INVITATION
This is a very exciting event for PATS that will bring together health professionals from many African countries to address the challenges for child and adult lung health on the continent. Respiratory disease is a major cause of death, disability and morbidity in Africa, where there is a double burden of infectious diseases including pneumonia or tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The congress will offer the opportunity to critically discuss these challenges and to work together to strengthen initiatives to improve care, build capacity, strengthen research, training and advocacy for better lung health in Africa. We look forward to your participation!

Dear friends and colleagues,
It is truly my honour to welcome you all to the 2nd Biennial Pan African Thoracic Society Congress in our beautiful city of Durban, South Africa. The theme for our congress is “Siza iAfrika iphefumule: Help Africa Breathe” . This is reflected in our focus on the Triple threat of disease which includes: communicable diseases, non-communicable disease and globalization and their impact on lung health on the African continent.
After our first very successful congress in Nairobi, Kenya under the leadership of Professor Joseph Alouch, we hope to expand our reach and grow our society during this congress. The Pan African Thoracic Society seeks to be the premier society that brings together all Thoracic Societies in Africa under one umbrella, to improve our advocacy role and share locally relevant research and best practices across the African continent. To this aim we have an exciting program which has pre-congress skills building workshops on exciting topics which include: thoracic imaging, spirometry, paediatric tuberculosis, pollution and exposures/occupational lung disease and lung health research.
Alongside the program which has several plenaries by African and International experts on adult and paediatric as well as thoracic surgery topics. An innovation for the congress will also be introduction of French sessions embedded in the general program. We will also have a congress App with interactive sessions and a congress Facebook site for colleagues to post their comments.
Our sincere thanks for the support that was extended to PATS by the following societies: European Respiratory Society, American Thoracic Society, South African Thoracic Society, Federation of International Societies, The Union of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to our excellent scientific committee both international and local, who have made a great contribution and without whom this would not be possible and for designing a fantastic and exciting program.
I hope that you will not only enjoy the fantastic program on offer, but will also enjoy our beautiful warm city of Durban, the home of uShaka!
