ach year, the Lower School Library puts a Book Fair for the Lower School
students to gain experience in choosing books. Ranging from pre-kindergarten to fourth grade reading levels, the books represent a large range of genres. Taking time out from their classes, the grades individually visit the Fair, located in the Upper School’s Madden Hall. By first previewing the collection with the class, the children may return with their parents to purchase the books. The Book Fair will

1 / lection Day has always been thought of as a day for adults,18+. But no longer. On November 7, 2000, the Lower School
wanted to emphasize the importance of politics in our
society, even for those 18 -. Students were able to cast their votes in our own PCDS election, George W. Bush winning the
kindergarten. A brunch was served for their parents who were either on their way from or to the polls. Following the brunch, a musical program was performed.
The little ones sang patriotic songs like “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” and the “Star-Spangled Banner.” This celebration of our democratic government helped to show the children that learning and fun can always work together.
Max Leonesio is ready to cast his ballot for the future of his country.

Tf he fihe fifth grade trip to Astrocam p is a great experience for students to be involved with each other and the world around them. As the first class trip PCDS offers, Astrocamp in Idyllwild California allows the students a close knit area to study at the Desert Science Center and to get to know their classmates better. Astronom y is highly emphasized, with w ide ranging activities that allow the students to be more involved. Astrocam p was a good introduction for fifth graders into the new world of Middle School.

Stephen Vrla shows his adventurous side.
Seventh graders swimm ing at Slide Rock.
' TI he seventh grade trip is a bonding experience in northern Arizona. Learning teamwork and tolerance, much time is spent outdoors. Eight seniors accompany the class to play the role of counselor, mentor, and friend. The days were spent on ropes courses, hiking, canoeing, and team work activities. The nights were filled with skits, stories and time spent by the bon fire. Some favorite memories could be: watching the seniors bounce around on stage making fools of themselves, climbing a rock wall blind folded, or kitchen duty. Well, maybe not kitchen duty.

music begins, there is a huge table of food with an ice
sculpture, and you feel the butterflies in your stomach. Could this be some lame, made for TV movie? No, it would be your
first dance. The 7th and 8th grade dance was held on November 17 in Madden Hall. This was a great opportunity for the two grades to socialize, eat, dance, and maybe learn a
little about life. The girls were decked in glitter wear, while the boys hadn’t seem to have changed since school that afternoon.
New moves were born on the dance floor, while new twists were added to old ones. Whether experiencing that feeling of waiting to be asked to dance by your crush, or just letting it all loose in a big
group, fun was had by all.

I he PCDS swim and dive teams both enjoyed an amazing season. For the first time, the girls, led by Captain Sarah Hurwitz, went undefeated in the dual meets. They later captured the title for the 4A Desert Sky Region Championships. The boys, under Captain Doug Loback, only lost one dual meet and placed third at Regionals. Michaela Skloven, a junior, dove to automatic All-American status at Regionals en route to her school record and victory. She finished fourth at States. Jennifer Lewkowitz broke the school record in the 100 fly on her way to a fifth- place finish in the state. Adam Lewkowitz won the 200 free and broke the school record at States. Jason Bodell also set school records in both the 200 IM and 100 free at States, and in the 100 back during the dual meets. Rebecca Allison, Tracy Brinkman, and Megan Bullock all placed at Regionals and achieved top-four status at states. The boy’s relay of Jason Bodell, Adam Lewkowitz, Doug Loback, and Beau Kenworthy broke the school record in the 400 free relay. The girl’s relay o f Rebecca Allison, Tracy Brinkman, Jennifer Lewkowitz, and Erin Berensini broke the 200 free relay school record, and Megan Bullock substituted for Erin Berensini to break the 200 medley relay school record. These individuals’ efforts led both teams to victory: the girl’s team placed fourth and the boy’s team placed eleventh in the 4A State Championships.

f he power of the PCDS Lacrosse team stems from the team’s brute strength and force. Our team had some of the highest scores in the league, and our track record is astonishing. A PCDS game is always truly enjoyable to watch because of the passion and energy that the boys put into their playing. Due to the many returning seniors, including captains Jeff Sand, Sab Fabricius, and Greg Abdouch, the team was very strong. Lacrosse enjoyed an amazing year and we look forward to next year’s season.

ats, balls, sliding pads, and visors are the essential articles of clothing for any softball player. This year’s softball team was composed of a mixture of returning players and new freshman. An experienced pitcher was part of the new crop that allowed for a successful season. The returning seniors were enthusiastic and eager to win.

season the members of this team will not soon forget.

4 A s you look through the 2001 Phoenician, please join m e in thanking the many talented students who have made an enormous commitment to make this book as
b i wonderful as possible.
This year the staff will be saying goodbye to two very talented young i women. We hope that Michelle Hertzfeld and Kim Ruht are as successful
1 jwith everything they attempt as they have been with the yearbook. Also,* good luck to the new yearbook staff— Sophie Nye as senior editor, Clint Corcoran and Humberto Duarte as junior ' editors, and Roberto Morales as most valued photographer and photo editor for the second year. Each of the editors has R shown his/her dedication by working very hard on the current book. In addition, there have been many other students who
have worked on pages to help meet deadlines.
V A special thank you to Nick Barranco who is responsible for the wonderful middle school sports copy, and to Gordan 1 Kmjaic and Julie McReynolds for the graphics you see throughout the book. I ’m sure you will all enjoy Julie’s work on
the dragons and Gordan’s work on the sun and moon.
