Welcome to Country P&C MEETING CALENDAR OF EVENTS Georgetown SS Explicit Improve- ment Agenda – Reading Compre- hension and Higher Order Thinking Skills Last week saw two major conferences held by Education Queensland that involved staff at Georgetown State School. Mrs Day attended the first ever Kindy conference where she had a great deal of input of where our program should be heading. She was able to report back that the Kindy team in Brisbane were very pleased with the current program in place and put it forward as a model for other schools to follow. Congratulations to the early childhood staff of Lau- ren, Robyn and Amanda. The kindy kids do appear to be having a great time at school. I have had the pleasure of observing their rest time, which is a very creative use of the term, “rest time.” Following the kindy conference I attended the Principal confer- ence which had the focus on innovation, equity and impact. Again I believe Georgetown is doing very well when measured up against these goals. A major focus is the use of technology and the need to be focussing on skills such as computer coding in the school as more than half of the new jobs in the near future will require skills in this area. We have started work in this area and the students will be well placed when they leave for secondary school. Another major point to come from the conference was that stu- dent achievement can be directly linked to how many words they read each day and the amount of conversation in the household. We talk about reading a great deal but not about how much we talk to our students. Oral language development is critical to developing strong reading skills and this starts at home. It starts at home with young children and continues through their developmental years. Ask questions of your children. What are you learning in science? What about Technology? What is coding? The students are continuing to rehearse for the dance eistedd- fod. It is coming along really well. We are organising costumes for this event and will give Parents the opportunity to purchase them if you want to keep them. Information will be sent home regarding this. We will also be sending home a note requesting information as to which children will be staying with the school so that transport can be arranged. I would like to thank Mrs Tincknell Mrs Le Brocq for their work in preparing for an upcoming audit. To assist in this it would be ap- preciated if Parents could return outstanding requested forms. We live in a small community where every-one knows every-one but un- fortunately we all live a big world that exists outside of Georgetown that requires what at times seems to be an endless procession of paper work. All the same we need to comply as it is a legal require- ment. If you are having problems locating the form or have questions please contact the school for further information. The P&C A.G.M. and monthly meeting will be held next Mon- day, March 13. Come along and have some input into your child’s education.
