Purpose of a CAD Connector

• Represent CAD files, CAD structure, and Bills of

Materials in Aras Innovator based on the

modelled CAD

• Keep all of that data and relationships in sync

• Vault the CAD files

• All CAD files are managed in Aras Innovator as

CAD Documents

• CAD items have a Classification property to

classify the type of CAD item

▫ Assemblies in the Assembly Model class

▫ Parts in the Part Model class

▫ Drawings in the Drawing class

• The Update BOM process uses the CAD Document structure as a template to

create or update the BOM structure

• This process helps to automate BOM changes, for those portions of the BOM which

resemble the CAD structure

• Some Part BOM components may be added manually, since they are not modeled in CAD.

Numbering and Properties

Page 13: PDM Process Considerations for CAD - aras.com

• Every item in Aras Innovator gets a number

▫ Document Number

▫ Part Number

• How does your organization think of them?

▫ Same?

▫ Different?

Numbering

Page 14: PDM Process Considerations for CAD - aras.com

• Various support for same and different

numbering

• Numbers can come from

▫ Aras Innovator sequence

▫ Manually typed in

▫ Mapped from custom properties

▫ Generated from custom business logic

Considerations

• What is it?

▫ Communication between the Connector and

Aras Innovator to exchange property values

to/from CAD files and Innovator items

▫ All of the connectors support property mapping

Property Mapping

Mapping of Description

Page 19: PDM Process Considerations for CAD - aras.com

• Single point of data entry

• Reuse of entered data

• Automatically fill out properties in Aras Innovator

with data entered in a file’s custom properties

• Automatically fill out a file’s custom properties

with data entered in Aras Innovator

Property Mapping

• Mapping direction

▫ CAD File Aras Innovator Item

▫ Aras Innovator Item CAD File

• Where should the user perform the data entry?

▫ Consider where it is easiest for the user to do data

entry

Configuring Property Mapping

Page 21: PDM Process Considerations for CAD - aras.com

• Only map what is needed to be mapped.

• Sources of mapped data▫ Summary properties

▫ Custom properties

▫ Configuration specific properties

▫ File name

▫ CAD item (model / drawing) properties

• What can’t be mapped examples▫ System controlled properties: Created By / State

▫ Revision (typically)

Configuring Property Mapping

Page 22: PDM Process Considerations for CAD - aras.com

• Property data types▫ Lists / filtered lists: value versus label

▫ Item references: guid

▫ Checkboxes: 1/0 versus true/false

• Start Models with custom properties defined

• CAD application’s custom property manager

• Taking advantage of Aras Innovatorform automation / customizations

• Partner specific

Other Mapping Considerations

Page 23: PDM Process Considerations for CAD - aras.com

• A PLM/PDM environment has less dependency on file names compared to managing in folders.▫ Use Aras Innovator and its searching ability to find

the record you are looking for, not file and folder names.

• If the file name is shown in the CAD application’s tree, then file name may still be important.

• Connectors can be configured to rename or not rename a CAD files.

File Naming

• You’ll need to decide if viewables are needed

• Aras Innovator can create 3D pdfs of the models

▫ Conversion Server

▫ Server side

▫ Independent of Partner and CAD

• Connectors are responsible for creating 2D

viewables.

▫ Client side

Viewables

Page 25: PDM Process Considerations for CAD - aras.com

• Typical 2D viewable is a PDF

• Connectors may be configured to create 2D

viewables in other formats

▫ JT

▫ JPG

▫ eDrawing (for SolidWorks)

▫ Etc

• Connectors may be configured to create

thumbnails

• Express ECO

▫ Impact Matrix for where used analysis of

Aras Innovator Parts

▫ Express DCO for CAD Items

• Simple ECO / ECN

▫ Parts and CAD items on the same change

▫ CMII Wizard for where used analysis

• Migration methodology

• Source of property values▫ Custom properties

▫ File names

▫ ERP

• A custom properties consistent?

• Initial revision value

• Are the file references resolvable?
