Thank you so much for being a dedicated BMS prayer warrior. Your prayers underpin everything BMS is doing and will do this year, and we are so grateful to have your support.

Our new-style annual Prayer Guide has had mixed reviews – with some people loving the changes and others missing elements of the previous version. We have heard the feedback and we hope the changes we have made in response will help to inspire you in prayer this year.

You will be pleased to know our workers’ directory has made a comeback. It contains the full names and locations of all our mission workers (where security allows) and is the centre spread (page 20) of this year’s guide so it can be easily pulled out and displayed to remind you to pray for BMS

workers by name. You will also find some extra photos dotted throughout the year and quotes from some of our mission workers explaining why they value your prayers.

Through editing this issue, I have been reminded again of just how difficult it is to even begin to put into words prayer requests for some situations in our world. The needs are so great – they defy the constraints of our language. On page 17, BMS General Director Kang-San Tan has written a helpful article about how to pray for our broken world.

Wars, hurricanes, floods, poverty and pain. What is a Christian to do with these things? Faced with overwhelming suffering, Christians tend to adopt two extreme views of the world, which are often revealed in our prayer lives. Either we see the world as fundamentally evil, or fundamentally good. If we assume it is evil, we tend to adopt a crusading mindset against people from different faiths as enemies of God’s kingdom. Our prayers are characterised by heavenly concerns and rejection of the world. If we assume it is essentially good, we might embrace multiple paths to salvation, pray for world peace and focus on bringing immediate practical relief alone, forgetting that lasting transformation of societies can only be accomplished through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Against these extreme polarities, the Apostle Paul encourages a more nuanced and prayerful view of the world. Romans 8 offers great encouragement for Christians who struggle to make sense of the sad events of our broken world. The Apostle Paul invites us to embrace the extraordinary mission of the people of God within God’s overarching purpose: the rebirth of all creation. In this context, we can, with Paul, see the world as:

• good, but incomplete (v 19)

• good, but at present in bondage (v 20)

• good, but awaiting liberation (v 21)

• good, but pregnant with the future world (v 22)

Ultimately, the heart of Paul’s invitation is the phrase: “in the same way” – an attitude of empathy and prayerful longing for God’s will, rather than either opposition or indulgence. When Christians learn to respond to world events through this kind of discipline of prayer, not only does creation groan, but we do too (Romans 8: 23). When we ourselves “do not know what we ought to pray for” – facing the complex suffering of the ‘good, but’ world – then “the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans” (Romans 8: 26). When we extend our prayers to include the salvation of the nations, we discover the God who is groaning also.

My hope is that the stories and prayer requests in this Prayer Guide will become instruments for Christians globally to experience the deeper life of the Spirit, and see the faithful groan with God for his creation.

Pray for Pastor Zambo. Through BMS’ revolving loan fund in Mozambique, he can now buy diabetes medicine for his wife and continue in church ministry.

Pray for Achta, a recipient of life-saving surgery at Guinebor II Hospital in Chad. Pray for courage in recovery, complete healing and a fruitful life.

Pray for BMS work in Afghanistan. Pray especially for our workers involved in mental health. Fifty years of on/off conflict has traumatised a generation.

Health Mozambique

November 2018 SUNDAY

Pray for the estimated 1,600 believers who make up the indigenous Tunisian Church. Ask for God’s blessing on them and BMS workers as they worship today.

Pray for BMS’ primary partner in Tunisia. Having recently transitioned to become an international NGO, the Tunisian Church can now play a larger role in its work.

TUESDAY

Pray for Naama, a BMS worker who is supporting special needs educators in Tunisia and helping local organisations to provide a better quality of care.

WEDNESDAY

Pray for Mary and Beth, BMS nurses in Tunisia, as they equip health professionals and family members to better deliver palliative care.

THURSDAY

Pray for BMS worker Sophie who arrived in Tunisia in October 2017 to take up her role as Communications Co-ordinator for our partner organisation.

FRIDAY

Pray that BMS’ new partnership in Tunisia, with what is the country’s only registered local Christian organisation, will be fruitful and effective.

Self-help groups (SHGs) enable participants to gain new skills and start businesses. Pray that our growing SHG programme will change individual lives and impact whole communities.

Guinean women are often marginalised and mistreated. Pray that through friendships, our team can help women come to know their true value in God’s eyes.

WEDNESDAY

Pray for the young people in our football programme to develop their talent in the sport, and life skills to equip them to make good choices.

THURSDAY

Pray that the country’s leaders make education a priority, and for our team, supporting teachers and students.

FRIDAY

Living in a country with limited healthcare can be stressful. Ask God for his protection over the health of our workers, particularly the children.
