Thank you to those parents and community members who have welcomed my

husband Ray and me to Groote Eylandt. We are enjoying the ‘village’ feel of the place

and look forward to participating more as time progresses. We are particularly

impressed with the excellent manners of the young people in Alyangula, including the

school students. Congratulations parents, you have done a great job of bringing them

up.

Classes have begun in a positive manner and mostly without tears (from students or

staff!) This term will be action-packed as usual and we look forward to the annual

Meet and Greet session with parents and teachers in their classrooms on the

afternoon of Tuesday 9th February - further details are in this newsletter.

Royal Life Saving Society of Australia will be here for two weeks of swimming lessons

from Monday 29th February, culminating in a swimming carnival on Friday 11th March.

Details will be forwarded by your child’s teacher about their days/times and what

equipment is needed. Start training now for the staff v parents v student relay.

In the final week of term, from 29th to 31st of March a soccer clinic will be held for

classes at the school. This was funded by a special grant for which we thank Brandon

Bull for his hard work in gaining this support for student learning and fun. Perhaps it

will help us work off some of the Easter Egg calories!

Speaking of Easter, it could be useful to get a start on helping your child to get their

Easter Bonnet organised as there are only six weekends to go before the big parade.

PISA (Program for International Student Assessment)

Three AAS students participated in last year’s international student assessment exam-

ination, held over 70 countries around the world with 500 000 students participating,

representing approximately 30 million students aged 15 in those countries. Thank you

to Maruchel Snell, Neil Morris and Michael Gill who will receive certificates

acknowledging their time, hard work and great thinking.

Mobile Phone Policy - Students A number of concerns have arisen around safety, privacy and the use of mobile phones by students. We are mindful that some students have the need to communicate with parents and encourage parents

to telephone the school office if messages need to be given to children urgently. The school staff is currently drafting a policy that may involve checking the phones in at the office before school starts and retrieving them at the end of the day. This of course would involve discussion and ratification by the school council. At all times, the school discourages students from bringing to school any valuable personal items.

Page 8: Alyangula Area School - Territory Stories: Home 5 Alyangula Area School Newsletter Justin olville—MS teacher Maurice Hogan This is my second year on Groote teaching Middle School.
