Urban Development and PlanningFor the first time in human history over half of the world’s population lives in cities. This presents a monumental
challenge to politicians, urban planners, and citizens to build sustainable, just, and livable urban spaces. A background in urban geography prepares you for one of the many careers devoted to improving cities and settlements around the globe.
Diversity and JusticeHowdotheplaces,spaces,andenvironmentsthatweinhabitreinforcestructuresofoppressionor createthepotentialforliberation?Socialmovementsandactivistshavecreatedspatialtheoriesandstrategiestochangetheworld:byoccupyingpublicspaceorbyfightingfortheprotectionofsacredlands.Inourclasses,youwilllearnhowpowerflowsthroughspace;thatallpoliticsunfoldsinplaces;thateverydaylifeispolitical;andthatenvironmentalissuesareconnectedtosocialjustice.Youwillalsolearntoolsincludingmappingtechnologies,remotesensing,oralhistories,andinterviews.
Geography of Health and DiseaseHealthGeographytakesasocio-ecologicalapproach,ratherthanabiomedicalapproachtounderstandingtheoccurrenceofhumandiseaseandwellbeing.Thisisahighlyintegratedfield,requiringknowledgeofsocialsystems,environmentalsystems,andtheetiologyandecologyofdisease.Inaddition,geospatialtechnologiessuchasgeographicinformationsystems,satelliteremotesensing,andgeographicanalysisarepowerfultoolsinthestudyandmanagementofhumandiseases.Thispathwaywillpreparestudentsforacareerinthespatial,social,andecologicaldimensionsofpublichealth,aswellasforgraduateschoolinthespatialhealthsciences.
Political EcologyPoliticalecologistsstudythereciprocalanddynamicrelationsbetweensocietyandnature.Howdomarkets,socialrelations,andpopulationsinfluenceresourcegovernancepracticesandviceversa?Whosevoicesandideascountinthecreationofprotectedareas,orinthedecisionsaboutwheretoxicwasteandtrasharedeposited?Whenandhowdodecisionmakersorcommunitymembersmobilizescientificknowledgetopursueenvironmentalandethicalcommitments?ThePoliticalEcologyPathwayinGeographyoffersacross-disciplinaryapproachforansweringsuchquestionsand,morebroadly,forstudyingtherelationshipbetweentheeconomy,politics,andecology.
