Use the SmithyÕs LATHEto cut and shape round orcylindrical pieces frommaterials as hard as high-carbon steel or as soft aswood. Make finish cutsand cut threads. Turncones, rods, shafts, pins, bolts, more. Do straightand tapered turning, fac-ing, knurling, cutting off, drilling, boring, reaming, and more.
22.. MMIILLLLIINNGGWith the SmithyÕs MILL,
youÕll cut and smooth flatsurfaces, slots, and angles.Use the micro-feed to createmirror-smooth surfaces. Cutshoulders, grooves,key-ways, slots, dovetails, gear teeth, and more. MILL turns vertically.
Use the SmithyÕs DRILLPRESS to drill, ream, andbore. It has all the capabili-ties of a standard drillpress. Drill and mill inter-changeably on the sameproject without resettingyour work. Create precisionholes up to 1.5Ó diameter.Counterbore, countersink, tap, hone, lap, and more.
LLAATTHHEE FFAACCIINNGGShape the face of a disk by cutting
across the workpiece in the lathe chuck.Or, cut an angle by adjusting the tool-postÕs angle. ItÕs an easy way to cutshoulders, resurface flywheels or diskbrakes, and more.
HHOORRIIZZOONNTTAALL DDRRIILLLLIINNGGMount a drill chuck into the latheÕs
tailstock: now itÕs a horizontal drill press. The headstock turns your project as youturn the tailstock handwheel, feedingthe drill bit into your work.
LLAATTHHEE BBOORRIINNGGNeed to bore a large hole for a small
engine cylinder, hydraulic cylinder, orrifle chamber? Use a boring bar mountedin the toolpost to get the job donequickly and accurately.

SSmmiitthhyy lleeaaddss tthhee lliigghhtt iinndduussttrriiaall ccllaassss.. Full-size industrial machining eqipment is too big for
home and light industrial shops, and hobby equipmentis too small for serious use. Smithy machines fit theneeds of small shop owners.
The Smithy is a compact, light industrial machine -the right size and price for home and business. You getthe broadest choice of features and models, with topvalue; plus more features, higher precision, and betterquality than any other brand.

ÒWhat started out as a hobby for me has turned into abusiness. I started Ôsouping upÕfishing reels for long castingcompetitions and when otherssaw how far they could cast, they started buying them. IdidnÕt expect it to turn into a business, but now I sell customreels all over the world.
Since I was a young boy, I have been fascinated by themachine shop. I started racing for Suzuki of Hawaii sever-al years ago and watching others modify my Vale bikerekindled my interest in machine work. I knew I could doit myself with the right tools. I bought a Smithy Granite1324 and did it myself. And that was just the beginning.PPrreecciissiioonn CCaassttiinngg OOvveerr 220000 YYaarrddss
I used my Smithy to modify fishing reels, then I decidedto make my own reels from scratch, which has evolvedinto my own business, ÒIsland Rocket Reels.Ó While learning how to customize my own fishing equipment, Ideveloped knowledge of the components plus gainedexperience and expertise on everything from installingmy own magnets to custom building an entire reel.
In long casting competitions, both distance and speedare essential. My reels go from 0 to 4,000 RPM in secondsand cast over 200 yards.
I make all the parts on my Smithy. The spool is aluminum to keep the weight low and the reels andratchets are titanium. I was using stainless but, for myapplication, stainless is too heavy. I need to keep every-thing as light as possible and I need to hold close tolerance to get long distance.

Next, I turn the3Ó T6 at both ends and borea 3/8Ó hole through the T6. I pressand epoxy the spindle to the T6. This assembly inthen mounted on a special driving tool I made onthe Smithy. The spool is mounted on the rotarytable and the side holes are drilled to lighten thespool even more. When Eddie and Leslie GÕs canine companion, Buddah, became incapacitated, Ed knew what to do. ÒIÕll make adog cart.Ó He got a Midas 1220 XL and did just that.Buddah not only enjoyed the cart, she became able towalk again. This home experiment grew into ÒEddieÕsWheels,Ó a strong business with worldwide sales.
EdÕs carts are custom-designed, fitted, and machined to fit the specialneeds of each dog. Carts have light-weight, welded aluminum frames, stainless steel hardware, and moldedclosed-cell foam padding. Thanks toSmithy, the business is going to thedogs, but Ed and Leslie wouldnÕt haveit any other way.
This machine LOOKS like a genuine Smithy but itÕs merely a dis-count catalog knock-off. It boast a big 17Ó swing, but its headstockand chuck are too small. The short bed doesnÕt provide enough massfor dampening so it vibrates. The undersized bearings wear out tooquickly. The chuck is too small for large work and it may be IMPOSSIBLE to find larger ones that fit. Components are low quality:
leadscrew threads are coarse; castings and finish are rough; electrical design is incomplete.
The high, like quill makesaccuracy milling difficult. High quillrequires a high toolpost placement.High toolpost and vibration-proneconstruction deflect (bend) whichseriously diminishes accuracy.

draw power from two ÒhotÓ wires, each supplying 110-volt. Thatspreads the power load between two lines and keeps the electricalflow balanced.
2 220V draws less current Ð and less current means less heat. Yourmotor stays cooler and lasts longer.
3 Drawing less current also helps eliminate overtaxing your electrical system. For example, if your lights dim when you turn on themachine, youÕre asking it to provide more electricity than it is able to.
4 220-volt causes less Òvoltage dropÓ or reduction in the flow ofelectricity. Keeping voltage constant helps your motor run smootherand last longer.

In the mid-1980Õs, Smithy Industries identified a huge gapbetween big, expensive industrial machine tools and tiny, inade-quate hobby equipment.
We introduced our Midas line and gave America a Òcompletemachine shop on your benchtopÓ Ñ 3-in-1 Lathe, Mill, Drills Ñcombined into one compact, high-quality, high-value unit.
Our Midas line remains as strong as ever: the all-in-one solutionfor individuals and companies that have smaller shops and budgets,do a moderate amount of machining, can forgo some Òbells &whistlesÓÉbut demand Smithy quality & service all the way.

hhoouussee:: Your exact savingsdepend on your situation buthereÕs a conservative example:Sending a piece out can easilycost $76 ($30 for a draft draw-ing, $30 for machining, and $16for materials). Do it yourselfand pay materials cost only:Same piece for $16. Do it your-self 5 times and save $300!
Many individuals and business-es regard their Smithys as aprofit center. Besides savingmoney by machining in-house,they MAKE good money bymachining for others. You caneasily see how profitable thiscan be: just think of how muchyouÕre currently paying some-one else to do your machining.

1.1. How often do you send work out to be machined?2.2. How much do you pay for machining?3.3. How long do you have to wait for parts to come back?4.4. How much business do you LOSE while waiting for parts?5.5. How much could you EARN by doing machining for others?6.6. How much productive time do you lose waiting for repair parts
