Science Department Strategies and Action Plans
2012 - 2013
Dear Parents and Our Young Scientists!!
The Science Teachers would like to welcome all their ‘Young Scientists’ into a
new academic year. This year, the learners explore real-world scenarios using
their understanding of the core concepts which not only makes them active
learner, it also constructs the elements which makes them a “21st Century
Learners.” It will provide an effective learning landscape that will prepare
students for success in the workplace – and in life.
GOALS
To promote scientific inquiry and to use scientific methods to plan and
conduct investigations and experiments.
To develop science terminology, practice inquiry skills, apply reading skills
and use critical thinking and problem solving skills.
To enrich and extend learning by presenting high-interest science
concepts and ideas related to the science concepts in each chapter.
To develop skills in comparing objects and events to better understand
changes.
To generate science questions and to use reference sources to research
and explore science concepts.
To develop scientific abilities and skills which can be projected and
applied to everyday life.
1. Meeting Deadlines
Assignments such as projects, journal work or research work should
be submitted on time. Project are done in the class only. Prior
notices are send to the parents to prepare the student with the
necessary material. Required material must be sent on the assigned
date. Failure to send any material, or research work will lead to low
mark attainment.
2. Missed Evaluation / Class Activities
No Quizzes, evaluation or tests are repeated. Student must submit a
sick leave. Failure to do so, will grant a failing grade.
3. Lab
Labs are the backbone of the Science curriculum. Grade 3 and 4 will
have lab session once a week. While, Grade 1 and 2 will have Lab
session with the classroom boundaries. These are based on the
Science concept taught during the week.
4. Books, Copy books etc.
Student should have their books and copy book at all times
Untidy and incomplete work will lead to low mark attainment.
5. Grade Distribution and Communication
ASSESSMENT (FOR THREE TERMS)
Assessment Tools
Ongoing Assessments (Quizzes ).
Homework to be checked and graded for accuracy, understanding and
completeness.
Class work to be evaluated and graded by the teacher.
Skills in experimentation or activities to be assessed.
Portfolio Assessment ( Projects Work )
Worksheets and class activities will be checked for completeness,
accuracy and /or understanding.
Pass percentage is 60%.
Unit tests and assessments may consist of multiple choice, short
answers, direct application problems, critical thinking situations and/
or open response items.
