Historia

En 1994 fue creada esta tipografía por el diseñador Matthew Carter para la compañía Microsoft con el fin de mostrarla en pantalla. Su función es generar legibilidad en el usuario y mantener su forma aún en bajas resoluciones (Hinting). Fue optimizada por Tom Rickner de Monotype y se caracteriza por sus curvas y diagonales meticulosamen-te pensadas para mostrar pixeles claros sin importar el tamaño de la fuente. Verdana Posee un espaciado impor-tante que resalta a cada carácter, incluyendo la “I”, “J”, L” ó “i”, caracteres considerados como los más confusos. Sin embargo esta tipografía no sólo es utilizada en la pantalla, también ha sido importante en el ámbito impre-so, ya que funciona como una sans serif agradable a la vista y de buena legibilidad, incluso en grandes tamaños.
Fue Publicada 2 años después y hace parte del paquete de fuentes web disponible en internet de forma gratuita. Verdana se instala predeterminadamente en todo sistema operativo de Mac y Windows y contiene todos los caracte-res existentes.

En el año 2010 la compañía Ikea cambio su imagen corporati-va. Rótulos, catálogos, precios, etc, pasaron de ser escritos con la tipografía futura a la tipografía verdana ya que esta última contiene caracteres asiáticos que la tipografía pasada no permitía usar.
Verdanacaracterísticas
Verdana es la cuarta tipografía más utilizada entre las 100 más usadas en internet, según webmasterBlogs.
El contraste del trazo es de tipo suave, es decir, no existe casi diferen-cia de calibres dentro de la fuente.
La caja alta es más pequeña que las ascendentes de la tipografía.
Los blancos internos de la tipografía y espacios entre carácter son espaciosos.
Excelente legibilidad en tamaños pequeños. A diferencia de la arial conserva una estética mayor en su variación en bold.
Tahoma es una fuente tipográfica que está relacionada con la verdana, tanto que es también conocida como verdana narrow.
La verdana bold fue diseñada para conservar el peso en tamaños pequeños, además de su legibilidad.
Posee características leves de tipografía humanista.
Verdana es una tipografía completa; contiene todos los caracteres además de los asiáticos.
