The Patio offers companies a way to make poultry meat production sustainable. On one hand, the system offers a firm basis to produce healthy broilers. On the other hand, working with Patio en- ables reduced use of resources, like hatching eggs, energy, transport movements and land. System description The Patio is built in combinations of 2 rows of 2.4 meter wide, which are placed mirrored against one another. The rows consist of 4 to 6 litter belts above each other. The compact construction with multiple tiers allows a 2.8 time more efficient use of land with the Patio system. Integrated on each tier of the Patio are a tray- transport system, feeding line and drinking line. Furthermore, the Patio is an all-integrated system, with light, heating, ventilation, chick harvesting and manure removal systems integrated into the con- cept. PatioBrooding for Robustness

Towards sustainable productionThe demand for a more sustainable way of produ-cing our meat is increasing in countries all over the world. The Patio offers companies a way to make poultry meat production sustainable. On one hand, the system offers a fi rm basis to produce healthy broilers. On the other hand, working with Patio en-ables reduced use of resources, like hatching eggs, energy, transport movements and land.

System descriptionThe Patio is built in combinations of 2 rows of 2.4 meter wide, which are placed mirrored against one another. The rows consist of 4 to 6 litter belts above each other. The compact construction with multiple tiers allows a 2.8 time more effi cient use of land with the Patio system.

Integrated on each tier of the Patio are a tray-transport system, feeding line and drinking line. Furthermore, the Patio is an all-integrated system, with light, heating, ventilation, chick harvesting and manure removal systems integrated into the con-cept.

Brooding for Robustness In broiler production, the importance of providing the best conditions

possible from the day olds’ arrival at the farm is generally acknow-

ledged. Especially during the brooding period, the young chicks are

highly vulnerable to suboptimal conditions. Too low temperatures,

drafts and delays in fi rst feed and water intake are known to result in

reduced technical results at the end of the growing period. Less well

known is that at the moment of placement in the broiler farm, a con-

siderable portion of the broilers’ life – 3 to 5% - was already spent. The

broilers’ life starts at the moment it emerges from the egg – several

hours or days before the farmer can start caring for it.

Perfect environment The climate principle in the Patio enables companies to provide a perfect climate for the hatching and the entire growing period. For instance, in the brooding period, the thermoregulatory systems of the chicks are not fully de-veloped yet and we need to provide warm air and prevent high air speeds. The Patio is very effi cient for this purpose, as it has a compact design. Air only crosses 2.4 meters through the system, offering all broilers fresh air. The climate system ensures an even distribution of fresh air to all of the layers. In the end of the growing period, the system can provide an air fl ow underneath the litter belt. Thus enabling effective heat removal from the bottom of the broilers. The best indicators for a perfect environment are the good health of the broilers and the litter quality in the system.

The Robust BroilerBroilers grown in the Patio are healthy, with well deve-loped immune systems, digestive and respiratory sys-tems and are well able to regulate their body tempera-ture. This is the result of the environment where the broiler has spent its brooding period. A Patio broiler performs well with a good liveability and minimum use of medicine.

The Robust SystemJust like the broiler that hatches in it, the Patio system is a housing concept able to withstand a large variation in external factors. The climate system is able to adapt to local climate conditions. The high level of automa-tion gives more independency of manual labour. The Patio system is effi cient and independent.

Patio principle In Patio, the hatching and brooding phases are combined. The system is de-signed to hatch broiler chicks at the farm, in the environment where they will also be grown. Instead of transporting day olds from the hatchery to the broiler farm, companies working with Patio receive 18-day-incubated eggs, which are placed in the Patio. The young chick is thus provided with conditions perfectly matching its’ needs, from the moment it emerges from the egg. At the end of the growing period, broilers are harvested automatically with use of the litter belts on which they are housed.

Key arguments for choosing Patio

• 1.5% higher average hatch rates, less transport move-ments and providing the broilers direct access to feed and water.

• 50% reduction of heating costs due to compact design and use of a heat recovery system. Air is used 4x more effi cient ly due to the perfectly balanced air distribution.

• Manual procedures are automated with smart solutions like the tray transport system (25.000 eggs/hour), litter infeed, spray vaccination and the broiler harvesting and loading systems.

• Quick and easy cleaning. Manure is removed at the end of the growing period, with use of the litter belts. All parts in contact with manure are made of synthetic materials and are thus easy to clean.

Effi cient productionKeeping in mind the fact that companies are growing in size and it gets harder to fi nd skilled personnel with knowledge of poultry, the Patio is de-signed to reduce the need of labour. Inspection of the birds is facilitated by the inspection platform on the side of the system. In the Patio, chicks are grown on a litter belt, which is connected to an automatic harvesting and loading system. By automating the process of harvesting and loading the chicks, we integrate a gentle handling of birds in the Patio concept in com-bination with automatic manure removal. Broilers and manure are sepa-rated at the back end of the system.
