Five containers were completely renovated, converted and subdivided to provide houses for 10 destitute families, the sick and the elderly. A sixth unit was also prepared as a multi-purpose facility for community meetings, classroom for the children and a skills development centre. The containers were installed in December, and gave the new residents a formal dwelling in the so-called ‘Blue Village’. This represented a life-changing upgrade from the dilapidated make-shift shacks they pre- viously called home. Apart from the housing units, the team from the Struandale Engine Plant also installed two mobile toilets, providing essential ablutions in an area that has to make do without basic servi- ces such as sanitation. A handful of communal taps service the thousands of people living in the informal settlement. The new containers joined the five existing units that were installed in 2014 as part of Ford’s annual Global Week of Caring. This gave the first 10 families a safe, comfortable and weather- proof environment that guaranteed dramatical- ly improved living conditions - particularly in the cold and wet winter months. “We have had an incredible response and sup- port from around the world for the Vastrap con- tainer housing project that we started in 2014, and are delighted to launch this second phase that makes it possible to accommodate and im- prove the living conditions of 20 families in to- tal,” said Hyron Muniz, Production Manager at the Ford Struandale Engine Plant and the project lead. A GROUP of irate Malabar residents are com-plaining about the Moregrove quarry road be-ing closed to the public.
Theseresidentsused todrive throughthepri-vate road that leads into theMoregrovequarry, which is owned by Lafarge, as a shortcut fromMalabar to their workplace and variousschools, especially in the Newton Park area.Rafeeq Moosagie, who used the quarry road
daily as a shortcut to work, has put together apetition signed by about 80 residents who livenear the Moregrove quarry and would like theroad to be opened to the public.“It is an absolute disgrace to have the quarry
closed to the public. It’s the quarry trucks thatmess up our roads and the least they can do isopen the roads to the public.“I used the (quarry) road every single day
during theweek. I live inMalabar, mybusinessis inNewtonPark andmychild goes toNewtonPark Pre-primary so it’s an inconvenience notto have that road open,” he said.Ibrahim Asmal, who is also angry about the
quarry road closure, said, “I think they shouldbe more considerate. I work in Newton Park; Ineed touse thequarryduring theweekbecauseit’s an inconvenience to drive right aroundSchauderville just to get to work,” he said.“Many years back, they gave out discs for
Malabar residents to use the quarry and that
was very convenient. I understand that it is aprivate road which is why I am willing to payto use that road,” he said.Imran Moosagie, who used to drive through
the quarry daily, said the quarry has beenclosed since last year.“I used the quarry to take my daughter from
our home in Malabar, to school at MoregrovePrimary. It was such an inconvenience to findan alternative road,” he said.He added that he wanted to use the quarry
road for safety reasons too. “Thequarry is saferthan going through Schauderville. I remembercoming from Schauderville towards Malabarand being caught in the crossfire of a shootingwith gangsters.”Lafarge Communications and Public Affairs
manager, Unathi Batyashe-Fillis, said the deci-sion to close the quarry road was taken follow-ing a series of road traffic violations whichposed a safety risk tomotorists. She added thatthe company would be held liable should therebe a serious accident on their roads.“The company noticed with concern the in-
creasingamountof incidentson theroadwhichresulted in a fewnearmisses including an acci-dent.Given that the companyprioritiseshealthand safety, we believe that the safety of ourmo-torists far outweighs the inconvenience thathas now been caused by the closure.”“The decision was taken at executive level
followingpriornotice to the roadusers,”Batya-she-Fillis said.

A REPORT in the PE Express about a waterleak and the intervention of acting NelsonMandela Bay city manager Johann Mettlerled to repairs being carried out the same daythat the report appeared in the newspaper.
This happened much to the surprise of Eu-geneWeitz, theCharlo residentwhohadbeenbattling sinceOctober for thewater and sani-tation department to attend to the leak be-tween Harold, Angela and Walter roads inCharlo.Weitz said he had spotted the water leak
on October 5 when he took his dogs for awalk, but thinking it had already been re-ported, he had taken no action.“On October 18 I noticed that the leak had
not been repaired and I immediately report-ed it to the municipality. On November 1, Ionce again reported the leak to the munici-
pality, but they refused to give me anotherreference number as I had already reportedit.”According to his estimates, the leak could
have caused a loss of water amounting toR66 500.Mettler said yesterday he had intervened
in the matter, but there had already been ameeting during which he had asked the met-ro’s executive management to lift the level ofservice delivery.“It was nice that everything fell into place
on the same day that the article about MrWeitz’s battle to have the leak repaired ap-peared in the newspaper,” he said.Weitz said he was very happy that the leak
had been repaired andhewanted to thank ev-erybody involved in getting themunicipalityto react eventually.“It is clear that the media involvement
brought about the immediate reaction,” hesaid.

FOURTEEN years ago a group ofmothers-to-be joined an antenatalclass to get some tips and advice onthe coming birth of their babiesand how to cope thereafter.
One of the most important thingsHelen Ward taught them at her an-tenatal class was that forming asupport group (or baby club) ofmothers was key.
The mothers (and fathers) start-ed getting together on a regular ba-sis and in this way a strong bondwas created between them, joiningeach other for birthday parties,Christmas parties and regular
mothers only coffee meets. In 2009 before going off to grade
1 most of the group came togetherfor a photo of the kids in their vari-ous school uniforms and they de-cided to do it again before the kidswent to high school.
Even though the group doesn’tmeet as often as they used to dueto their schedules becoming busi-er the older they get, it wasn’t toodifficult getting everybody togeth-er at the same venue as in 2009again.
One of those on the primaryschool photo has moved awaysince but the two who couldn’tmake it that day were there for theoccasion this time around.

One of the oldest living members is BuckCoates, who is in his 90s and lives in Port Eliz-abeth. He played hooker and was President ofSwifts for a number of years.
“During 1975, Buck managed quite an excit-ing rugby tour to the then Rhodesia. We allflew up and won four of our five games againstthe neighbouring country. We actually touredevery second year.”
There was the “Sinner Side” and the “Ou-man-span” with excellent players like Spring-boks FR Myburgh and Carel Fourie.
The memorial service will be held on Sun-day, February 7th, at 11:15 for 11:30 at St Ka-tharine’s Church. Afterwards there will be agathering in the parish hall for tea and cake.
Following these proceedings, fires will belit at the Uitenhage Cricket Club (opposite Uit-enhage Indoor Sports Centre) for a bring-and-braai and reunion.
All old Swifts members, supporters andtheir families are welcome to attend. Attend-ance should be confirmed for catering purpos-es. For more info contact Cicil Hayward 041922 7936; Fred Minty 072 515 8646; Dirk Alber-tyn 041 966 1680 or John Millson 041 583 1773.– HEILIE COMBRINCK
“BIRDIES” from across the country will onceagain flock to Uitenhage at the beginning ofFebruary to attend the Swifts Rugby Club’sannual reunion and memorial service.
Last year’s event was a huge success withnearly 100 guests and some members travel-ling from as far as Cape Town and East Lon-don to attend.
According to one of the organisers, CecilHayward, they hope this year will be even amore jubilant gathering, as it is the 125th an-nual celebration of a sports club which not on-ly was the heart and soul of Uitenhage, but aone-of-a-kind when it comes to its rich histo-ry.
“Swifts is the only rugby club in South Afri-ca, which was founded by a Reverend andwhere many a professional rugby playerstarted his career,” said Hayward.
Reverend Charles Jecks of St Katharine’sAnglican Church in Market Street, Uiten-hage, during 1890 selected a team of young-sters from the church choir and entered themin a local rugby league. At first they wereknown as the St Katherine’s choir rugbyteam, but by 1891 it was officially named theSwifts Rugby and Football Club.

THERE’S a little girl down the road, five ormaybe six, who’s filled with wrath these days.Whenever she passes a neighbour as she ped-als her tiny bike around the gated communitywhere her family lives, she stops to questionthem. “So what d’you think now?”
She literally shrieks: “Well, I told you so!Didn’t I? That’ll teach them to mess with ourQuinnie!?”
What’s it all about? Ask her that and she’llfix you with those piercing blue eyes and givea cheeky shake of her curly blonde hair.
“Quinton! Quinton de Kock, of course. I said
they were mad to drop him. So he showedthem – and how he did! Top scorer for the Pro-teas against England. One-twenty-nine notout! With his new little moustache and all –really yummy don’t you think?”
What she’s on about is what happened lastweek at the Centurion cricket ground, wherethe Proteas are playing England in the last ofthe four Test series. But don’t get her startedor she’ll give you the whole – perhaps unprint-able – history about how he was dropped notonce but twice. “I mean, are they crazy?”
Y
the controversy over who should take over thecoaching of the Springboks now that HeynekeMeyer has decided he wants no more of it.
At first it looked set for the former Stormerscoach, Allister Coetzee, to take over as theBoks’ new boss, even though he is presentlycontracted with the Kobelco Steelers in Ja-pan.
It is now rumoured, however, that he maynot be all that keen to break away from hisJapanese commitment.
Indeed, so strong has this rumour become, that a new candidate in the form of RassieErasmus is now being touted to take over theSpringbok hot seat.
Should Coetzee back off, Erasmus, who isSARU’s General Manager of Rugby, mighttake over at least on a temporary basis. Thiswould give SARU enough time to find a per-manent replacement. And that’s not all. Somedark horses are also being mentioned as can-didates for the job – among them Lions coachJohan Ackermann and the former All Blacksboss, John Plumtree. SARU president, OregonHoskins, said at the weekend: “A foreigner isan option that should not be overlooked.” Soyou never can tell.
And talk about getting your ducks in a row. . . now poor AB gets a pair – what’s this worldcoming to?

Whatwill happennext –whoknows?
ou have to forgive her. Her father’s a retiredfarmer and he always calls a spade a “bloodyshovel”. But there’s no stopping her now asshe bursts out with: “Like I said are they cra-zy or something? First they drop him – eventhough he’s easily the best wickie they got.
Then there’s some cock-and-bull story(that’s her dad’s influence) about Quinniewalking with his dog and taking a real crop-per of a fall. Did the dog push him over orwhat? Anyway he was injured, so they lefthim out again!”
Then pedals away, muttering blue mur-der. “Next they’ll be dropping poor old Kagi-so Rabada for taking seven wickets and all.Bloody selectors!”
You have to wonder what she’ll have to saywith the new rugby season coming up and

MORE than 500 participants from all over thecountry are expected to take part in one of SouthAfrica’s leading off-road triathlons, the Fed-health XTERRA, which will make its debut inNelson Mandela Bay this Friday, 29 until Sun-day, 31 January.
The full triathlon takes place on Saturdaycomprising a 1.5km ocean swim, 28km moun-tain bike and 12km trail run.
The triathlon will be held at Kings Beach andwill rely on the Kings Beach Surf LifesavingClub to ensure the water safety of all partici-pants over the weekend.
Paul Lynch, Vice Chairman of Kings BeachSurf Lifesaving Club, said that hosting the Fed-
health XTERRA, cements the Bay as a “fantasticcity for iconic events.”
“Our qualified lifesavers will be in the watermonitoring the competitors. We will also makeuse of boats as an additional safety option,”Lynch said.
Theeventprovidesadrenalinerushing funforthe whole family, with the Fedhealth XTERRAKids event taking place on Friday.
There will also be a Fedhealth XTERRA Litecomprising a 400m swim, 12km mountain bikeand 6km trail run for those who want to partici-pate in a less strenuous challenge.
Participants can enter individually or as partof a team of three, where one participant willswim, one will ride the mountain bike route andthe other will participate in the trail run.
Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism CEO, Mandlak-
azi Skefile, said the Bay is ideal for any sportsenthusiast and it is a privilege to become a hostcity for the Fedhealth XTERRA event that is rec-ognised as South Africa’s premier off-road tri-athlon.
“Many national sporting heroes have startedtheir careers or found ideal training groundshere and the city is fast becoming a lifestyle des-tination of choice.”
“Through hosting iconic flagship events thedestination is able to gain an increase in sportstourism while having a global and national plat-form to showcase the destination’s world-classfacilities and attractions,” Skefile said.
Last year’s Fedhealth XTERRA winner, Stu-art Marais (30), who will be taking part in thisweek’s triathlon, said he is excited about theevent, especially since he is originally from Port
Elizabeth.Carla van Huyssteen (31) from Pietermaritz-
burg, who is one of the participants for the fulltriathlon, said she is looking forward to being inPort Elizabeth.
“I don’t know what to expect because it’s thefirstXTERRAinPEbutwe’reexcitedtoseewhatPE has to offer.”

AS the 2016 Formula 1 season draws evercloser the most important parts are start-ing to fall into place. Several teams, includ-ing Ferrari and McLaren, have passed thecrucial first steps towards what they hopewill be a memorable season of racing.Of course, it wouldn’t be F1 if a million
other issues and topics weren’t simultane-ously swirling around the sport. As tyresand power units dominate the talkingpoints the biggest issue with F1 has beenabout how to improve the show. Some clever people in suits came to the
conclusion that re-introducing the conceptof refuelling would do the trick. However, this idea has yet again been shot down. The FIA president, Jean Todt, recently
confirmed that the issue would come underdiscussion at a meeting in Geneva. However, as in 2015, the possibility of
bringing back refuelling was dismissed bythe Strategy Group and the F1 Commission.
that all critical areas of a Formula 1 carpass a standardised crash test before it isallowed to be officially entered into any of-ficial FIA race.Reports are that the Italian team needed
several attempts at passing the test becausethey sampled more than one nose for their2016 challenger. The Ferrari team’s 2016 car is already re-
ported to be quite different from its 2015predecessor and is rumoured to be intro-ducing a short nose concept for the new sea-son. The new nose isn’t somuch a reproduc-tion fromwhat we saw on other cars in 2015but more a mixture between the noseconesported by Mercedes and Toro Rosso.McLaren too has passed a mandatory
crash test for the front-end of its MP4-31.The Woking-based team reportedly com-pleted and passed a dynamic test of thefront of their 2016 car.The nosecone of the McLaren is ru-
moured to be similar in style to what the
Red Bull Racing team ran in 2015. However, the longer nose as seen on the 2015McLarenhas not been ruled out as a viable option.Rumours have also emerged that the
team has overcome its power unit deficien-cy. Honda, who struggled throughout the2015 season, is alleged to have solved theissues surrounding its energy recoverysystem. Some put the rumoured gains that have
been made by the Japanese manufacturerin the region in 223 horsepower. If it is the case the Honda engine should
be on par with that of Ferrari and Mer-cedes. However, it still doesn’t answer thequestion of the woeful reliability the teamendured throughout their 2015 campaign. As the first test of the season draws closer
you’d have to expect that rumours of suchsignificant gains will remain pure specula-tion until the team and its drivers can getout on track and prove it. If it is this casethen F1 is in for one cracking season.

The general feeling from the meetings wasthat the cost of re-introducing this aspectto the sport would be too costly. Williamstechnical director told Autosport that thecosts of bringing it back into the sportwould be “significant.”“Freight costs for shipping equipment is
£175 000 and it’s probably £200 000 - 250 000to buy and service the kit in the first yearand ongoing cost of servicing it,” he said.“There is also one dedicated salaried per-son for looking after it so the costs are verysignificant.”It leaves the focus, at least from the out-
side, squarely on what the teams are pre-paring for 2016. The good news is that Fer-rari’s car is well on course to make its de-but in February after passing a mandatoryFIA crash test. The safety regulations of the FIA dictate
