Q: How are the readings chosen for Sunday

Mass?A: Because Sunday is "the first holy day of all"and the foundation and core of the whole litur-gical year" (Constitution on the Liturgy, #106),the most important passages of Scripture are

presented in the Sunday lectionary. The week-day lectionary complements the Sunday lection-

    Scripture

Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the

earth, making it fertile and fruitful, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; (Isaiah55:10a,11a)

You have visited the land and watered it; greatly have you enriched it. (Psalm 65:10) For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; (Romans 8:19)

But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit andyields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold." (Matthew 13:23)

    Reflection

How is Gods word spread on Earth?

How is the Earth enriched by those who hears and understand it?

How are you able to hear the Word of God and act on it?

How are you called to evangelize yourself, your family, your community, and your world?

More pressing than ever are the motives for evangelization. One thinks of that day on which Jesus saw thepeople in need of food and responded by telling his apostles, "There is no need for them to go away; give themsome food yourselves" (Mt 14:16). He says the same thing to us who have been made rich by his gifts of grace,

truth, and eternal life. All around us people are starving for faith and love, for hope and meaning in their lives.Because the Lord Jesus has done so much for us, we cannot refuse to share the gifts we have been given.Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Go and Make Disciples, Forward to the Tenth Anniversary Edition, UnitedStates Conference of Catholic Bishops, Washington DC, 2001. the major seasons or to highlight key doctrinessuch as the Eucharist. In addition to a Gospel reading, each SundayEucharist has two other readings. The first read-ing is usually taken from the Old Testament andis selected in the light of the theme of the Gos-

pel to be read on that Sunday. The second read-ing is taken from the letters of Paul or one of

the other writings of the New Testament. Likethe Gospels, these books are read semi-continuously and are selected so that over thecourse of the three-year cycle we have a taste of

    each of the books of the New Testament. R e t r i e v e d f r o m h t t p : / /

A Study on the Book of 2 Timothy.

The book of 2 Timothy was written by the Apostle Paul during his final Roman imprisonment. It was writteno Timothy, Paul's son in the faith and leader of the church in Ephesus. By the tone in his letter, it appearshat Timothy struggled amidst not only the persecution that was closing in on the church in Ephesus, but also

opposition from rebellious members within the church. It is also apparent that Paul was nearing the end ofhis battle as well. Paul;'s plea for Timothy to come to him quickly perhaps was for the benefit of both, a finalspiritual renewal for Timothy and a final comfort for Paul before his death.

Paul knew that he had reached the end of his life. He said, For I am already being poured out as a drinkoffering, and the time of my departure is at hand. (4:6) Sadly, everyone had abandoned him at that point, except Luke. And Timothy was to bring Mark with him when he came. No one else stood with Paul, and itgrieved him. Many had left the faith and still others had continually opposed him from the beginning. De-mas, Hymenaeus, Philetus and Alexander the coppersmith are among those listed as defectors. Yet evenhough he was alone, Paul still stood as a warrior, convinced that God was going to continue to deliver him

from every evil work. Paul's heart longed for Timothy to share that same steadfastness in the midst of thespiritual upheaval in Ephesus.

Timothy came from a long line of believers. His grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice, were both Chris-ians. They passed down their spiritual heritage to Timothy, who embraced the faith with incredible tenacity.

But it seemed that much of the dissention that was surfacing in Ephesus was becoming overwhelming for theyoung leader. By Paul's exhortations, Timothy may have doubted his calling, or doubted his ability to keepspiritual order in the church.

There were several strong charges throughout Paul's second letter, all intended to ignite Timothy's faith. Stirup the gift. Do not be ashamed. Hold fast. Be strong. Endure hardship. Consider. Remember. Be diligent.Continue. Preach the Word! Be ready. Convince. Rebuke. Exhort. Be watchful. Endure afflictions. Do thework of an evangelist. Fulfill your ministry. Paul had intense confidence in Timothy's ability to lead. He alsooved Timothy like a son, and had labored long and hard to bring Timothy into his calling as a spiritualeader. Paul was not about to let the enemy take out the one who had been chosen as his successor. Not with-

    out a fight.

There were other instructions that Paul gave in his second letter. It is not clear whether they were for Timo-hy personally, or simply general instructions that were to be passed down to the believers in the church. But

what is clear is the potential danger that was finding its home among God's people. Flee youthful lusts. Pur-sue righteousness. Avoid disputes. The enemy was at work in Ephesus, undermining the foundation that Paulhad laid in Jesus Christ. It was as if, in Paul's absence, the believers in Ephesus were forsaking the purity ofheir faith, like the Israelites with the golden calf. Moses had left Aaron in charge, but his authority was not

effective enough to prevent the rebellious children of Israel from straying completely.

Paul encouraged Timothy to stand in the face of the deadly opposition. He reminded Timothy of the gospel'seffectiveness and vitality despite attacks of the enemy. Paul himself had experienced persecution, affliction, beatings, imprisonment, ridicule, and more for the sake of preaching the gospel. But by Paul's own words, the Word of God is not chained. (2:9) God' Word prevailed, and so would Timothy if he stood his groundand looked to God for comfort and strength. He was to follow Paul's example in love, perseverance and long-suffering if he was going to make it spiritually.
