Competition for the New World

Ch. 2.2Spain

The strongest country in the world didn't like that both England and France were exploring.  They also disagreed on religion Spain was Catholic the other two were Protestant.

Spain and France

In the Florida area a group of French Protestants founded a colony.  Shortly after a Spanish commander massacred the people because of their religious choice. (sound familiar?)

Spain and England

 Not the same religious values.

English sailors or sea dogs had smaller ships, but they were fast.

Spain's Navy was the most powerful while  England's was just ok.

With their faster ships English sailors would pirate Spanish vessels stealing treasure.

Doing this angered Spain, so they sent their entire armada to defeat England.  Then...

*In a group of 3:

After the Spanish Armada was severely crippled, what are some things that you think happed to Spain in the near future.

*Video Clip

In 1588 the armada was "defeated" or severely crippled.  Spain will never again be as powerful as it was.

 Educate natives on reading,

farming, and trade skills.

Key Points:How slavery started.

Why the African slave trade occurred.

Slavery

Ch. 2.4 During the 1600's slavery was already    established in the Americas.

Slavery has been around since ancient civilizations (people captured in battle or sold to pay debts).

Plantations needed lots of workers.  At first the Spanish used local natives, however most died off from overwork and disease.  Many also joined together and revolted.

*Plantation Scenario

Needing a new source of labor plantation owners turned to Africa

1. Most were immune to European diseases

2. No friends or family in America to rise up

3. A permanent source of labor

4. Many had experience working on farms

Sep 154:09 PM

Plantation Scenario  Ch. 2.4

You are the owner of a Spanish plantation, that exports sugarcane to Spain.  You currently have 30 native slaves to run the plantation.

Your goal is to make sure your plantation prospers, if it doesn't you might loose your status or even you life.

Choose one:

Left

You work your slaves

to exhaustion everyday

just feeding them enough

to make it to tomorrow.

Right

You traded your sugar for

blankets and clothing made

in Spain to treat your slaves

with respect.

Lose 5 slaves from exhaustion  Lose 25 slaves from disease

Left

Apprehend 20 natives from a

nearby village forcing them to

work on your plantation.

Right

Teach your slaves the Spanish way.  Teaching them to farm, read, and how to be a Catholic.

Your plantation is burned down from a

revolt of the natives tribe.

Gain 25 local natives trust and they

work on your plantation.

Go back to Spain a

failure to your

family's name

Speak with the governor to

gain military support to

retaliate for the revolt

and massacre the tribe

Participate in the African

slave trade and rebuild

your plantation.

After awhile you force the

natives to convert to

Catholicism, and force them

to get rid of their culture.

Natives that resist Catholicism you treat poorly, forcing them to work harder under worse conditions than ever.

Natives revolt and

burn your plantation

Natives start to perish from your conditions, you don't have enough people to run your plantation.

*Would you have stood up or lived the life?*Does business today make decisions based on lifestyle and greed?

(have we learned anything from history?)

Slave Trade

Ch. 2.4

After disease killed most of the natives the plantation owners needed a workforce.  In 1509 one governor wrote the king and he sent 50 slaves to the colony.

Eventually colonies became reliant on slave trade, and merchants entered the slave trade.

Kings in costal African cities would capture people from inland cities and trade them for goods to Spanish merchants.  African Diaspora is when Africans were sent away from their home land to another continent.

*How do you feel about trading goods for a human life?

Sep 154:09 PM

Middle Passage

Ch. 2.4

The Middle Passage refers to route from Africa to the Americas, the movement of slaves.  Conditions were harsh and slaves were packed into boats as tight as possible.

Slavery in the Americas

Ch. 2.4

In the early days many slaves resisted and ran away, living in maroons or with natives.  Some would even start rebellions.

To stop this the Spanish passed the slave code.  Laws that made the harsh conditions, just a little less harsh...

*Would the slave code have kept you from rebelling?

Over time racism began because Europeans believed that all people with black skin were an inferior race.
