The parents and the SBS members just loved this part of the show. We even had a student playing his handmade inどstrument, using a piece of galvanized pipe as a slide. Very innovative!
After the stuどdents played, Mick Martin was given a commendation and gifted with his own perどsonally enどgraved perどformance stool for his years of volどunteering and serving as the main artist/
clinician of the SBS BITS Program.
A few more raffle prizes were given out, then it was on to the main act with PAUL OSCHER. Paul sat on his stool and played his guiど
tar and neck harmonica and “stomped his foot” for rhythm. He then moved to the keyboard and perどformed many of his hits. Between songs he talked about his life playing on the road, and meeting and playどing with the greats. And there were many stories to
tell, as Paul joined his first touring band at age 15, and by 17 was playing with Muddy Waters in juke joints and concert halls of the world, inspiring a generation of blues harp players, including Rick Estrin, Jerry Portどnoy, Paul DeLay, William Clark, and our own Mick Martin. Paul quit music in the 1980’s but could not stay away. He came back in 1992, and has been nominated for numerどous awards since then.
It was a great evening, sitting along our own Sacramento River, listening not only to one of the great bluesどmen of our time but also hearing our own local playどers. A GREAT JOB by Liz Walker, Cynthia Jaynes and the BITS Committee for putting on this event. Thanks to all our clinicians for preparing the stuどdents for musical success. And we did make some money, so we can match grants for our wonderful Blues in the Schools program for another year. We
give our Clinicians lots of love, but they like to get paid, too! So Thank YOU for supporting our programs..

(7/10) with Walter Trout, Guy Davis and ‘the women’: Lydia Pence, Annie Sampson, Lara Price & Dana Moret and comどing in August, the Foothills Blues Festival in Loma Rica and the Northern California Blues Festival in Auburn! I’m pleased to say the blues scene is doing very well ど thanks to you! I’ve attempted to convey this before: we are very fortunate to have the club owners, promoters and festivals that continue to bring topどnotch blues to our area. The Sacramento Blues Society continues to look for volどunteers to help with our events and fundraisers. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us at memberど[email protected] . Thanks again for your continued support of the Sacraどmento Blues Society, the Blues In The Schools Program, the benefits, the local clubs, the festivals and the wonderどful blues musicians in our area. As always, “Save me a seat”, Willie Brown
Greetings Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) members and blues enthusiasts. Wow! Where to begin? I’ll try to keep this short. Here we are in June/July already! The wet April/May of 2010 is now beどhind us and the festival season is upon us. Believe me, this is
absolutely better than “Memphis in May” or as some of us that were there remember ど “Memphis in Mud”. A “BIG” congratulation goes out to our local blues artists that shone brightly at the 2010 Blues Music Awards! Speどcifically Tommy Castro & Joe Louis Walker ど they brought home the entertainer & band of the year (Tommy Castro) and blues album of the year (Joe Louis Walker). Over the next few months there are some great local fesどtivals to check out in the area: the Coloma Blues Live! (6/5) with Robert Cray, Charlie Musselwhite, Coco Montoya, Laurie Morvan & Shane Dwight ど the Monterey Bay Blues Festival (6/25 thru 6/27) featuring our hot young harp player Kyle Rowland along with 2010 “BB King Entertainer of the Year” Tommy Castro, Candye Kane w/Laura Chavez, Sista Monica, Rory Block, Ruthie Foster and so many more ど the Gold Country Blues Festival in Auburn

Whew! The BITS benefit on May 7th was a huge success. Lots of folks, good food and fantastic music down on the river. But most of all the success was evident in the performance of the young bluesどmen and women who are carrying the torch forward. They came to perform and did. From cool song choices to nickどnames like Pancake and Porkchop, to cool duds, they had a “gig” and it was
great fun. Big thanks to Chris and his crew at Swabbies. They did a fantastic job of keeping everybody fed and hyどdrated.
Next up is a day road trip to the Monterey Blues Festival on June 26th. We’re putting together a group of 20 to bus down in time to support our own Kyle Rowland. We’ll be heading out of town very early in the morning as he’s on at 11 a.m. and maybe, probably, not real sure right now,

be home by midnight. We’ve got discounts on day festiどval tickets and are just now firming up the transportation arrangements. There’s only a few slots left on the list so if you want to go you need to let me know ASAP ([email protected]).
The next event will be our “Diva” show. I’m looking into another outdoor venue and lining up the talent. Nothing is firm as of this publication but it will be this summer. Look for future announcements.
I’d like to thank all those volunteers who came out to help at the Swabbies event. It’s wonderful to have the help. The Events committee is actively seeking particiどpants to help with the organizing and planning of the soどciety’s activities. Is there something you’d like to see happen? The committee meetings are held on the first Thursday evening of the month. Come on out and have a voice in what your blues society is up to.

cock, Faytha Coble, the SBS Board of Directors, and everyone who came out to support BITS. We’re about to close out the 09/10 school year with a few more performどances in Yolo and Sacramento area schools. Presentations have been given for the Sacramento County Ofどfice of Education Court and Community Schools program and the songwriting contest was completed. The winning songs will be put to music and performed before the Sacどramento County Board of Education on Friday, June 4, 2010. The after school guitar and bass lessons have ended for the year and I must give a shout out to our BITS teachers, Jimmy Pailer, Lew Fratis and Joe Lev. The kids are becoming strong blues players and really appreciate the time and attention you’ve given them. I also want to acknowledge and thank the two Sacramento school disどtrict music teachers who have championed our program at their school sites and have been constant supporters of our young musicians, Steve Boettner of Rosemont High and John Ousley of West Campus have been wonderful partners with the Sacramento Blues Society and truly care about the BITS program.

The Paul Oscher Benefit, held at Swabbies on May 7, 2010, was a success on many levels. It was a beautiful spring evening on the river and the air was alive with excitement for many people – for many different reasons. Young muどsicians were there to connect with their Blues mentors and heroes, and show each other their mad blues skills. Older Blues fans were there to see Paul Oscher, remembering when he played the Sound Factory with Muddy Waters back in the late 60’s. Families were there to support their young musicians and experience the joy and excitement of watching their kids perform onstage. Our local Blues Pros came to share their love of the music and help pass it down to the new generation, which is a beautiful thing to see! The Sacramento Blues Society Board of Directors members were there to party down, of course ど and honor and commemorate Mick Martin for his dedication and contribution to the Blues In The Schools program. Aside from all the groovy connections and fabulous music, we even made a bit of cash! Thanks to Liz Walker, Dave Alど

Know of an All-ages Blues Jam? Blues In The Schools has been going strong for the past six years and there are more and more young Blues players – all looking for places to play. We are getting frequent reどquests for a list of allどages jams and music venues open to those under 21 years old. The BITS Committee would like to know of any and all places for young musicians to pracどtice, play and enjoy music. If you know of a venue or facilどity that welcomes our young talent, please let us know via [email protected] or by calling Cynthia at 916ど202ど5075. We plan to post this list on the sacblues.com website so anyone can find and support those that support our youth!
A Plea to Volunteers We are using email to notify volunteers of upcoming events. Some of you have indicated that you are interested in Volunteering but we don't have an email address for you. If you would like to receive emails about Volunteer Opportunities please send your email address to [email protected] and I will add you to the list. The Torch Club/Sacramento, Sacraどmento/The Torch Club: the two are synonymous in the Capitol City. In business 40 years, Torch Club paどtrons have come to call this estabどlishment their “home away from home”. Jimmy Lee, long time and now retired bartender, came to the party and I felt my heart swell. I think all of us have told him a story or two across that bar throughout the years. The atmosど
phere, guests and local professional musicians make it all that, as well as, the place to be any day or night of the week. On April 10, 2010 the Torch Club celebrated it’s 10th Anどniversary at the 15th and I Street location in the heart of downtown Sacramento. Marina Texeira, Manager/Owner of the club, took over the family run business a few years ago after her father and great friend to travelers from everywhere, Ron Texeira, passed on. It was tough emoどtionally for Marina, his precious daughter, to stand up to the plate and take over the family business. If you know Marina, it was never an option, it was a commitment.
To celebrate such an occasion, band members that have played at the Torch Club over the years gathered “en masse” . I was amazed at the number and names of those who came to say “Thank God the Torch Club survived it all so we could have somewhere to go for the good and bad times, anytime. “ Marina got up and said a few words, along with Jimmy, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Then the party really started and it was on. Bands who came to play in honor of the house were Leo Bootz and Southside Shufどfle, The Beer Dawgs, The Lewmenators, The Chrome Adどdicts featuring Johnny Guitar Knox, Jimmy Pailer Band and Hollywood Texas,. It was the BEST party……and I suppose that was because of all of you. If I had a party I’d want every one of you wonderful blues’n friends there or it just wouldn’t be right ………. May The Torch burn forever in our hearts, we love you baby!

The Torch Club 10th Anniversary Party - By Deborah Gregory
Easter Sunday at Po’ Boyz & the Torch Linda McShane
April 4th, Easter Sunday I caught John Lee Hooker Jr at Po Boyz – what a show that turned out to be – John Lee has the voice, the showmanship, & the back up band so the dance floor was full for the faster numbers and for the slower blues we had a couple providing us with their rendition of dancing like the stars which was very entertaining. John Lee sang a good variety of blues and bluesy/soul and even a couple of songs by his famous dad – it was all good on a rainy Easter Sunday and next stop was the Torch Club to catch Johnny Guitar Knox with Dave Croall & the Soothers ど Ok I don’t really want to write when I’m having such a goodtime dancing and listening to the blues but I have to say that Johnny Guitar Knox and the band inspired me! They start out slow and easy and an hour later they are bluesin’ (not ‘rockin’ per Ratどaどtat Pat) the house! When Johnny plays “The Sky is Cryin” on his daddy’s guitar – it’s the real deal and if you haven’t heard them lately you are missing out! You can catch some of these guys jammin’ on Sunday afternoons
there, but if you catch them as a band that has been playin’ together for several years, you’re in for a treat! Johnny Guitar Knox , Pat Balcolm, Dave Croall, Kenny Marquese, & Aaron King played bass in place of Jack Crownover who was snowed in somewhere in the foothills – on Easter Sunday! The weather outside may be ‘frightful’ but we’re inside enjoying the blues!

From Bo Ely’s Experience & camera
I arrived at the Marriott Hotel across the street from the Memphis Convention Center on the afternoon of May 5th. On May 6th the convention center would be host to the 31
st Blues Music Awards which I had been eagerly awaitどing! The hotel lobby was filled with artists and blues fans buzzどing with conversation in anticipation of the BMA’s. I had just enough time to freshen up in my room and head downstairs to the Trolley Bar where Dorothy Hill and the Golden Gate Blues Society were hosting a 5:00pm mixer to welcome everyone. After meeting up with friends and consuming a few libations our party moved to the sideどwalk to catch a quick trolley ride to Beale Street. Just as we arrived at the trolley station in front of the Marriott
we were approached by a Limo offering a ride to our destination. The small $2 per person charge was well worth the price to start our adventures in style! Arriving on Beale Street we knew that we had two great choices to choose from. Tommy Castro and his band were performing at BB
King’s and Nick Moss and the Flip Tops were hosting a celebrity jam session at Rum Boogie’s. Both of these shows were awesome with countless celebrities joining both performances including talents like Charlie Musselwhite, Pinetop Perkins, Janiva Magness, Ronnie Brooks, Curtis Salgado, and the list went on. I wore my shoes out running from club to club tryどing not to miss too much. All of this was taking place while back at the hotel a private Hall Of Fame Induction
Ceremony was in sesどsion attended by the artists and charter members of the Blues Foundation. Darn! My name was not anywhere on that list! Thursday, May 6
th started with a Yellow Dog Records lunch showcase with Fiona Boyes and Eden Brent accompanied by Colin Linden. Both of their perどformances were incredible! This took place at the Center for Southern Folklore. At the same time a luncheon was taking place at the Majestic Grille just a little further down on Main Street. Buddy Guy was autographing Blues Music Awards posters for everyone that attended this luncheon. Then came the 31st Blues Music Awards. The winners were: 1. The Blues Foundation really knows how to host a memorable event. My favorite highlights of the evening were Rick Estrin and the Nightcats performance and Bonどnie Raitt’s Lifetime Achievement presentation to Buddy Guy, and the tear inspiring tribute to the blues greats that passed away in 2010 including our own Big John Evans. The night started with a 5:30pm Cocktail Reception and did not end until 1:30am, but the time flew by too quickly for me. Back at the front of the hotel the party continued with many fans and artists comparing notes and stories
from the excitどing night. Friday May 7th started with a Blues Foundaどtion Fundraiser at Alfred’s on Beale Street that was headどlined by 2010 BMA winner Louisiana Red and Little Vicどtor’s Juke Joint and friends
which included Rick Estrin and Kid Andersen that cultiどvated into one incredible show. Immediately after this show we all headed to the Gus Cannon Note Unveiling in front of the Old Daisy Theater The Note to join the many others along Beale Street was long over due for this legend of the jug bands. history of jug bands and Gus Cannon’s contributions to these early blues bands. Attending this event were Gus Cannon’s family, friends, and fans. From the Old Daisy Theater we returned to Rum Boogie’s for a Blind Raccoon/
Earwig Music Showcase that featured Andy Cohen, Jimmy Warren Band, Tim Woods, Phil Gates, Chris James & Patrick Rynn, and Dave Fields & Friends that included 2009 BMA winner Billy Gibson, JT Lauritsen, and young harmonica wizard Jay Gaunt. Real stand outs from this showcase for me were Tim Woods who has a Tribute CD just out with a list of sixteen special guests that include such heavyweights as Honey Boy Edwards, John Primer, and Bob Stroger just to name a few. Tim Woods is a very talented new artist himself then add all of these great artists and you have a winner of a CD! The other performer that blew me completely away was Phil Gates a Chicago transplant that now calls LA home. His new CD “Addicted To The Blues” with it’s sassy funk groove will have your feet shuffling out to the dance floor before you know what hit you. Saturday came too soon and I left Memphis rememberどing all of fantastic music, great food, and wonderful peoどple that I had encountered on this trip! I will Be Back!

A Memorial And Celebration of Life—In Remembrance of Debbie Rowland
Deborah Gregory—Photos by Vj Anderson
On January 31, 2010 at the Capitol City Hotel Ballroom, hundreds of blues lovers gathered to celebrate the life of Debどbie Rowland, Kyle Rowどland’s Mom. Debbie Rowどland loved her son and did everything possible to ensure that he could folどlow his dreams playing harmonica and singing the blues. At such a young age, she could not have known that Kyle
would climb to the top, she only knew that she wanted her son to realize his dreams. Debbie was always there by Kyle’s side, like a GREAT mom should be, balancing school events and the Sacramento Blues Society, who embraced her son as if he belonged to them all.
Kyle opened the show with a few words of love for his Mom and dedicated it to her. We all shed a tear at the strength and
love of a young son who must carry on without the most signifiどcant woman in his young life. Then the ce lebrat ion started with
music by Linda Bracaどmonte with Dana Moret, Gary Menどdoza with Paris Clayton and Tess Honn, Jeff W a t s o n Band with Special Guest Kenny Neal. Mr. Kyle Rowland got up and played with them as if the sun in his life were still shining. I believe I speak for us all when I say that Kyle is a young man who will go far with his great musical talどent, holding his Mom in his heart, and beどlieving that this world is a better place beどcause Debbie Rowどland gave him everyどthing he needed to go on, including his greatest supporter and Dad, Curtis Rowどland. Heartfelt love and appreciation to the Rowland’s for their contribution to the Sacramento Blues Society and Blues In The Schools Program. Our thanks to the many local professional musicians who came out to show love and s u p p o r t for Kyle and Curtis. We would also like to acknowlどedge that through the generosity of the Blues comどmunity, the Rowland Family was able to cover the funeral expenses for our beloved Debbie Rowland.

April 30, 2010 ど I haven’t been to Louie’s since the Low Down Dirty Dogs played for my birthday party in January. Since moving to Granite Bay travel south, after work, is a challenge; however, when the master singer, songwriter, musician and producer is available and more than willing to make my night, how can I refuse. On one such Wednesday, April 28th to be exact, I ventured out of my new sector to experience Steve Boutt‘e and friends. The jam band is Steve on drums and vocals (oh my), Scream‘n Dave Wright guitar and vocals, Marty Holland on bass, and Jeff Lucas, also lead guitar and vocals. I’m always happy to know Chris Fraire, bass player virtuoso and dear friend is in the house. In case I want to sing my signature song, I can count on my bass man. Leo Bootz made an appearance and Randy Carey made my evening singing a Peaceful Easy Feeling by the Eagles, accompanied by Mr. Boutt‘e who put another drummer
up and picked up a guitar. The man is magic with any instrument. I have never seen anything like it. Watch him drum, listen to him play and sing, then become a believer. When you love the music and the dance like I do (and you all know me pretty well) you have to go to Louie’s for Steve Boutt‘e‘s Jam. They made me dance, what could I do? Jam starts at 8.
