Winter 2012 | Park District of Highland Park 3

Long before the first snow falls, the Park District of Highland Park staff is preparing a wide array of programs and activities that are sure to heat up the fun this winter.

Even in the coldest months, staying active is easy when you have so many choices.

Peaceful, snow-covered wooded trails await for great cross-country skiing at Heller Nature Center – and rental equipment is available onsite. For outdoor skating and hockey, visit the large sheet of ice at Sunset Woods Park, but if it’s thrills you seek, take on the big sledding hill at Danny Cunniff Park.

Prefer your winter fun indoors? Keep your spring/summer games sharp with golf lessons and flag football

Park Board

programs in the Highland Park Field House (the dome off of Highway 41 behind the Golf Learning Center), or sharpen those racquetball and tennis skills at Deer Creek Courts.

Whether you’re anticipating holiday parties, a beach vacation, or just want to stay fit, now is always a great time to recommit to fitness, and the Recreation Center of Highland Park cannot be beat – especially now that annual memberships include group exercise classes!

When you work out at the Recreation Center, you’ll feel like you belong. You get friendly, familiar faces, not intimidation and attitude. You get fantastic instructors who remember you, and a clean, safe environment where everyone is welcome. See pages 54-67 for more information.

General Notice Pesticide Application NotificationThe Park District of Highland Parkstrives for quality and safety when designing and providing a main-tenance program for your parks. Managing pests is only one as-pect, yet an important one, of the overall management course. Our approach to controlling pests is termed IPM or Integrated Pest Management. IPM is a system uti-lizing a great deal of observation and multiple tactics for maintaining landscapes and controlling pests of turf grass, ornamentals and wood-lands. By using IPM, we meet our objectives of maximizing cultural, biological and environmental con-trols while minimizing chemical use. Occasionally, chemical means are necessary. When these are used on Park District grounds, notification is made through posting of signs in the area, as well as contacting resi-dents, by phone or email, listed on our “turf care notification registry.” If you would like to be added to the notification registry, please call the Director of Parks at 847.579.3130.
