But you don’t need to figure it all out on your own. Start by contacting our Accommodation Services team – we can advise you on where to live, how much it’s likely to cost, and how to find and secure a place.
We can also give you advice about independently-run student housing, such as Sydney University Village, Urbanest, Stucco Student Cooperative Living and the eight affiliated residential colleges.
ApplyEach accommodation provider has its own application procedures, dates and requirements. We encourage you to start the process as early as possible, as admission can be highly competitive.
Check out each of the provider’s websites (listed throughout this guide) for more details.
Whether you’re moving from overseas, interstate or around the corner from the family home, choosing where to live may be one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when starting university.

Sydney’s suburbs each have their own unique flavour and feel. Chippendale, Glebe, Newtown and Redfern are an easy walk from our main Camperdown/Darlington Campus.
Suburbs near campus
ChippendaleOne of Sydney’s newest urban hotspots, Chippendale is a centre of creativity, world-class architecture, and cool cafés. The suburb is bordered by Victoria Park (with an outdoor swimming pool) and Central Railway Station – the inner city’s transport hub.
A vibrant area that attracts an eclectic mix of residents and visitors from all walks of life, Chippendale is home to Central Park – a hidden enclave amid the concrete jungle. Places to try include Koi dessert bar, the hawker-style surprises of Spice Alley and a sugar hit from Doughnut Time.

GlebeA funky village by the bay, Glebe abounds in vegetarian cafés, big bookstores and stunning harbour views from Jubilee Park.
Bus services are frequent and will get you into the city in less than 20 minutes, or you can walk in 30-40 minutes.
The 370 bus service connects you to the Darlington end of campus, as well as Newtown and Coogee beach.
NewtownLong regarded as Sydney’s bohemian capital, Newtown is a cheerful contrast of organic coffee shops, vintage thrift stores, grungy political street art and the inescapable scent of Nag Champa incense. Vegan eco-friendly shops sit alongside tattoo parlours, cosy wine bars and a seemingly endless number of Thai restaurants and frozen yoghurt sellers.

RedfernBordering the southern end of campus is unassumingly cool Redfern. Characterised by a significant Aboriginal and migrant history, the community today has a diverse and multicultural flavour. The streets are lined with tall, narrow terraces that date back to the late 1800s, and are home to artisan bakeries, quirky cafés and lively bars.
“Being right in the heart of Sydney, you are so close to everything: the cafés of Glebe, the shops of Newtown. There’s a real sense of energy and life.”

The University of Sydney’s affiliated residential colleges were among the first in Australia, and are rich in heritage and tradition. Each college offers a supportive living environment that will help you to excel in your studies and enjoy a busy social calendar.
Residential colleges
If you’re moving out of home for the first time, colleges are a great way to make the transition to independence.
They offer three catered meals a day, security, and a strong academic and personal support network. You’ll also be encouraged to develop social, leadership, sporting and academic skills.
All college rooms are fully furnished.
Scholarships The colleges have a number of scholarships, bursaries and financial assistance programs. Most of these are awarded on the basis of financial need, as well as the contributions that a student could make to the academic, cultural or sporting life of the college.
