Quarterback Tom Brady was unable to register his 30th career comeback when the New York Jets stopped two Patriots drives in the final five minutes to gain a 16-9 victory. It marked the Jets first win against the Patriots at the Meadowlands since the 2000 season.

Down 16-9, the Patriots started a drive at their own 20-yard line with 5:01 remaining. After failing to convert a third-and-one situation from their own 34-yard line, the Patriots were forced to punt. The New England defense held the Jets on the ensuing series and got the ball back at the 10-yard line with 1:48 left to play and a chance to send the game into overtime. The Jets’ defense knocked away Brady’s fourth-down pass to WR Joey Galloway, and the Jets were able run off the last minute to seal the victory.

Cornerback Leigh Bodden had three of QB Mark Sanchez’s four interceptions, including one that he returned 53 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. The Patriots held the Jets to just two first downs and 34 net yards while building a 24-7 halftime lead. The Jets scored their first half touchdown on a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown. There were plenty of offensive stars for New England. QB Tom Brady completed 28-of-41 passes for 310 yards, his fifth straight 300-yard game. WR Wes Welker set career highs with 15 receptions for 192 yards. Welker had eight receptions for 139 yards in the first half. And RB Laurence Maroney ran for two touchdowns, his fifth consecutive game with at least one touchdown.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN 2010 RANDY MOSS

Moss is in sixth place on the NFL’s all-time receiving yards list with 14,524 yards and needs 685 receiving yards in 2010 to move into second place all-time, behind Jerry Rice (22,895). He needs 476 receiving yards to become the fourth player in NFL history with 15,000 receiving yards. Jerry Rice (22,895), Isaac Bruce (15,208) and Terrell Owens (15,004) are the only three other players to accomplish the feat.

Moss is 10th place on the NFL’s all-time list for receptions with 931. He needs 69 receptions to become just the seventh player in NFL history with 1,000 career receptions.

Moss is in fourth place in NFL history with 149 overall touchdowns. He needs one more touchdown to become the fourth player in NFL history with at least 150 touchdowns. He needs two to join Jerry Rice (197) as the only players to top 150 touchdown catches.

Moss has recorded 1,000 receiving yards in a season 10 times in his 12-year career. Moss can join Jerry Rice (14) as the only players in NFL history with 11 seasons with 1,000 receiving yards.

TOM BRADY Brady is 30th on the NFL’S all-time passing yard list with 31,102 yards. He needs 2,360 yards to move into the top 20.

Brady has 98 wins and needs two wins to become the 11th NFL QB to reach 100 wins.

QB Tom Brady completed three touchdown passes, including two to WR Wes Welker. The Patriots dominance was complete as they scored on a 59-yard interception return by LB Gary Guyton and a 97-yard kickoff return by WR Brandon Tate. New England took command early, taking a 24-3 halftime lead that was expanded to 31-3 when Tate returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. All five of New England’s first half drives were scoring threats with two touchdowns, a field goal and two missed field goals. Brady ended a 5-play, 72-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown pass to Welker. A 45-yard pass play from Brady to rookie TE Aaron Hernandez helped put the Patriots in scoring position. After stopping the Bengals on three straight plays on the next series, a 24-yard run by RB Fred Taylor helped set up a 32-yard field goal for a 10-0 first quarter lead. After failing to take advantage of a fumble that positioned the Patriots at the Cincinnati 28-yard line with a missed field goal, the Patriots responded on their next drive with a 10-play, 80-yard drive that was culminated with a 4-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Welker for a 17-0 lead. On Cincinnati’s ensuing drive, Guyton picked off a QB Carson palmer pass and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown to put New England in front, 24-0. Cincinnati kicked a 54-yard field goal before the end of the half for a 24-3 Patriots advantage. Tate, the NCAA record holder in combined kick and punt return yards, took the second half kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to expand the Patriots lead to 31-3. Cincinnati cut the lead to 31-17 when Palmer connected on two touchdown passes in the third quarter. Then Brady took control again, engineering a 14-play, 81-yard drive that ended in a 1-yard touchdown pass to rookie TE Rob Gronkowski for a 38-17 lead early in the fourth quarter. Brady completed 25 of 35 passes for 258 yards with three touchdowns, while Welker caught 8 passes for 64 yards with two touchdowns. Taylor averaged 5.1-yards per carry on 14 attempts for 71 yards.

GOOD AT HOME The Patriots improved to a perfect 9-0 at Gillette Stadium in home openers. New England has won its home opener in each season since moving into Gillette Stadium in 2002 and has won 14 of its last 16 home openers overall. The Patriots have also won seven straight times on Kickoff Weekend. New England is now 60-13 (.822) all-time at Gillette Stadium (including playoffs, the best home record in the NFL since the facility opened in 2002.

NEW FACES Of the 16 new Patriots on the 53-man opening day roster in 2010, 11 saw action in their first regular-season game as a member of the Patriots. Of that group, six players were 2010 draft picks. WELKER HAS TWO TDS, TYING CAREER HIGH Wes Welker tied his single-game career high with his fourth two-touchdown game after a 9-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter and a 4-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. Welker also had two touchdown receptions in games at Miami (10/21/07), at Dallas (10/14/07) and vs. Tennessee (10/18/09).

WELKER IS GOOD FOR AT LEAST SIX After catching a team-high eight passes for a team-high 64 yards, Welker now has 6 or more catches in 27 of his last 31 games. Welker has caught at least one pass in each of his 50 games with the Patriots, including Sunday’s game. He has a current streak of 64 straight games with at least one reception. The last time Welker did not catch a pass in a game was December 24, 2005 when he played for Miami.

GUYTON SCORES ON HIS FIRST CAREER INT. LB Gary Guyton picked off a Carson Palmer pass in the second quarter and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown. It marks his first NFL interception. Last season the Patriots returned three interceptions for a touchdown. Brandon Meriweather returned an interception 39 yards for a score at Tampa Bay (10/25/09), CB Leigh Bodden scored on a 53-yard return vs. NY Jets (11/22/09) and Darius Bulter returned an interception 91 yards for a touchdown at Houston (1/3/10). Guyton’s return is the first interception returned for a touchdown by a New England linebacker since Adalius Thomas returned one 65 yards for a touchdown vs. San Diego (9/16/07).

WR BRANDON TATE ON THE RETURN Brandon Tate returned the second half kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. It is his first NFL touchdown and the first kickoff returned for a touchdown by New England since Ellis Hobbs returned a kick 95 yards for a touchdown at Oakland (12/14/08). Tate’s return was the ninth longest kickoff return for a touchdown in New England history and was the longest since Hobbs returned the second half kick for a team-record 108 yards at the New York Jets (9/9/07). Tate holds the NCAA record in combined kick and punt return yards with 3,523 yards and holds the ACC career records for kickoff returns (109) and kickoff return yardage (2,688).

GRONKOWSKI SCORES ON HIS FIRST CATCH Rookie TE Rob Gronkowski scored on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the fourth quarter. It was his first NFL reception. Gronkowski is the first Patriots rookie to score a touchdown on opening day since WR Deion Branch in 2002. Gronkowski was selected by the Patriots in the second round (42nd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft out of Arizona.

PATS RETURNED A KICKOFF AND INT FOR A TD LB Gary Guyton scored on a 59-yard interception return and WR Brandon Tate returned a kickoff for a 97-yard touchdown. It is the first time since 2002 that the Patriots returned an interception and kickoff for a touchdown in the same game. On November 17, 2002 at Oakland Kevin Faulk returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown and LB Tedy Bruschi scored on a 48-yard interception return.

BRADY THROWS THREE TOUCHDOWNS Tom Brady finished the game with three touchdown passes. It is the 70th time in his career that he has had two or more touchdowns in a game and the 24th time he has had three touchdowns in a game. The Patriots are 60-10 all-time when Brady throws two or more touchdowns and 21-3 when he throws for three touchdowns. It is the fourth time that he has thrown for three touchdowns in a season-opener. He also threw three touchdowns in season openers vs. Pittsburgh (9/9/02), vs. Indianapolis (9/9/04) and at New York Jets (9/9/07).

HERNANDEZ STARTS BIG Rookie TE Aaron Hernandez’s first NFL reception was a 45-yard catch early in the first quarter from QB Tom Brady. It is the longest reception for a Patriots rookie on his first career catch since WR Tony Simmons had a 47-yard reception from QB Drew Bledsoe in Simmons’s NFL debut (10/15/1998) at Miami. In 2009, the Patriots had 12 pass plays of 40 or more yards, including seven of 50 yards or more. Hernandez was drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft out of the University of Florida.

WELKER’S ROUTE TO THE NFL Despite being named the Oklahoma football player of the year by both USA Today and the Daily Oklahoman, Wes Welker’s only scholarship offer came from Texas Tech, and only after a player that committed to Texas Tech backed out. “I was thinking I’d get a scholarship somewhere,” Welker said. “When it didn’t happen when it was supposed to I was pretty hurt by it.” Welker had an impressive collegiate career, accumulating 259 receptions and eight punts returned for touchdowns. He even won a national award as the best special teams player in the country. Despite those accolades, he was passed over in the 2004 NFL draft and signed with San Diego as a free agent. He made the team, then was cut after the first game. He signed with Miami soon after and was used just on special teams. He caught New England’s eye with a 71-yard punt return on Monday Night Football in a game against the Patriots. He was acquired by the Patriots in a trade with Miami in 2007.

REACH 100 RECEPTIONS Welker reached 100 receptions in his 11th game of the 2009 season to tie Marvin Harrison for the fewest individual games played to reach 100 receptions in a season in NFL history. WILFORK WEARS HIS HEART ON HIS NECK Vince Wilfork wears No. 75 over his bulky shoulder pads. Underneath hangs a gold chain locket for those who were number one in his heart: his parents. In 2002, parents David and Barbara Wilfork both passed away within five months of each other, leaving the then University of Miami star without his greatest support system. Wilfork, who lost his father to diabetes, has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for diabetes-related causes. His annual draft day fundraiser, a bowling event he has held for seven years, is one of the signature fundraising events held by a pro athlete in New England. For his charity work, Wilfork was awarded the 2010 New England Patriots Ron Burton Community Service Award. While he has many accomplishment on the football field and will always cherish his National Championship and Super Bowl rings, his constant reminder lies closest to his heart, a picture of his late parents at their high school prom. “I carry them with me wherever I go”, Wilfork said of his parents’ keepsake. “My parents pushed me to be the best I could be. The things I do and my wife does, we do out of the kindness of our heart, and we do it for the community. I never look for anything in return. My teammates are my second family. My kids, my wife, the New England Patriots – that’s all I have.”

ZOLTAN MESKO: COMING TO AMERICA Rookie P Zoltan Mesko was born in Timosoara, Romania, on the Romania-Hungary border. In 1989, during the communist revolutions, his family would survive by diving on the floor to avoid gun shots from the armies. Even after the fall of the Berlin Wall, his parents and he lived in poverty. His family was finally able to escape Romania when his father won a United States Permanent Resident Card (green card) in the Diversity Immigrant Visa Lottery in 1997 when Mesko was 11.

MESKO DISCOVERS FOOTBALL An avid soccer player from his days in Romania, Mesko had a strong leg. It was only when he came to America that he discovered his leg could take him places. In eighth grade, Mesko was playing kickball in the gym when he kicked the ball so high that he broke a light fixture. He was given a choice: pay for the light fixture or play football. With his family still struggling with money and football being a more popular sport than soccer at his school, the choice was an obvious one—Mesko decided to play football. His leg would land him numerous Division I Scholarships and admission offers from Ivy League schools. From these, Mesko chose to play football at Michigan. BALL

DOUBLE TROUBLE: CB DEVIN MCCOURTY After being selected by the Patriots in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft (27th overall), CB Devin McCourty became part of a select group in league history. McCourty’s identical twin brother, Jason, is a cornerback with the Tennessee Titans, selected in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. The two are now only the 11th set of twins to play in the NFL. Devin and Jason were cornerbacks in the Rutgers secondary from 2005-08. Devin redshirted for the 2005 season and therefore was a year behind his brother in eligibility. McCourty is the second twin to suit up for the Patriots, after CB Kato Serwanga was a member of the team from 1998-2000. His twin brother Wasswa played for San Francisco and Minnesota from 1999-2001. According to McCourty’s mother, the two can only be told apart by tiny scars on their faces left by chickenpox.

ALL IN THE FAMILY: TE ROB GRONKOWSKI Rookie TE Rob Gronkowski grew up playing football against his brothers in the backyard. Now, he has a chance to play against them in the NFL. Dan Gronkowski, the oldest of the bunch, is currently in his second season as a TE for the Denver Broncos, while 23-year old Chris is currently a rookie with the Dallas Cowboys as a fullback. The Gronkowski’s are among 22 different sets of brothers currently in the NFL, yet they are the only family that can claim to have three siblings in the league. According to the pro Football Hall of Fame, the Gronkowski brothers join nine other familes to have at least three brothers playing at the same time. READ BETWEEN THE LINES The Patriots teamed up with Ahern Middle School in Foxborough on June 9 to introduce “Read Between the Lines,” a new program featuring Patriots offensive and defensive linemen to promote the school’s “Summer Reading Blitz.” Every student in attendance received a “Read Between the Lines” playbook and was encouraged to set their personal reading goals of at least two books this past summer. If the 923 students collectively read more than 2010 books over the summer, a Patriots offensive and defensive lineman will return in the fall for another assembly to reward the students. Any student who reads at least two books over the summer will also be entered into a drawing for an opportunity to have lunch following the assembly with one of the Patriots linemen.

MATT LIGHT AND THE LIGHT FOUNDATION Patriots T Matt Light and the Light Foundation will take aim at another successful year for the organization when they host the 2010 Matt Light Celebrity Shoot-Out on Tuesday, September 14 at Addieville East Farm in Mapleville, Rhode Island. The event allows for participants to test their clay shooting skills against a host of celebrities, including members of the New England Patriots as well as stars from TV and movies. Current Patriots QB Tom Brady, WR’s Randy Moss and Wes Welker and Light’s fellow linemen, C Dan Koppen and T Nick Kaczur have also tried their hand at the competition in years past. The Light Foundation was established in 2001 and strives to instill the values of responsibility and hard work to youths by providing unique outdoor learning experiences to assist them in reaching their highest potential.

THE TEAM OF THE DECADE hen Robert Kraft purchased the New England Patriots in 1994, few would have thought that just 16 years later the franchise would be the undisputed team of the decade in the first decade of the new millennium. Kraft brought a winning vision to the organization and dedicated his resources to building a consistent winner.
