Ministry Fair Kicks Off Fall Season

Our annual Ministry Fair on Sunday, September 7 will resume our activities for the

fall season. Held in the fellowship hall beginning at 9:15 AM, our Ministry Fair will fea-

ture a number of groups from our church that will have information about their various

ministries. In addition to the information that will be shared, we will serve donuts, muf-

fins, coffee, and juice. We will also have several gift cards from area restaurants that we will give away.

Join us for this fun way to learn about the many ways our church helps people grow in their faith.

Worship returns to its 10:30 AM hour on Sunday, September 7. I will begin a six week sermon series

titled When the Going Gets Tough. This series based on the New Testament book of Philippians will ex-

plores areas of how to stand strong in our faith in difficult and adverse times.

Sunday school for all ages begins on Sunday, September 14. I, along with Dave Sanderson, will be

co-teaching a class titled, Fear Factor: Facing our Fears as People of Faith. This five week class will ex-

plore a number of fears we face and how we can use the power of God and our faith in Jesus Christ to over-

come them. This class will be held in the Fireside Room.

Orrin Feddes, director of our children’s and youth ministry programs, has lots of exciting things

planned this fall for the children and youth. Sunday school is offered at 9:15 for all ages and our Kidzzone

Ministry Program is offered for children grades K-5 during our 10:30 AM worship service as kids are invited

to leave after the children’s time each Sunday morning.

Youth group resumes to its full schedule on Wednesday, September 17 at 6 PM. We are looking for

people who are willing to help provide a meal on a Wednesday evening. We have a very active youth pro-

gram on Wednesdays and friends are always invited to come.

Groups for men and women, Presbyterian Women’s circles, a college Bible study, among other activ-

ities will all resume in the next few weeks. I hope you will get involved in some of

the things we offer and discover ways to grow in your faith.

I love this time of year as the temperatures begin to change, football season

begins, and church activities return to their full schedule. Come and take part in what

we are doing at FPC! I look forward to worshipping with you on the next Lord’s

Day!

SESSION MINUTES Session Notes: During the session meeting on August 10, Sharon Lincoln, represent-

ing the Foundation, asked the session to approve the election of the following individuals to

the Foundation: Trina White, Tonya Appelt, John Wright, Chris Eriksen, and Robin Bauer.

The Foundation will hold a Legacy Luncheon on October 26. Jack Bell spoke about the importance of being involved in the Presbytery and urged session members to take turns attending the meetings. Our church now is entitled to two commission-ers at each meeting. It was voted to approve the Personnel Committee’s selection of Sandi Rabas as music ac-companist and Orrin Feddes as Director of Children’s and Youth Ministry. Pastor Dave led a discussion concerning some of the decisions which were made at the re-

cent General Assembly.

The Church Mice

The church mice have noticed Bud and Joanne Leuthold working especial-ly hard around the church grounds. They have spent many hours this sum-mer pulling weeds, watering flowers, trimming bushes, raking leaves, cleaning up the parking lot, and sprucing things up on our beautiful four acre property. Bud and Joanne recently joined our church and have jumped right in to helping around our church property. We greatly appreciate your help!!

Summer is almost over!! ! The purpose is all about getting to know others in the congregation. Make it easy on

everyone, whether it’s in the home of an outing, but make it easy.

If you find that you cannot host, give someone on your team to do the hosting. Do not let this time fall through

There are times that you just cannot host an event, but someone else may be happy to do it, give them a chance.

The Host(s) (first name(s) in cell) picks a couple of dates during the subject Month that is convenient for you and

calls your guests. If you are short of guests (someone may not be able to come), fill in the spaces with new faces

with substitutes listed below or anyone not involved in dinners of eight (don’t forget new members or older mem-

bers). Let your guests know when and where to come and what side dish or beverage to bring if any. (If you do

not hear from your host call them, they may have forgotten.)

This is a very flexible program. Any activities to accompany or follow your dinner are up to you. Even the dinner

format can be modified to a brunch or whatever creative ideas you come up with including eating out. Enjoy your

As summer turns to autumn, the women of our church will begin to meet in our circles for fellowship, friendship, study, prayer, and the caring for each other and the needs of our church. On Wednesday, September 17th the Miriam and Naomi circles will meet at 9:15 AM. The Elizabeth and Sarah cir-cles will meet at 1:00 PM. Watch the church bulletin for details and places. We will begin a study called Reconciling Paul: A Contemporary Study of 2 Corinthians. All women are welcome. Paul's writings are some of the most influential in Christianity. Revisiting the struggles Paul faced and the authenticity

and integrity of his theology is an essential task for churches today in the midst of great change. Paul, like us, wrestled with and questioned his faith as he tried to live as authentically as possible in an ancient world that, like ours, was also in the midst of great change. We will have our annual Luncheon receiving our Thank Offering at 12:00 noon on October 1 in the Fellowship Hall. All women are welcome. Welcome Sandi Rabas Sandi has been hired to provide music accompaniment during our worship services on Sunday mornings. Sandi has had extensive training in both the organ and piano and in a variety of musical styles. Sandi was the long time music director at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd and her husband, Randy, serves as the organist at First United Methodist Church. Randy and Sandi and four grown children. Sandi is interested in working with special groups in providing music for our worship ser-vices and also has an interest in bringing back the bell choir. If any of these areas are of interest to you please contact Sandi.

Youth News Welcome Back! Hope everyone had a great summer and stayed cool. To catch you up with everything, the high school students and 5 leaders were able to go down to Denver and work with a program called DOOR. Being able to help out people who are homeless and organizations that help others was such a blessing for not only myself and the other leaders, but also the students. I have been meeting with the high school students throughout the summer for a Bible study. We have been looking at the Gospel of Mark and talking about who is the one who calls us to follow Him and what does it mean to follow the one who call us. It has been very challenging and rewarding. Finally, F.P.C. Youth is starting back up September 17 at 6 pm. Please join us at the church for food, games, worship, and great discussions. Thank for your continual support. We here at F.P.C. Church and Society Schedule for September

Church & Society, in its 33rd year in our congregation, will resume on Sunday, September 14. This class has a different guest speaker each week talk on issues pertaining to church and society. Our September guests will be: SEPTEMBER 14: Reverend Doug Johnson, Chaplain at Billings Clinic, will address "General Assembly Milestones.” As a Teaching Elder Commissioner, Doug participated in the 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church this past summer in Detroit, Michigan. Among issues that he will discuss will be the background, deliberations, and voting regarding same sex marriage and divestment from several companies doing business in Israel and Palestine. SEPTEMBER 21: Jim Gransbery, retired Billings Gazette Agricultural and Political reporter, will share about "Pope Francis and the Preferential Option for the Poor.” As the first Jesuit Pope, Jim will discuss the history of the Jesuits in South America, their focus on the poor, and the efforts of Pope Francis to reach out to the poor. This timely subject has relevance to the proposed Summit on Homelessness, the November elections, and what, if anything, are we to do as Christians. SEPTEMBER 28: Olena South, Native of Ukraine, will address: "Visiting Ukraine Today.” Olena will dis-cuss the background leading up to the conflict in Ukraine. She will include the effects on the people and her family, who still reside in the western part of Ukraine. Now a U.S. citizen, Olena will also detail the process of gaining citizenship in our country.

Legacy Luncheon coming on Sunday, October 26 Save the Date!

Leave a Legacy for your children, your family, your friends. The First Presbyterian Foundation Board will be inviting

you all to a Legacy Luncheon on October 26th. Learn how just a few dollars a year or gifts in your estate can benefit your Church

family NOW and for generations to follow. Through dollars left to The First Presbyterian Foundation, the Foundation Board has

been able to contribute over $50,000 to the church’s annual budget over the last 3 years. Started in 1990 by a few First Presbyter-

ian members, the Foundation Reserves have grown to over $850,000, in addition to giving large amounts for church items over

the last two decades. The Foundation has received large and small gifts over the years. Gifts in memoriam, in honor of, and es-

tate gifts, all gifts to the generations to follow to benefit the First Presbyterian Church family. Learn more about the Foundation,

Mission News

The Mission Committee has been busy with your help over the summer. The Habitat House is fin-ished and was dedicated on June 30. The family has moved in and are very thankful for their new home. Thanks to everyone who worked on the house, made meals, prayed, and helped build this home in any way. Special thanks to all who gave toward the Noisy Offering in June. $858.67 was raised for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and the fight against cancer. Thanks again to all who donated! The Makokoba Presbyterian Church in Zimbabwe, Africa, is our sister church. We have given

them $1,000 to give to their members for micro-loans. This will help them start businesses. Let’s all pray for this church and this endeavor. Also the Rev. Brent Long made a beautiful communion set that we have used and so has West Park. Now it will be sent to our sister church. We gave Eagle Rock Sanctuary a donation of $1,000.00. Eagle Rock Sanctuary understands that the demands and pressures constantly facing leadership in the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ take their toll in reduced effectiveness and tired spirits. Eagle Rock Sanctuary was to provide a retreat where individuals could recharge their batteries, get away from distractions and re-energize themselves. Jesus Himself set the example be going off on a mountain or to the garden to pray and more than once visited His disciples to "Come ye apart.” Eagle Rock Sanctuary is for individuals and groups; for day use or for overnights. By pursuing knowledge, by touching the earth and by coming to oneness with God, we are renewed to continue or journey of Christian living and leading. Our young friend Josh who lives with his family in Togo Africa, is healing nicely and back home in Togo. Thank you for all of your prayers for this precious missionary family. The Weldon Valley Church in Colorado was flooded last summer. They have expressed their deep appreciation for our prayers and financial gifts. Thanks to many churches, they have been able to repair everything that was destroyed and are working again to serve the Lord in their community and beyond. We will be having a food drive in the fall to help the Lewis and Clark Family Food Program this Fall. Our church will host Family Promise/Interfaith Hospitality Network from September 7-13. Volunteers are needed to help with meals, overnight hosting, set-up, and clean-up. If you are able to help with any of these areas please contact either Marv & Janet Brown or Chris Eriksen. This year the Mission Committee has decided not to have a Time And Talent craft sale as we have done in past years. We still plan to give out $10 to whoever wants it on October 19. But instead of making something to sell, we hope that you will “Pay it Forward.” That is to say do something to help another person. We trust that there is something that you can do to help your neighbor. In doing this, you are participating in Mission. The Mission Committee has thought of a few ideas to get you started. We know that you will have more. You can: Drive someone where they need to go; Visit someone; Take care of a yard by mowing, weeding, water-ing, or raking leaves; Send cards; Give some stamps; Send a package to a missionary or someone else in need; Take care of an animal; Volunteer your time at a hospital, prison, or the zoo; or Pray Make this a family project. What a wonderful way to teach children to love others. The bottom line is we want to encourage you to help God’s children—your neighbors. Please share your ideas with others so we are all excited about the possibilities. Email or give your thoughts and ideas to Sue Bentley at [email protected]. Stephen Ministry Update

Your Stephen Ministry area is needing to increase its leadership team. We had hoped to send people to training over the summer, but that did not happen. Therefore, we will not be starting a training session this Fall as planned. Please continue to pray for this group as we con-tinue to assist congregation members through times of crisis in their lives. Please stop and visit our table at the Ministry Fair on Sunday, September 7!! A dedicated group of Stephen Ministers continue to reach out to people in our church by providing one on one caring relationship. If you could use or know of someone who could benefit from a Stephen Minister, please contact Doris Backus, Jack Bell, or Pastor Dave. Current Stephen Ministers meet for supervi-sion the second and third Thursdays at 4:30 PM.

Grief support group continues every month

A grief support group within our church continues to meet the first Wednesday of each month from 10-11 (please note new time!) in the Pastor’s old officer. This group is open to anyone in the church or community who is experiencing grief. Facilitated by Dr. Don Harr, this group will provide support and help to those facing grief.

On a Personal Note

Marie Reamy has been hospitalized in then ICU at the Billings Clinic for over a month following heart surgery. Colleen Swanson passed away on August 26. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, September 4 at 11:00 AM. A memorial service for Dr. Robert Nelson is scheduled for Thursday, September 11 at 1 PM in our sanctuary. A memorial service for Ellen “Bert” Ward will be held at our church on Saturday, September 13 at 2:00 PM. Ellen died last month at the nursing home in Roundup. We extend our condolences to the family of Denise Finn who passed away on July 13. Denise’s funeral was held in our church on July 17. Denise was our church’s music director for a number of years. We share our sympathies with the family of Bess Hovey who passed away in June. Her funeral was held at our church on June 22. “Our family has received great consolation and comfort in your help and understanding. We shall long remember your thoughtfulness in our loss of Denise. She truly loved our church and all of the members.” Phyllis Brown & Janice Danahy. Special thanks to Doug McShane (Jo Bartels’ son) of Acorn Technologies of Billings for donating a laptop computer for our mission outreach to the Montana Rescue Mission.

Special walks coming Sunday, September 21

The annual Out of the Darkness community walk for suicide prevention will be in Veterans Park from 1-3:30 PM on Sunday, September 21. Join the First Presbyterian Church team by signing up on the table in the gal-lery or by calling the church office. Tax-deductible contributions are needed and appreciated for the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. For further information about this walk, please contact Dr. Don Harr. The annual Alzheimer’s walk will be held at Zoo Montana on Sunday, September 21 with registration be-ginning at 1 PM. If interested in being a part of our church team, please talk with Teri Pattee or Doris Backus.

Block Party Appreciation!

Thanks to all who helped with our 4th annual community Block Party on Wednesday, August 20. We had our biggest turnout yet!! Under the direction of the Fellowship Committee, the block party is one way our church reaches out to our local neighbors by providing a fun night of free food, games, and music. We appreciate all who gave of their time with set-up, serving, assisting with games, and clean-up to make our block party another great success.
