TOPiAMASTER OF ARCHITECTURE -GUD(DISTINCTION) BARTLETT SCHOOL OF
ARCHITECTURE, UCL, LONDON - 2012
Hong Kong as we now know it, was created in 1841 as a utopian
experiment in colonisation. Its population is due to rise by almost
1million to more than 8 million people by 2025, but who will these
people be and where will they live in an already teeming
archipelago?
Through an interwoven process of socio-eco-nomic research and
theoretical design I am speculating on a multi-faceted version of
Hong Kongs future over the next 35 years, which is part-collage,
part-prediction and part-provo-cation.
Four islands emerge in anticipation of Hong Kongs full
re-integration with China in 2047. Each island is an alternate
utopia expressing its own ideology and attracting different
demo-graphics who have varying expectationsof utopian life. Over
the course of 35 years the islands emergence in this vibrant new
area of the Pearl River Delta pulls and repels each others
inhabitants, creating a complex dynamic of movement, attraction and
inter-dependence.

EAST COAST STATION NETWORK (UK)FOR FLETCHER PRIEST ARCHITECTS
(2013)
I worked as Project Architect representing Fletcher priest as
part of a larger multi-dis-ciplinary team investigating
opportunites associated with the East Coast Railway Sta-tion
network, spanning from Londons Kings Cross station to Dunbar
Station in Scotland.
The team comprised of KPMG, Buro Happold, London Continental
Railways and Chase estate agents. Our role was to look beyond the
existing boundaries of ownership for the railway stations and their
surroundings and begin to create proposals which would create value
from the latent potential intrinsic to the connection between the
cities and towns in which the stations operated.
The aspiration was to create a new model for the railway station
and how it operates on a number of scales, from ticket barrier
location to the greater connection to the country.

WOODBERRY DOWN MASTERPLANHACKNEY, LONDON, 2013FOR FLETCHER
PRIEST ARCHITECTS project status: planning 2013project cost: approx
400mproject size: approx. 4,500,000sq ft
I worked as Architect/Urban Designer on the conceptual design
and preparation of the planning application for the complete
redevel-opment of the Woodberry Down council es-tate in the north
London borough of Hackney.
I was involved directly in all client and plan-ning meetings,
which in itself was an in-teresting experience as one of the
clients (Hackney Council) was also the planning authority
adjudicating on the application.
The redevelopment of the estate was planned to be incremental
over the course of 25 years and comprised ofof approx. 4,000 new
homes and associated community facilities. This allowed the
existing post WW2 housing blocks to be replaced sequentially in
phases.

ARCHITECTSproject status: planning 2010project cost: approx.

I worked as Project Architect on the con-ceptual design and
preparation of the plan-ning application for a masterplan for this
new area of Dublins Northside Docklands
I had been working in collaboration with Wilkonson Eyre, Gross
Max and West 8.The Spencer Dock Masterplan encompasses a built area
of 4,250,000sqm of mixed-use development . A quantum of development
unprecedented in Dublin on a site of this size.
The design challenge was to incorpo-rate the large area required
into a series of large blocks, which addressed both the existing
site conditions and the new pub-lic realm through a complex
sculpting .
This was an enlightening experience in terms of political will
and influence, being at the height of Irelands Celtic Tiger
boom.

SHAY CLEARY ARCHITECTSproject status: tender stage 2009project
cost: approx. 32mproject size: approx. 115,000sq ft
I worked as an Assistant/Project Architect as part of a two man
team from competition winning stage, through a protracted and
contentious planning process to tender issue, before the project
was put on hold indefinitely in 2009. I was ever-present at all
stages of the design, client presentation and planning consulation
process.
The project represents an innovative approach in formal and
architectural terms to a very complex urban condition. The form of
the building is highly responsive to its surround-ings, being
broken into four sculpted elements which vary in height and shape
according to the site condition. They are connected by a generous
single storey foyer space which provides entrance and communal
facilities for the occupants.

ARCHITECTSproject status: granted planningproject cost: approx.

I worked as Assistant/Lead Architect over the course of 5 years
on the design devel-opment of this important city block, linking
two major public spaces in central Dublin.
The location of the block at the edge St. Ste-phens Green,
occupying a pivotal position at the southern end of the principal
civic route, brought much attention and scruti-ny to the design
proposals over the course of 5 years. During this time i was
involved in no fewer than 10 separate proposals for the site for
the clients Treasury Holdings.
I was involved at all stages in this protracted design
development and planning process, at-tending many meetings with
Dublin City Council.

ALTO VETRO RESIDENTIAL TOWER, DUBLIN 2 - (2006-2008)FOR SHAY
CLEARY ARCHITECTSproject status: constructed March 2008project
cost: approx. 11.5mproject size: approx. 26,000sq ft
I worked on this project as an assistant Archi-tect during its
construction phase from the periods of August 2006 to February
2008,working within a team delvering packages of information during
a tight construction period.
The building, which won an RIBA Interna-tional award and an AAI
award in 2009, is a sixteen storey glazed tower. It addresses a
bridge to the north and a stone linear space to the south which
connects to the major public space of Grand Canal Square. The
building form is that of a pristine glazed rectangularfree standing
object. Floors are expressed by a thin stone band at each
level.
The architectural language of the scheme is consciously neutral
and non expressive of specific function or spatial arrangement in
the interest of a singular architectural expression and
presence. The faade of the building while having a simple formal
clarity has a complexity through the overlaying of these various
static and moving elements creating an ever chang-ing lightbox.

The sports and community centre provide facilities for the wider
area of Pope John Paul II Park, Dublin. The main entrance faces the
playing pitches, and the entrance forecourt is an extension of the
path circulating the park. The main hall is a standard single
sports hall suitable for basketball, indoor soccer, badmi-ton and
volleyball. Other accomodation on the ground floor includes a dance

Architect on several community building in Dublin. My role on this
project was primarily as a model maker resolv-ing design details
through models at various scales.
The building was part of a wider regeneration of the Liberties
area of central Dublin. It was designed to be as flexible as
possible accom-modating two separate community groups, however the
expression of the various func-tions are deliberately supressed to
emphasise the building as a single large house or villa. The deep
plan and compact form have been manipulated in section so that all
the main activity spaces enjoy light from at least two
directions.

project was primarily as a model maker resolv-ing design details
through models at various scales.
This building is located in the rapidly expand-ing suburban area
of Tallaght in west Dublin. The brief was very challenging
accomodating the incongruous functions of a creche, a drug
rehabilitation clinic and housing for the elderly. Despite the
disparate functions a single building form with a layered
functioning was proposed. The project is the first step in a series
of new community buildings.

I worked as Assistant Architect on the con-ceptual design and
preparation of the plan-ning application for this 150m tower as
part of the newly completed National Con-vention Centre in Dublins
Spencer Dock. I was also involved in several client and
pre-planning meetings for this high-ly contentious structure, which
would have become Dublins tallest building.
The tower was characterised by a highly complex double-skinned
facade. An ever-changing inner envelope of copper-clad screens sat
behind anexternal skin of low-iron glazing con-trolled by a
building management system.
The tower occupied a key location in the regeneration of Spencer
Dock, as it addressed the new linear park to the West and Mayor
street to the North.I had similtaneously been working as lead
de-signer on a revised Masterplan for Spencer Dock

CAFE OTO PROJECT SPACE HACKNEY, LONDON - 2013WITH ASSEMBLE
ARCHITECTSproject status: constructed July 2013project cost:
approx. 5,000project size: approx. 600sq ft
I worked on this project in collaboration with Assemble
Architects ( a young collective of urban architects from London).
The brief was for a small project and performance space for
experiemntal music and art attached to the existing Cafe OTO in
Dalston, Hackney.
The small building was site-specific and took approximately 5
weeks to construct, entirely from volonteer labour. Partly funded
by the Barbican, it is seen as the first stage in a sequence of new
experimental spaces.
The scarce resources determined the form of the building in many
respects. The roof was of a simple timber truss construction. The
walls and buttresses made from compressed, sand-filled rice bags.
Render comprising of rubble and pebbles found onsite wrap the base
of the structure, making it appear as though it emanates from the
ground.

THE SPECTACLE (LYCRA WALL) UCD (2004-2005) BArch ARCHITECTURAL
THESISproject status: temporary pavillion 2005project cost: approx.
100project size: approx. 80sq ft
This project jointly won the Bruce Shortt memorial prize for the
best studio project of all 5 academic years at UCD in 2005
It was a temporary entrance pavillion which acted as a mediator
between inside and out and created a ceremony to the entrance.
Con-structed from lycra and timber, it attached onto the existing
doors of the workshop, creating a tenuous object responsive to the
opening mechanism of the industrial doors.
My Architectural Thesis in 2005 was heavily indebted to research
exploring the theme of The Spectacle as conceptualised by Jean
Baudrillard. The thesis focused on the historical trajectory of
shopping, the rise of the depart-ment store and the democratisation
of luxury.
The overall design project spanned mul-tiple scales, from urban
conceptual down to tactile installation. This pavillion be-ing an
object of desire in the contin-uous stream of commodity
fetishism.
