Growing up, I loved not only reading Maya Angelou’s poetry, but also listening to it. Hearing her voice, tone and style made me feel more deeply what she was saying with her words. With Angelou’s recent passing, many Facebook posts and articles repeated one of her famous statements that touched so many people:

I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Our work at Hillel is not about our programs (although you’ll see many listed on these pages). And it is not about the numbers of students involved in any particular event (although you’ll see those listed too). It’s about bringing a welcoming and inviting feeling into our Hillel.  How students feel about their Judaism, their community and their sense of belonging is of primary importance to our work.

When the students decided to pursue monthly bagel brunches and conducted a #schmear campaign to generate interest, we consciously reminded ourselves this was not about the bagels. It was about creating a welcoming and inviting feeling into our Hillel space for a warm, ongoing community event, outside of our Friday evening celebrations.

When we dedicated a separate space for graduate students and young professionals to have Shabbat dinner, we knew it was because they wanted to feel a part of their own community, separate from the undergraduate experience.

When we deliver chicken soup to students who are under the weather, it is because we want them to feel their Jewish community is there to provide a piece of home, comfort and caring to them when they feel most vulnerable.

When we train our students in peer-to-peer engagement, it is because we know how it feels for students to be invited by their peers to be a part of their Jewish community - to feel they matter and belong.

When we support programming in Detroit, it is because we want our students to feel a connection to the vibrancy of the city through their lived experiences and not through what they read or hear in the news.

And when the students combatted the anti-Israel divestment resolution, they ensured that their peers felt informed, empowered and equipped. It was just as important that students had a space to talk to their peers and Hillel staff about how they felt as it was to counter the anti-Israel claims that emerged on campus.

While it is challenging for us to relay how Michigan Hillel makes our students feel throughout the pages of this Newsletter, we hope their smiles, their diversity, their stories, and their closeness do it justice.

I have just completed the first 10 months of my term of office as Chair of the University of Michigan Hillel’s Board of Trustees. This has proven to be an exciting though challenging time in which to lead this distinguished organization. I welcome this opportunity to share some thoughts with you.

Any organization that involves both volunteer and professional leadership functions best when there is mutual respect and confidence in place. We at the University of Michigan Hillel are blessed with an extraordinary director, Tilly Shames, who has surrounded herself with a skilled staff as she reconfigures the professional structure. I want to welcome Stacy Carroll who has recently joined our team as Director of Advancement.

The newly constituted Board of Trustees has attracted additional members from a committed and loyal University of Michigan alumni group. The Board is

dedicated to enhancing all aspects of Hillel and ensuring our role in campus life.

Michigan’s campus will continue to present its challenges. The recent activity related to the BDS Movement gives testimony to both the resilience and strength of our student body and the ability of our professional staff to mobilize and equip our students in this important political arena. There is little doubt that we must remain prepared to meet additional challenges surrounding anti-Israel campaigns in the future. I am confident that we have the will and talent to prevail in these efforts.

I look forward to this fall and the opportunity to work, share and enjoy the University of Michigan Hillel with all of you.

Not everyone’s identity is the same; rather, one’s Jewish identity is uniquely one’s own. At Michigan Hillel, unifying over 6,000 Jewish identities within one organization produces the most incredible, pluralistic Jewish community of which I have ever been a part.

Jewish students on our campus may share a connection with one another based on a shared identity; however, it takes much more than commonality to feel a part of a community. After some time on the University of Michigan campus, I realized that many of my own Jewish peers did not feel comfortable in the same community in which I felt at home. In order to truly feel a sense of belonging, people need to develop personal relationships, discover their area of interest, and feel a sense of ownership.

Creating spaces and opportunities for individuals to connect with one another is the foundation for Michigan Hillel’s thriving community. We supply opportunities for all students to connect with their Jewish identity in their own unique ways, be that through nature, tikun olam (repairing the world), arts, culture, food, prayer, Israel, learning or adventure.

I recognize how fortunate I am to have had such an incredible experience within Hillel that has helped me build my home at the University of Michigan. I hope to continue to help provide Jewish students an opportunity to create a Jewish home for themselves at Michigan.

Hillel Brings Big Questions to TEDxby JoHanna Rothseid

In March, Ask Big Questions collaborated with TEDxUofM for a second time at the annual TEDxUofM Conference, entitled “Against the Grain”. Attendees at ten tables, guided by peers trained by Ask Big Questions, discussed issues in which people choose to “go against the grain.” A graphic illustrator listened to the discussions and drew a real-time illustration of the conversations (as seen in the photo below). Attendees could watch their ideas turn into tangible concepts. Ask Big Questions and TEDx worked together to promote positive, deep interaction among students. Students envisioned ways to enact optimistic change on Michigan’s campus, on a global scale and personally as well.

Lieberman delivers ‘last lecture’ for Golden Apple Awardby Emilie Plesset

About 750 University students, staff and members of the Ann Arbor community stood and applauded as History Prof. Victor Lieberman took the stage to receive the Golden Apple Award and give his “last lecture” on April 2, 2014 in the Rackham Auditorium.

Sponsored by the University’s chapter of Hillel, the Golden Apple Award was inspired by Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrkanos, a 1st- and 2nd-century Jewish scholar. The award honors professors who embody ben Hyrkanos’ mantra of living as if each day is his or her last, dispensing their knowledge through student engagement. The award has been presented annually for the past 24 years to highly acclaimed professors nominated by students.

“It’s very satisfying to realize that my efforts are appreciated by some people,” Lieberman said. “It’s an incentive to continue working and putting energy and enthusiasm into course preparation. It’s a recognition of the past and incentives for the future.”

The ceremony provides professors with an opportunity to give their “last lecture.” In his last lecture, titled “What I Think I Know About History,” Lieberman discussed the history of the world and his predictions for the future.

University President Mary Sue Coleman, who was presented with the first Golden Apple Award for University Leadership, spoke before Lieberman delivered his lecture.

“I am deeply humbled by this award,” Coleman said. “There’s nothing quite as important as being with students, lecturing them and seeing them grow as they progress through their academic careers and their time at the University.”

Jewish Penicillin Hotlineby Krin Klein

If your student gets sick at school, what’s a mother to do? Call the student-led group Jewish Penicillin Hotline (JPH) and a volunteer will deliver kosher matzah ball soup (chicken or vegetarian) to your sick student at no cost. Hillel staff will then follow up with you and your student the next day to see how your student is feeling and if there is anything else we can do. JPH has been around for 6 years and is widely popular among students and parents alike. In the 2013-14 school year, 22 students helped deliver 361 soups, and JPH even won the Tikun Olam award at Hillel this spring, from fellow students, for its commitment to

Taglit-Birthright IsraelBirthright taught me that a feeling is worth a thousand words. The Kotel was breathtaking, the Ein Gedi oasis left me speechless, and the sunrise over Masada was extraordinary, but describing those things does not capture Israel. Birthright was special because I saw and felt the most amazing place on Earth.

Sunday Bagel Brunch at Hillelby Dalia Adler

In October 2013, with funding from the Irwin and Bethea Green College Life Fund, the University of Michigan Hillel launched a broad-based cultural initiative: Sunday Bagel Brunch. Through monthly Sunday morning brunches we’ve been able to appeal to the broadest sector of the Jewish student body, leading to greater opportunities for students to learn about Jewish happenings on campus, and increasing Jewish identity formation at Michigan. On average 175 students attended each brunch on the first Sunday of each month, drawing students who otherwise wouldn’t have attended Hillel events. Many students said Bagel Brunch was a welcoming atmosphere and 94% of students surveyed said they would bring a friend with them to a future brunch at Hillel.

Nurturing Empowered Leadership

Michigan Hillel’s student leaders know it is important to invest in their peers, so Hillel’s Governing and Programming Boards seized opportunities to create leadership development sessions in the 13-14 school year, partnering with knowledgeable professionals on campus and in the Ann Arbor community.

Our March session featured ZingTrain: Zingerman’s unique approach to business. During the 2-hour workshop, “Servant Leadership – Leadership’s Role in Great Service”, students learned how to be a good student leader: to provide vision; to give great service to those they work with; to manage in an ethical manner; to learn and teach; and to say, “Thanks!” A highlight of the day included saying thanks to our graduating seniors, a panel of whom had shared their own thoughts about what it means to be a Hillel leader.

September’s session focused on the theme of Empowered Leadership and featured Mark Bernstein, U-M Regent and past Chair of the Hillel Governing Board.

January’s session was lead by Hillel’s student leaders,

focusing on Hillel’s mission statement and strategic goals. They explored how each individual group represents the diverse Jewish community on campus and furthers Hillel’s mission and goals.

Earlier in January, the newly elected Governing and Programming Boards met to plan for the winter semester at U-M’s Radrick Recreation Area, taking on U-M’s Challenge Course for a day of team building and envisioning.

Students who went to these sessions throughout the year gained valuable leadership skills that will help them in college and beyond. Thank you to Jack and Barbara Berman for your generous support of our leadership development series.

Engaging Freshman Leadersby Judy Lansky

When freshmen walk into Michigan Hillel for the first time, they find a plethora of opportunities and new friends. Hillel has a welcoming group specifically for them: First Year Students of Hillel (FYSH). FYSH, one of Hillel’s many student groups, creates a place for new Jewish Wolverines to find friends.

FYSH consists of lively sophomores who create enticing programs for freshmen. These sophomores also look for energetic freshmen who might want to lead FYSH when the sophomores relinquish their reins in January. The new leaders will plan events for the next freshman class, and the cycle continues.

The first ever FYSH retreat was held this winter to help the new leaders get to know each other. They celebrated Shabbat at Hillel to start off the weekend, then participated in icebreakers and a time of reflection.

The students spent Saturday team building, brainstorming new event ideas, and learning how Hillel works. The most exciting part of the day was playing two intensely competitive games of laser tag filled with laughter and laser beams.

Sunday, FYSH returned to Hillel for a mission statement workshop and a Hillel-wide Bagel Brunch. They then elected nine new leaders.

The FYSH retreat set the tone for the rest of the semester and helped the “FYSHies” form deeper relationships with each other. Events resulting from this retreat included a Super Bowl party, ice skating, Shabbat in the Dorms, and a pre-Passover carbfest. The FYSH leaders are now anticipating meeting the incoming class and are excited to bring them into the Hillel community.

My involvement with Jewish Detroit Initiative (JDI), which opens doors for students to become actively involved in the city of Detroit, has challenged and strengthened my Jewish identity. I have been able to build relationships within the Jewish community and beyond, and to explore concepts of Jewish pride, social justice and spirituality.

One example of a recent JDI event was “D360: See Detroit Through Your Own Lens.” Held April 6, 2014, this event brought college students from seven colleges and universities together to explore how they might pursue their passion in the city of Detroit. Students were inspired by a group of speakers, many who had themselves actively engaged in Detroit’s community to create something unique and positive in the city. These experiences have deeply informed my own personal and professional goals, and I have decided to live and work full-time in the city of Detroit.

Kol HaKavod“Representing the University of Michigan, please welcome Kol HaKavod!” I hear as we walk in front of a crowd of eight hundred people at Kol HaOlam (Jewish a cappella nationals). I am part of Kol HaKavod, the premier Jewish a cappella group at U-M, which was chosen out of fifty collegiate groups to compete. Singing is my passion and Kol HaKavod has been an amazing enrichment to my freshman year. I’m thankful this experience allows me to be a part of the Jewish community at the University of Michigan and Hillel. We truly thank Hillel for the opportunities provided to Kol HaKavod.
