Executive Director ShaneBrown consults Ndoyana “in respect of lines ofreporting for the Director: Traffic Services andActing Director: Security Services as per theMetro Police Structure”.Further, theMayor has resolved that Ndoya-

na should “avail dedicatedpersonnel to finalisethe amalgamationprocess” of the various partsof the Safety and Security Directorate such astheTraffic andLicensingandSecurityServicesDivisions. This will involve job evaluation, structure,

placement and job descriptions for the munici-pal police before the formal launch takes place.Inaddition, theMayor saysNdoyanamustal-

“MY father is my role-model. He was a trueman who always told me to stand up whenI fall and wipe my tears. These words, hesaid, are thewordsyoumust rememberanduse when you’re older and faced with life’schallenges...”

These are some of the words that cap-tured the emotions of judges in the “Men ofHonour” competition by DOXA, Youth Ap-prentice and Coaching, an NGO that seeksto findmen of honour in theNelsonMande-la Bay townships. In the spirit of celebrating the Interna-

tional Day for Men on November 19, DOXAasked school children to write a 200 wordessay about men they thought deserved tobehonouredandcelebrated for their leader-ship qualities and exemplary behaviour intheir communities.

According to DOXA Project ManagerThembani Gqiba, this was celebrated be-

cause, despite the problems of women andchild abuse by men - which must be foughtagainst on all fronts – “the world is upheldby the veracity of good men: they make theearth wholesome. They who lived amongthem found life glad and nutritious,” hesaid, quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson.Lwanele Matshanga’s essay about his

late fater and many others proved that inour townships therearegood fathers,broth-ers, uncles and nephews.“These are real men, who are their son’s

first heroes and daughter’s first love.Wehave in our communities ordinary peoplethat do extra-ordinary things. Those wereacknowleged and rewarded,” said DOXA’sNolwazi Adams.“Doxa’s awards will surely play a huge

role in restoring the honour and the dignityback to men,” said Gqiba. The department of Social Development’s

Monde Danster said his department sup-ported such initiatives which were aimedat restoring Ubuntu back to the people.

THE 2014 HeroesMarathon, a Tran-skei flagship event which will takeplace inMthatha on Tuesday 16 December, was launched at the Boardwalk ICClast Thursday.

The event, according to MEC forSport, Recreation, Arts and Cul-ture Pemmy Majodina was startedin 1999 in the former Transkei.

“The event is used to commemo-rate heroes and heroines comingfrom the Eastern Cape, The Homeof Legends and is celebrated on theDay of Reconciliation,” said Majo-dina during the launch.

Explaining why the event waslaunched in Port Elizabeth in Nel-son Mandela Bay whereas it wastaking place inMthatha in the KingSabatha Dalindyebo Municipality, the MEC retorted, “We are oneprovince. This is not a Transkeibut an Eastern Cape event which isopen not only to Eastern Cape-based athletes but to others fromacross the country and includingSADC countries like Lesotho, Bot-swana and Malawi.”

Furthermore, according to Majo-dina, they wanted to dispel themyth that government did notsponsor events of such magnitudetaking place in the Transkei andthat road running was not only forurban areas.

The DSRAC sponsored R2 mil-lion HeroesMarathonwas aimed atattracting a mixture of tourists tothe province as it was linked to the

Liberation Route which touchesbase at Qunu where former StatePresident and liberation strugglehero, Nelson Mandela’s world her-itage burial place is, said Majodi-na, adding that this was for the firsttime that the race takes placewhilst Madiba is not there.

“Madiba used to support thismarathon hence we have notchanged its start in Qunu,” saidMajodina, adding that they wereencouraging mass participationwith this sport event as sport wasa catalyst for nation building andsocial cohesion.

She said the event which pro-motes a healthy life-style will callfor a generational mix involvingthe youth, the veterans, the mas-ters and grand masters also takingpart.

“There is something exciting forthe athletes as well,” said MECMa-jodina about the huge prizes on of-fer which will be equal betweenmen and women: R90 000 for menand women who come first, R30 000for coming second and R20 000 forthird position in the 42,2 km.

“But also, the Heroes Marathonwill be a family event with fantas-tic and jam- packed with with excit-ing entertainment.

The organisers expected 2000participants in the 42,2 km, 10 kmand the 5km races this year com-pared to the 1000 that registeredlast year.

The 5km fun run was describedas a family event which will en-courage finishing the race ratherthan winning it.
