I’m proud to introduce our new catalogue.
Writing just days after Wolfhart Pannenberg
has passed away, it is sobering to think how
important good, clear and challenging theology is
for today’s church and world. Pannenberg was an
exceptional theologian who gave us a clear lead,
demonstrating that our theology should be public,
Christ-centred and always doxological.
This year’s catalogue shows our continuing
commitment to both the church and the
academy. Here is a list of titles whose foundation
is thorough research and rigour and whose
purpose is to see people and church
communities developing and being transformed
in their thinking, mission and personal lives.
Welcome, then, to our catalogue for 2015. I
trust you will fi nd it helpful in your ministry and
academic pursuit.
Every blessing
Mike Parsons

PATERNOSTER BOOKS – AVAILABLE FEBRUARY 2015
SUMMARYJesus and the New Testament writers use their Scriptures in ways that may
seem foreign to those who use those same Scriptures today.
Contents: Larry Hurtado, ‘Core OT texts and their Christological Interpretation’; Ian Malcolm & Matthew Malcolm, ‘All the Scriptures’; Roland Deines, ‘Scripture and Jesus’; Donald West, ‘Acts 4 and Prayer’; Ben Sutton, ‘Acts 10 and Peter’; Mark Seifrid, ‘Scripture and Paul’; Lionel Windsor, ‘Seed, Many, One in Galatians’; Martin Foord, ‘Psalm 68 in Ephesians’; Mark Keown, ‘Scripture in Philippians’; Allan Chapple, ‘Scripture and 1 Peter’; Matthew Malcolm, ‘Triadic Figures in Hebrews’; Rory Shiner, ‘Reading the New Testament from the Outside.’
COMMENDATIONS‘This collection of essays brings together leading scholars from around the world
to explore how the New Testament authors use the Old Testament to express the
identity of Jesus Christ. The result is a penetrating insight into how the fi rst Christians
expressed their faith in an intertextual dialogue with the Old Testament to profess
and promote faith in Jesus as Messiah and Lord. Taken together, the various studies
explain what it means to say that the things pertaining to Jesus happened ‘according
to the scriptures’. A fi rst-class study for anyone desiring a deeper grasp of biblical
exegesis and early Christology.’
Michael Bird, Ridley College, Australia
‘The talented authors of this volume present fresh and stimulating perspectives on the
perennial challenge of the use of the OT in the NT. They employ insights from cognate
studies, particularly linguistics, cultural memory, and identity, examining test cases
from different parts of the NT canon, and illustrating the early church’s re-appropriation
of the texts. There is a feast of good things here that demonstrates how productive
and helpful believing scholarship can be. This deserves a wide readership.’
Donald A. Hagner, Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Fuller
Theological Seminary, USA

SUMMARYThe Trinitarian resurgence has been celebrated by the majority of recent
theologians and has impacted nearly every area of modern theology. A
careful rendering of the tradition reaches a high point in Stephen R. Holmes
The Holy Trinity: Understanding God’s Life (Paternoster, 2012). The present
volume contains invited essays covering a range of perspectives and
hosts contributors from around the world who are critically appreciative
of Holmes’s work and its signifi cance for contemporary refl ection on this
doctrine of the Trinity.
COMMENDATIONS‘Jason Sexton and Tom Noble are to be commended for assembling this fi ne
collection of responses to Holmes’s work. Because it focuses on the right issues and
raises the right questions, the present volume is sure to advance the contemporary
discussion.’
Scott R. Swain, Reformed Theological Seminary, Orlando, USA
‘Taking Steve Holmes’s work as a point of departure, this wonderful collection shows
the contours of an emergent Trinitarian conversation. This volume offers an excellent
introduction to the emergent Trinitarian conversations to be found across Protestant
traditions. It is a tribute to the wide scope of Steve Holmes’s work and his ability to
draw so many voices into his own developing theology.’

THE AUTHORSimon Perry studied Theology at
Oxford, and completed his PhD
at Cambridge. Having served as
Chaplain to Fitzwilliam College in
Cambridge and as a minister at
Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church,
Simon is now Chaplain at Robinson
College, Cambridge.
SUMMARYAs Christendom’s god continues to dwindle, atheism becomes an
increasingly safe pastime. Now that we live in a post-Christendom era, the
New Atheists boldly oppose the god of a bygone age whilst dutifully serving
the new gods of our own age. These new gods include the insurmountable,
dehumanizing and oppressive political, economic and social forces that
acquire power at the expense of the powerless.
This is a call to both atheist and Christian to be faithful to their atheistic
heritage. At root, this entails radical openness to radical otherness. Exploring
Philosophy and Biblical Studies, Science and Ethics, Politics and Ecology,
Economics and Literature, this book argues that when atheists are truly
atheist and Christians truly Christian, there is true hope for a better world.
The book culminates with a presentation of the Lord’s Prayer as an atheist
manifesto written to incite gracious, pragmatic, effective rebellion against
the gods of the age.
COMMENDATIONS‘Simon Perry’s provocative book throws down the gauntlet to atheists and
believers alike. So-called “new atheists” will welcome his attack on much
traditional Christianity – only to discover themselves exposed as worshippers
of the gods of this world. But Perry’s real challenge is to Christians, who are
forced to look again at their beliefs in the light of a ‘radical atheism’ which fi nds
God in the “other” – a God who subverts all human values. Reading this book
may prove both disturbing and life-changing.’
Morna Hooker, Lady Margaret’s Professor Emerita, University of
Cambridge, Life Fellow of Robinson College
KEY FEATURES• Presents atheism as a Christian virtue (in a way that has not been done
before)
• The post-Christendom God looks uncomfortably different to the God
with which most are comfortable – this is challenging
• The radical re-envisioning of an almighty but non-omnipotent God
challenges us to re-read Scripture
TARGET AUDIENCE• People interested in the atheist–religion debate
• Atheists will fi nd the book supportive of (and constructively challenging
to) their own position, as will Christians

THE AUTHORFran Porter researches and writes
in socially engaged theology,
exploring Christian faith, feminism,
gender, equality, social diversity and
reconciliation. The focus of much
of her work is concerned with the
church’s mission and relationship to
wider society. .
SUMMARYAs part of the After Christendom series, this book explores one of the
key relational dynamics of contemporary society, namely the relationship
between women and men. Women and Men After Christendom is distinct
in exploring these challenges, changes and new opportunities in the light
of the shift from Christendom to post-Christendom.
COMMENDATIONS‘This is an accessible and good read about a complex topic of gender,
Christendom and post-Christendom. For those seeking to explore the history
of gender relationships in the church from the fi rst century this is a good
introduction; it raises many engaging questions and gives an indication of the
issues that arise. It is a worthwhile refl ection for those exploring issues of female
and male and wondering how we have arrived where we are in the Church.’

THE AUTHORJennifer Campbell is a Lecturer in
Christian Doctrine at Westminster
Theological Centre and leader of
Eaglesinfl ight.
Website: eaglesinfl ight.net
SUMMARYThis book seeks to address both the bewilderment and desire for prophetic
visionary leadership in the contemporary church by a discussion of two
signifi cant revivals of the 1600s, the English Nonconformist Quakers and
the Protestant French Huguenots. How can prophetic vision be incorporated
successfully into the ministry of the church? The book argues that the
mission of the apostle, evangelist, pastor and teacher is to be prophetically
inspired and led in every way by the union of the Word, the Person of Jesus
Christ, and the Person of the Holy Spirit.
COMMENDATIONS‘In this thoroughly researched work, Jenny Campbell examines the prophetic
apostolic activity of the beleaguered and persecuted Quaker and Huguenot
communities of the past. Campbell subjects the intriguing and unusual stories
of prophetic activity to a sympathetic Calvinist critique of Word and the Spirit,
drawing out lessons for the church today of what it might mean to have a much
needed prophetic and visionary leadership.’

SUMMARYHow did Christendom affect understandings and misunderstandings of
God’s ways? How do we understand God’s work in and through the Church,
the relation of Church and Government, and what it means, regardless of
the social context of Christendom or not, for the Church to remain faithful
to God?
COMMENDATIONS‘If you would like to refl ect seriously on what it means to believe in God in
our world, and why it might matter, then read this. Deeply Christocentric and
powerfully theological, this book also manages, through story and refl ection, to
present ideas that matter profoundly in ways that are engaging.’
Ruth Gouldbourne, Minister of Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church,
London
‘This is a book born of attention to our context, and the ways in which attention
to the theological tradition can help articulate our contemporary experience.’

SUMMARYJohn Hick was one of the twentieth century’s most infl uential and creative
philosophers of religion. In this book, Sinkinson charts the development of
Hick’s thinking over his life and how this shaped his engagement with the
world religions. Attention is paid to Hick’s epistemology and how this was
key in his interpretation of both his own religion and the phenomena of
religious pluralism. It can be shown that the development of Hick’s thought
is the legacy of the liberal theology of the Enlightenment. The project
begun by Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Schleiermacher is shown to fi nd
clear expression in the developed theology of religions proposed by Hick.
The book includes a survey of his important books and a transcript of the
last recorded radio dialogue that Hick had with an evangelical theologian.
COMMENDATIONS‘John Hick’s contribution to religious studies has had a profound effect on modern
Western theology. Chris Sinkinson’s thoughtful and robust assessment of Hick’s
work is urgently needed. As we face the continuing challenges of religious
pluralism, this book will enrich and encourage a new generation of orthodox
scholars and believers “to contend for the faith once for all entrusted to the
saints”. Highly recommended.’

THE AUTHORRobert Pope is Reader in Theology
at the University of Wales.
SUMMARYThe book traces and evaluates the development of the doctrine of the
Church and its sacraments throughout the centuries, with emphasis on the
Patristic age, the Reformation and contemporary argument. It gives space to
how, from the sixteenth century, a greater understanding developed of the
church as community as well as recent thought about the sacraments as a
means of building that community. This distinctive work will be foundational
for those seeking new and deeper understanding of the church and its
communal life.
COMMENDATIONS‘This is essential reading for all who wish to understand the nuances of church
history. Dr Pope takes us on a complex and scholarly journey revealing how
Church and sacrament have developed and changed throughout time. He is a
master craftsman, bringing to life and critically engaging with major thinkers
within our Christian heritage.’
Lisa Isherwood, University of Winchester
‘A study of ecclesiology which places key developments in ministry and
sacraments in historical context is badly needed, and warmly to be welcomed.
This study, by a historian who is also at home in systematic theology, is signifi cant
and cannot be ignored.’

SUMMARYIn the style of the author’s bestselling work, No More Law! (Paternoster,

such topics as the character and life of the contemporary Christian, the
misconception that Paul and James disagreed on the gospel, Christians
overcoming trials by aggressive faith, the nature of tests and trials,
justifi cation by works and its relationship to justifi cation by faith, the power
and misuse of the tongue, and so on. The book is provocative to holy living
in Jesus Christ for today’s church.
COMMENDATIONS‘Good, solid teaching, clarity, helpful and practical exposition. Bruce Atkinson’s
treatment of the Letter of James refl ects the original and expounds it for the

SUMMARYJohn wrote Revelation from his prison on Patmos to provide pastoral
ministry to Christians in the Asian churches at a time of impending
persecution. Once we understand John’s symbols and his pastoral concerns
his book proves to be a great message of hope as well as a timely warning
not to be drawn into the worship of antichrist fi gures.
COMMENDATIONS‘Paul Barnett, rightly insisting that Revelation is primarily a pastoral book, draws
out its implications for John’s day and ours. His book is primarily written for church
ministers and study groups. There is a major gap between erudite, academic
commentaries on Revelation and ill-founded, sensationalist, populist writing.
This book will help fi ll that gap.’

THE AUTHORStuart Murray is a trainer and
consultant working under the
auspices of the Anabaptist Network.
SUMMARYDuring the past century the advance of secularism, the growth of other
religious communities and the decline of the churches have combined to
reduce the size and infl uence of the Christian community. Christians are
now members of a minority religious community in a plural society. How is
this diminished status to be understood in a global and historical context,
within the purposes of God? What institutional changes are required? What
psychological and emotional adjustments are needed in communities that
have a corporate memory of majority status, privilege and infl uence? What
hopes and expectations should be encouraged? What strategies should
be adopted? A Vast Minority explores the challenges and opportunities
we face.
COMMENDATIONS‘Stuart Murray brings a clear and hopeful voice to a contemporary context in
which the church fi nds that it is no longer at the centre of things. Building on
his previous work, this signifi cant new book presents an honest appraisal of
the church’s position and will be helpful for many who are seeking a deeper
understanding of the challenges that face the Christian community and the
new questions that need to be addressed. The Vast Minority is an important
and timely contribution.’

Joy in Luke–Acts
The Intersection of Rhetoric, Narrative, and Emotion
AUTHOR: DAVID H. WENKEL
SUMMARY:The Gospel of Luke has been called the ‘gospel of joy’, and the joy
theme has also been recognized in Acts. This theme, though, has
received relatively little attention in NT scholarship. Joy in Luke–Acts
examines the joy theme from a socio-rhetorical vantage point, showing
that the joy theme empowers the Lukan rhetoric of reversal. The
theme is a primary method in which the narrator seeks to persuade
the reader to enter into the values and beliefs that characterize the
‘upside-down’ world in which YHWH has visited his people in Jesus.
COMMENDATIONS:‘David Wenkel succeeds wonderfully and lucidly in his attempt to unpack the
place of joy within the narrative fabric of Luke–Acts as a whole and coherent
unity. How does this element of joy work to enhance the two-volume text’s
pervasive theme of reversal? His mastery of secondary sources and careful
exegesis of the text answer the question, and constitutes a showcase for
how to understand any given element, in this case the pervasive joy factor,
within the totality of its narrative context.’

THE AUTHORPeter J. Morden is Vice-Principal of Spurgeon’s College,
London.
SUMMARY:This is a major biography of Baptist minister, theologian and missionary
statesman Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) to mark the bicentenary of
his death (2015). Fuller was a hugely signifi cant fi gure, one who
continues to cast a long shadow. As the founding secretary of the
Baptist Missionary Society he was instrumental in the rise of the so-
called modern missionary movement and the spread of the gospel
around the world. But he was also an important theologian and
apologist and was key in the revival of eighteenth-century Calvinistic
Baptist life which took place in England at the end of the eighteenth
century. Analysis of his life and ministry sheds signifi cant light on a
crucial period of religious history, and informs current theological and
missiological debates.
COMMENDATIONS:‘Dr Peter Morden has already shown himself to be a reliable guide to the
life and theology of Andrew Fuller. In this further work he extends our
understanding of Fuller as a pivotal fi gure within Baptist life and mission and
establishes himself as one of the leading interpreters of his work.’

THE AUTHORDavid B. McEwan is Director of Research, Senior
Lecturer in Theology, Pastoral Theology and Practice,
Nazarene Theological College, Brisbane and Director of
the Australasian Centre for Wesleyan Research.
SUMMARY:This unique work begins with Wesley’s understanding of the life of
the Triune God as the model for understanding love, holiness and
happiness. These qualities are restored to us in our salvation. Wesley
believed that these are foundational to our discipleship and to our
spiritual formation in Jesus Christ.
COMMENDATIONS:‘The idea that holiness and happiness are closely related may come as a
surprise to those who identify holiness with long-faced morose joy killers.
Yet John Wesley’s view of the Christian life may justly be described as
eudaemonist, in that it sees human happiness as the by-product of a heart
fully devoted to the love of God and neighbour. There have been a number
of attempts to revisit Wesley’s doctrine of sanctifi cation and reconstruct it
along more dynamic, relational lines but most of these attempts have proven
superfi cial. The Life of God in the Soul, on the other hand, provides us with
a serious scholarly treatment of what has been called Wesley’s theology of
“relational holiness”. I recommend it wholeheartedly.’

SUMMARY:There has been a growth of African churches and African-type
Christianity around the world in recent decades. This phenomenal
growth has made it necessary to understand what African Christians
believe. This fascinating book is a study of what African Christians
in Britain believe about the Holy Spirit. This unique study advances
fi ve factors which determine African Pneumatology: the day to day
experience of Africans, their African worldview, the African traditional
concept of God, the Bible and the worldwide Pentecostal movement.
COMMENDATIONS:‘This is an exciting study of the theology of the Holy Spirit among ordinary
African believers in the UK. It provides unique theological insight into one of
the most important transnational movements in Christianity today. Therefore,
it is a must-read text for all students of African theology, pneumatology and
transnational religious movements.’

THE AUTHORLaurence Malcolm Blanchard is Senior Pastor at
Charter Oak Lighthouse, Covina, California.
SUMMARY:Universalism – the idea that in the end all will be saved – is almost as
old as Christian theology itself and has been shrouded in controversy
ever since it made its fi rst appearance in the patristic era. Although
a concerted effort was made by the church to eradicate the notion
along with those who espoused it, universalism has survived and in
recent years has begun to thrive. No longer automatically relegated
to heresy status, the idea of universal salvation has broken the bonds
of doctrinal repression and is now becoming a mainstream doctrinal
alternative. This impressive work surveys and assesses the recent
debate over universal salvation in western theology within the context
of the historic development of the doctrine. Its fi ndings are intriguing
and will furnish critical food for thought for many years to come.
COMMENDATIONS:From the dawn of religion people have been wrestled with the question, “Will
all be saved?” With our growing awareness of the world as a global village,
that question is even more pressing. Despite the plethora of answers, there is
a shortage of guidebooks that give in-depth overview combined with judicious
evaluation of competing claims. Will All Be Saved? meets that need. Against
a background survey of the history of universalism, Dr Blanchard focuses on
Protestant and Catholic thought since 1960. He identifi es approaches that
centre on Christology and those which stress religious pluralism. His work is
a masterful summary of contemporary thought that does not shy away from
critical assessment. Will All Be Saved? is a unique guidebook and reference tool.

THE AUTHORTheodore Zachariades a Greek Cypriot, has been in active
Christian ministry since 1991 in Canada and the USA.
He gained an MDiv and a PhD from Southern Seminary,
Louisville, Kentucky. He and his wife have 4 children.
SUMMARY:This important book reassesses the classic Chalcedonian view of
Jesus, ‘one person, two natures’. It carefully rejects all forms of
kenotic Christology and affi rms that Jesus possessed and used all
the divine attributes, in particular, that of omnipresence, arguing that
evangelical scholars have abandoned this important truth. This has
ramifi cations for our view of the Holy Spirit and of Christ’s presence
with his people. It challenges us to read the Scriptures again and to
live in the presence of Jesus.
COMMENDATIONS:‘In this important study of orthodox Christology, Dr Zachariades develops an
aspect of it that has generally been neglected. How should we understand
the universal presence of the risen, ascended and glorifi ed Christ? Starting
with the controversies of the early church, he takes us through the questions
involved in the discussion and points us to a deeper understanding of how
Christ is both God and man at the same time.’

THE AUTHORRoger Standing is Principal of Spurgeon’s College,
London, UK.
SUMMARY:This unique and challenging exposition of the Forward Movement
situates it as a spontaneous development within the Victorian urban
context of an escalation of poverty, slum housing, drunkenness, bad
sanitation, epidemics of cholera and typhus, unemployment and
social unrest. The movement was never offi cially organized, yet its
infl uence and achievements were vast. The movement attempted
to construct an experiential theology, based on Wesley’s doctrine of
entire sanctifi cation, modifi ed by American ‘Second Blessing’ teaching
and the need for ‘baptism in the Holy Spirit’ for personal holiness.
From this experiential base they desired to engage with contemporary
thought and to work for social and political change. However, this
did not blunt their commitment to either evangelism or their own
ecclesiology, although it did result in openness to innovation in
evangelistic methods, ecumenism and denominational reconstruction.
From this, the church of the twenty-fi rst century might well learn
lessons of social engagement and spiritual insight.
COMMENDATIONS:‘The Forward Movement in Methodism during the last years of the nineteenth
century was an attempt to grapple with the novel problems thrown up by
the great cities of the era. Its central fi gure, Hugh Price Hughes, was a fi ery
orator, rarely out of the national spotlight. Hughes’s newspaper, The Methodist
Times, is the basis of Roger Standing’s fresh analysis of the movement as
evangelical and holistic in its missiology.’

THE AUTHORMary Patton Baker is a Deacon at All Souls Anglican
Church in Wheaton, Il., involved in ministries of teaching,
discipleship, and spiritual formation.
SUMMARY:This wonderful book proposes a theological model for understanding
Eucharistic celebration that demonstrates its centrality to the Christian
believer’s sanctifi cation and spiritual formation. It centres on John
Calvin’s framework for understanding the Lord’s Supper which was
founded upon the believer’s union with Christ, along with the belief
that the Lord’s Supper deepened that union. By bringing Calvin’s
Eucharistic theology into conversation with contemporary speech-
act philosophy, Kevin Vanhoozer’s divine/communicative ontology,
Biblical theology, and historical and liturgical theology, this multi-
disciplinary dissertation provides a biblical and theological foundation
for understanding the role the Eucharist plays in the worship,
sanctifi cation, and formation of the church and her communicants.
COMMENDATIONS:‘Nothing ails the church that Mary Patton Baker’s Participation in Christ can’t
fi x. What the church needs, she argues, is not aspirin, bed-rest or plenty of
fl uid, but rather sustained attention to and participation in the Lord’s Supper,
an embodied dramatic realization of the communicant’s union with Christ.
Baker integrates Calvin’s theology of the Lord’s Supper with my own proposal
about doctrine being direction for the church’s fi tting participation in the drama
of redemption, and makes a compelling case for viewing the Supper itself as
a powerful means of spiritual formation – just the dose of theological good
sense that is needed at present.’

THE AUTHORMartin Foord is an ordained Anglican minister and
teaches Theology in Trinity Theological College, Perth,
Western Australia.
SUMMARY:The Reformers described themselves as ‘evangelical’ because their
theology focused on the evangel, the Gospel. It is surprising how little
research has been done on what the Reformers meant by the word
‘Gospel’. This work examines the Reformation understanding of this
‘Gospel’ in its systematic theological context against the backdrop of
medieval theology. It shows that despite common ground between the
Lutheran and Reformed wings of the Reformation there were subtle
differences that eventually entered their respective confessions.
COMMENDATIONS:‘The Gospel lies at the very heart of what Christianity means, and yet
throughout the ages Christians have often disagreed on what precisely the
Gospel is and which aspects of biblical truth lie at its centre. This is a profoundly
practical question because the answer to it will determine how the Bible
is read, preached and applied. In this book, Martin Foord offers a detailed
study of debates during the Reformation in order to lay the groundwork for a
contemporary discussion of this most pressing issue. This is a fi ne, historical-
theological contribution to a most important topic.’

THE AUTHORC. Douglas Weaver is Professor of Religion at Baylor
University, USA.
SUMMARY:The book is a collection of essays from the International Conference
of Baptist Studies VI that was held at Southeastern Baptist Theological
Seminary, Wake Forest, North Carolina in July 2012. The topic of
Baptist Identity remains important for Baptists across the globe.
This collection of essays reveals the richness and the diversity of
conceptions about Baptist identity that have been shared by and
about Baptists. The essays, written by an international set of authors,
examine issues of Baptist origins and questions of identity up to the
present. Written with attention to historical context and grounded in
primary source research, the essays will contribute to current and
future debates about Baptist history and identity past and present.
COMMENDATIONS:‘“It’s all in the mind,’’Beatle George Harrison once said. But for Baptists,
mind and deed have shaped perceptions within and without. Mirrors and
Microscopes examines how Baptists from John Smyth and Thomas Helwys
to the present have understood themselves and, conversely, how outsiders
have viewed Baptists. This collection of essays offers helpful and diverse
perspectives of generations of eye-witnesses whose words have collectively
shaped and reshaped the Baptist faith, evoking Thoreau’s observation that,

THE AUTHORDavid J. Cohen is Head of Biblical Studies, Lecturer
in Hebrew Bible and Language, Vose Seminary, Perth,

SUMMARY:This exceptional book explores our understanding of the Psalter as a
book of prayer in the Judeo-Christian tradition. It focuses in original
and helpful ways on the genre of Lament as a text medium through
which personal distress can be engaged with and processed in the
action of prayer, and explores some of the psychodynamic shifts
which can occur for people praying in this way, providing some
actual case examples of the process at work. The author provides a
thorough examination of the lament genre found in the Psalter from
a theological perspective and also offers a practical working model
which could be incorporated into work with people who are suffering
from distress in a variety of forms.
COMMENDATIONS:‘David Cohen has given us a new set of insights about the function of Lament
Psalms in real life; a coherent and brilliantly creative pastoral perspective.
Cohen has opened a wide door into an entirely new world of spiritual vision
and relevance.’
