The Right Move at the Right TimeBob and Marion Spence were dedicatededucators at Bridgeton High School, heas vice principal and she as an artteacher, when they found a secondcalling. In 1979, during a visit to a localframing shop, they purchased more thanjust a frame; they purchased the CanvasBag Gallery and Frame Shoppe. Theyalso helped revamp the neighboringGallery 50 to showcase local artists.

Bob served as president of BridgetonMain Street Association, ran marathonsfor charity and was active in RotaryInternational, which included visits to

Dominican Republic, France and India.Marion volunteered with Seven Oaks, thewomen’s organization responsible forbringing Bridgeton Hospital into being, and they hosted exchange students.

In 2013, they closed the shop after 33years. They’re ready for their nextadventure – retirement living at theMasonic Village at Burlington.

“We started talking about the wholeconcept of retirement living a few yearsago, just about the time we received apostcard from Masonic Village,” Bobsaid. “Marion’s motivation was that we’rein good health now. We want to make amove before we have to.”

The Spence’s attended a presentation about Masonic Village’s plan to construct newcottages and were instantly hooked. After researching and exploring other options, they keptcoming back to Masonic Village. “We like that it is a brand new home,” he said. “We also wanted some place where we couldreside a long time. That was the number one thing. If we get to a point where one of us hasto have surgery, rehab and nursing services are right there."

“Everyone we’ve met at Masonic Village is very nice. It is such a fantastic place just basedon the people.”

One of the best aspects of the carefree lifestyle at Masonic Village is saying goodbye tohousehold chores and maintenance. Bob is especially looking forward to no longer doingyard work.

“We had a good sized property, all woods,” he said. “One thing I won’t miss is poison ivy. Iwould get it every summer. I won’t miss the snow shoveling either.”

Moving from a house in the country, the Spence’s also look forward to Masonic Village’sproximity to stores and restaurants, and the option to take a shuttle to run errands orparticipate in trips.

Masonic Village broke ground on 66 new retirement living cottages in July, with the firstones expected to be complete in February. The cottages include two-bedroom andtwo-bedroom den options with between 1,944 and 2,342 square feet of living space. Inaddition, 85 retirement living rental units also offer carefree living in one-bedroom,one-bedroom/den and two-bedroom layouts. One convenient monthly service fee includes a flexible dining plan, twice monthlyhousekeeping, maintenance of furnished appliances and repairs in residences, heating/airconditioning, water, sewer, electric, property taxes, trash removal, snow removal, security, grounds maintenance, scheduled transportation, use of campus amenities and recreationalopportunities. Greetings Residents and Friends of the Masonic Village atBurlington,

Inside this Fall edition of “Family Matters”, you will findinformation about all of the “happenings” here at theVillage. As you will see our Cottage Home project is wellunderway. Foundations are being poured and framing hasbegun to placed. If you haven’t already toured one of ournew homes, please make arrangements to do so. Thatisn’t all of the construction on campus though. Later thismonth, we will have two floors of our “west” side of thehealthcenter vacated and our new retirement livingapartments will be under construction as well.

But, why stop there? Cedar Commons, our personal care supported living area had anOpen House on the area that is currently called North 2 and some residents have moved upthere and are settling in to this refreshed area. Some highlights for our Cedar Commonsresidents are the addition of a formal dining area and foods available all-day in our less-formal dining area. In addition, each room will soon have a micro-fridge, individualmedication cabinets and mailboxes for personalized services. Our “Neighborhood Model” of support services for Keystone Center and Cedar Commonshas kicked off and our new Neighborhood Guides and Life Enrichment Team Coaches havebegun their orientation. We are looking forward to this enhanced level of support servicesgrowing in these areas. In the near future, our rehabilitation team and health center physician/provider practices willbe temporarily relocated to the second floor of the Keystone Center in the area known as“Little West”. This temporary move is necessary to complete some renovations to the lowerlevel of our building. Stay tuned later this Fall to learn about some exciting programing supporting our residentswith cognitive changing abilities. We will start this enhanced service in North Cape May inthe near future. As I close, I want to thank everyone who participated in our fundraising efforts to supportseniors in areas affected by the recent hurricanes. We raised over $6300. Our communitywill be recognized later this month in New Orleans at our national trade association annualmeeting, LeadingAge because of these efforts. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward toseeing you around the community! With warm regards,

Masonic Village at Burlington (MVB) and AcaciaHospice recently focused efforts on the elder victimsof Hurricane Harvey and Irma. “We were horrified tosee those elders in an assisted living community inTexas sitting chest high in murky water waiting to berescued. Then we received the information fromLeadingAge that monetary donations wereneeded. Our team quickly got together and put a planin place to see what we could do as a community tohelp those in need,” stated Cindy Shemansky,Assistant Executive Director/Administrator.

The first thing that MVB did was to place HurricaneRelief Jars at the Café register, and at the Receptiondesk. The jars all had a note asking “Please dropyour spare change or a dollar or two into the jar forHurricane Relief.” Knowing that some may only havesome change to spare, but money from all of usadds up!

The MVB Development Department set up a donation link on the Masonic Village website sothat individuals could make a secure donation with their credit card which would bedesignated for Hurricane Relief.

A “We Helped Elders” Tree was placed in the lobby outside of the Cornerstone Restaurantduring September. For a $1 donation or more, the donor could write their name on a Flag,Star, or Ribbon and place it on the tree. A Farmer’s Market and Bake Sale was held on September 8th with all proceeds designatedfor Hurricane Relief. Within 30 minutes of the doors opening everything was pretty muchsold out.

The New Jersey Master Masons collected “Necessities of Life” items, such as bottled water, new clothing, baby food, canned food, diapers, soap, towels, etc., and our community actedas one of their donation drop off locations. MVB team members and residents supportedthis endeavor and before they knew it, the entire board room was filled with items to be sentto the Hurricane victims. MVB paid for the gas and tolls to have these items transported.

Lastly, a “Basket/Gift Item” event was held. Thirty-seven donated Gift Baskets, Gift Itemsand/or Gift Cards were displayed in the Lobby from September 11th to September18th. For a donation of $5.00, the donor received a sheet of tickets that they could use toplace in a canister in front of the item they would like to win. For a donation of $10.00, thedonor received 3 sheets of tickets. This was one of the most popular events. Residents, family members, team members, volunteers, visitors, and vendors all donated funds. Thedrawing was held on Monday the 18th in front of a crowd of residents, team members, visitors and volunteers.

Through the various Hurricane relief events MVB and Acacia Hospice raised $6,310.37.This money will be forwarded to the LeadingAge Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. 100% of allfunds go directly to help elders and caregivers impacted by these devastating hurricanes.
