Port Elizabeth: 041 363 0165, 17thQuarter,WilliamMoffet Drive - OPENON SUNDAYS!
IN the edition of February 3, in the article“Piece of British royalty found in Lorrainehome,” the PE Express incorrectly report-ed that Mario Luiters found the album in
his home in Lorraine. He in fact found it in his previous home,
which was situated in Mount Croix. We un-reservedly apologise for the error.
Correction: ‘Piece of British royaltyfound in Lorraine home’ THURSDAY February 4 marked another mile-
stone in the history for Media 24, with the firstpublication of their brand-new free local news-paper, the Queenstown Express.
Making this even more significant is the factthat the media house is investing in a print edi-tion at a time when print media is increasinglyunder pressure globally.
“This is testimony to the popularity and suc-cess of the Express brand of local newspapers, which has been a favourite read in people’shomes since the first edition of Port ElizabethExpress was published in November 1983 –more than 32 years ago,” said Bettie Giliomee, regional editor of EP Media and editor ofQueenstown Express.Queenstown Express will be distributed to
20 000 homes in Queenstown every Thursday. The launch of the newspaper was celebrat-
ed at a special function at the Heritage GuestHouse in Queenstown on Wednesday, Febru-ary 3. The event was attended by key role-players in the Queenstown community.
Staff of the paper took to the town’s streetson the launch day to hand out newspapers.Acakecuttingceremonywasheld inthecentreof town and was attended by the town’s formeracting mayor and portfolio head of the techni-cal services department, Mzolisi Gwantshu.
The newspaper has a staff of four, two report-ers and two advertising representatives, whoare based at the newspaper’s offices in Queens-town. Production and printing of the Queens-town Express is done in Port Elizabeth.
EP Media is part of Media 24 andpublishes 7 local newspapers throughout theEastern Cape. A total of 310 000 free copies ofExpress newspapers, i.e. Port Elizabeth Ex-press, Express Indaba, Kouga Express, UDNews, Mthatha Express, Isolomzi Express andUvoLwethu Express, are distributed everyweek, door to door.

There has also been a greater in-crease in “occasional” students –those who have registered for indi-viduals modules, especially from in-ternational students. The Faculty of Health Sciences is
showing the greatest percentage in-crease in student numbers in linewith the University’s quest of ex-panding its programme offerings tobecome part of the solution to thepresent health challenges facing thecountry.A final tally of student numbers
will only be available once late regis-tration has been completed. The lat-ter is undertaken directly with thedifferent faculty administrators.
Honours students to benefit fromfundraising climbNMMU Honours students are set
to benefit from funds raised by itsVice-Chancellor, Prof DerrickSwartz, through the #climb4nmmucampaign he undertook last year.As part of the University’s com-
mitment to broadening access tohigher education, the R1.1m raisedon the back of Prof Swartz’s ascent
of Mount Fuji in August 2015 will goto academically-deserving but fi-nancially-needy postgraduate stu-dents.Honours studies, a critical bridge
into senior postgraduate degreestudy programmes, are currentlythe least funded qualification cate-gory at NMMU.The Summit Scholarship is also
part of a bigger NMMU initiative toencourage students not only to fur-ther their studies after completingtheir initial degree, but also to growpostgraduate numbers and to con-tribute to the growth the next gener-ation of academics.Graduates who wish to study fur-
ther and who meet the criteria areencouraged to apply for the gener-ous scholarship. As a recipient of bursary funding
himself Prof Swartzwell appreciatesthe importance of investing in de-serving students.“I was supported through the gen-
erosity of people I did not know.Nowit is my turn to encourage fundingsupport so as to ensure that the cur-rent and next generations also suc-ceed,” says Prof Swartz, who galva-nized staff, students and various
companies to dig deep into theirpockets to support the#climb4nmmu campaign.Prof Swartz also highlighted the
need to retain hardworking studentsby exposing them to the long-termbenefits of postgraduate studies. Many well performing students areoften compelled to return home oncethey have obtained their undergrad-uate qualification because of a lackof funding for studying further, orbecause of pressures to earn moneyso they support and enable brothers, sisters and relatives to also study.Prospective bursary recipients for
the VC’s Summit Scholarship mustmeet the following criteria:
) Be enrolled for a full-time hon-ours qualification
) Be financially-needy) Be academically-deserving (at-
tain a minimum average of 60%)) Have proof of co-curricular ac-
tivities at undergraduate levelsTo apply, students should visit the
Research Capacity Development Of-fice, Room 1314, Main Building,South Campus.A screening panel will select the
recipients.Applications close on 18 February.

Currently Soul Candi Institute of Music isthe only place that offers a course that fo-cuses on modern music production meth-ods, coupled with cutting edge technology-based training where the focus is on practi-cal music composition.
Through honouring the immense poten-tial in music as an art form, Soul Candi of-fers a vibrant and energetic learning envi-ronment that stands at the forefront ofmodern approaches to music production.
Soul Candi’s success record in developingyoungmusic talents is largely due to the piv-otal role played by Ryan Murgatroyd – SoulCandi’s course developer.
Murgatroyd rose to global prominencewhen his release Funk Country became BBC1Radio’s “essential new tune” on the legend-ary Pete Tong show. Besides his involvementwith Soul Candi, Murgatroyd’s passion formusic, and passing that knowledge on toothers, also led him to create inspirationalcurriculum content.Inspired by Murgatroyd’s devotion to the
evolution of music, and as Soul Candi’scourse developer, prospective students canexpect a high tech learning environmentthat offers students the kind of theory andpractical based tuition that allows for ahands-on experience.

entrepreneurial spirit it is essential to havea working knowledge of the contractuallandscape and framework in the music in-dustry.Too many budding artists with loads of
talent are taken for a ride because of a lackof knowledge of copyright law, music rightsand licensing. It is important to understandthe roles of artists, producers, publishingcompanies, managers, agents, promotersand attorneys. The Music Business course will prepare

Despite the hard work they werefriendly and polite and when thingswere under control still entertained myson for a photograph.

Looking for greener pastures, my family and I moved to South Africa in 2008. It was daunting, but the support of my loving wife,Bernice, made it easier. After working in various sectors of the hardware industry, I gained the knowledge needed to pursue myown business once more.
I had the knowledge, but Nedbank had the belief, expertise and products to make it all happen. It all started with TerenceMarshall, my Relationship Banker, who took the time to listen and understand my needs. Together with him and Nedbank’ssmall business startup offer, my business, Insucon, has grown twofold, and in the near future we plan to open branches inGauteng, East London and eventually Cape Town.

DISSIMILAR IN almost every way but one– and that’s a sportsman of a certain kind, and even then not quite the same. We’retalking here about JohnnyWaite and youngQuinton de Kock, generations apart but onthe cricket field very much alike.
One tall and elegant in every way – that’sWaite - the otherDeKock is just 23 and thesedays very much in the here and now.Waite, tall and elegant, was a classy
Springbok batsman and a wicket-keeperout of the top drawer. Young De Kock is get-ting there fast in both disciplines – behindthe stumps and in front of them as well.De Kock, sporting a ragged moustache
these days, is rapidly developing in bothcricketing arts. While the first-named wasconventionally a right-handed batsman, DeKock is a “leftie”. But as first-class cricket-ers they are otherwise as similar as peas ina pod.Coming back after an injury –whilewalk-
ing his dogs – having earlier been droppedfrom the elite SouthAfrican squad, DeKockshowed in the Proteas’ first ODI against En-gland in Bloemfontein, with an almostfaultless 138, all the ability to follow in thefootsteps of the pre-eminent Waite, theSpringbok ‘keeper and batsman of yester-year.Had it not been for the rain that pelted
down bringing an end to De Kock’s unde-feated innings who knows what might havehappened with the youngster in such fineform, even going to the extent of “stealing”the bowling whenever he was able.
ThatwasDeKock in great form at theMan-gaung Oval in Bloemfontein and in his part-nership with Faf du Plessis was ahead of therequired run-rate to reach 400 and snatch thefirst ODI from England’s clutches. The Proteas youngster’s form in one-day
internationals is little short of astounding –five centuries in no fewer than 14 innings of50 or more. He is a match-winner par excel-lence.But one wonders if it’s altogether wise for
the youngster to keep opening the innings inTests with Hashim Amla.It would seem that a position somewhere
near the middle of the order would be betterfor De Kock and his ability to go after thebowling in a manner that has a big “let’s winthis” message stamped all over it!Briefly to rugby where the Sharks, after a
bright start against Toulon in France – amore or less second-string team by the way– almost threw the game away.Indeed, the 29-21 win was far from convin-
cing. Bad news for the KwaZulu-Natal visi-tors was captain Pat Lambie’s departurefrom the field with a shoulder injury towhere the collarbone fits into the claviclejoint. His collarbone has popped out of that joint
and the recovery for this type of injury va-ries. Not many players require surgery. Some are back in action in three weeks,
others three months. Lambie’s injury seemsto be of the “three-weeks’ variety”.Presently the Sharks management are
hopeful that at the most recovery will takeno more than 21 days.
