“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” These words from Paul’s letter to
the Galatians express God’s will for the church. He was giving the church at Galatia a tutorial
on how to live together, so that they could be a witness to the world around them. After all, we
can’t very well witness to a Gospel that we do not live out ourselves! This is the example we
are to be setting, living as the kingdom of God in this world.
Recently I heard a quote from Pastor Brian Zahnd in the podcast of his Easter message;
“Every church is to be a garden of resurrection in the wasteland of death.” At first I thought
“Wow, that’s pretty severe!” But as I considered his words in light of Paul’s letter to the
Galatians, I began to feel that he had a very real point. Look around us! The frequency of
suicide and opioid use has actually driven our national life expectancy down over the past few
years. More and more people are walking away from the traditional church model and choos-
ing to be “spiritual but not religious.” Professionals report a steady upswing in cases of
depression and anxiety in all segments of the population, including older adults. The
“sandwich generation” finds itself squeezed between aging parents and young adult children,
both often requiring emotional and/or financial support. You can add your own concerns to the
list; the point is that life is often a very lonely place.
That’s why it’s so important for the church to be a “Garden of resurrection”, where people can
find caring rather than judgment, community instead of isolation, people who will come
alongside and walk with one another in times of weakness. We need to offer the spiritual
nourishment of the “Fruits of the Spirit” that Paul described above. Unfortunately, denomina-
tional churches like ourselves have focused more on structure and survival than growing and
serving “good fruit” to the hungry. Lives are lost while we fight amongst ourselves over
power, property and money.
The way to overcome this issue is not found in corporate structures but in the willingness of
each individual Christ-follower to examine their own life to see what kind of fruit they are
bearing. Do I sow dissension or love? Do I offer grace or judgment? When we each do this
examination it changes the way we act as a body, and we become that garden of resurrection
where the hungry can be fed, the broken can find healing, the stressed can find relief. So ask
yourself honestly, what fruit do I bear, and how does it affect my witness to Jesus Christ?
Shalom!
Pastor Ed

MAY 5 . . . NATIVE AMERICAN MINISTRIES - The people of The
United Methodist Church, Native and non-Native, are creating a
new history. Through Native American Ministries Sunday, we’re
able to equip and empower Native American pastors, congregations
and seminary students to do what only they can do: authentically
worship and serve Jesus. As a member of The United Methodist
Church, your gift, on this day, equips Native congregations—like
New York’s Onondaga Nation UMC and Nebraska’s Native American Sacred Winds congrega-
tion—to worship and serve as only they can. This work, and hundreds of other ministries, are
possible because you give.
May 12 . . . PREGNANCY RESOURCE CLINIC - Walking through a
life-altering decision is not easy, but it is why we exist. Our clients come
from many walks of life and with many different stories. We give each
client the care and attention they need to not only ensure that they are
educated and encouraged, but also empowered to make informed choic-
es. We desire that our clients know that we genuinely care about them
and that Pregnancy Resource Clinic receives no financial gain from their decisions. Our desire
to help our clients is based on Christian principles and values. The Pregnancy Resource Clinic
provides medical, counseling, and materials assistance to clients. a wide variety of pregnancy
support and counseling services. The clinic offers pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and testing
and treatment for some STIs. The clinic offers education on pregnancy options and an abortion
recovery help program. The clinic also can help new mothers with items like diapers and formu-
las and has an Earn While You Learn program for clients with ongoing needs. Your donations to
this mission is given to help support these services. You can make a donation anytime by mak-
ing note in the memo of your check, on your offering envelope, or in the note field of your online
donation.
MAY 20 . . . Jane depends on financial help from the benevolent care
fund to supplement her monthly fees, allowing her to remain living in
her apartment. She has lived there for four years and has nowhere else
to go. Johnny learned how to work on a team with his classmates and
has begun to trust others to help him when he asks. Bob is thankful
that he now has the medicine he needs to treat his heart disease, and
he gets daily reminders to take it. Sue misses her children who live in
another state and aren’t able to visit often. She is grateful for the companionship of her neigh-
bors who eat dinner with her each evening. Madison feels safe when she goes to bed at night,
knowing there is a youth care specialist nearby. All of this is possible because of your generous
support!
When the Golden Cross Offering was first established, the monies were overseen by the Health
and Welfare Ministry of the conference. We know that adequate nutritious food and access to
good medical care helps us to remain physically healthy. But what does the Welfare part mean?
The additional areas cited are mental and spiritual health. Your Benevolent Homes staff has
6
the skills necessary to plan and deliver effective care and provide programs which promote the
healing and wholeness of body, mind and spirit of those in our care. By attending to all of these
each and every day, the whole person is receiving care. Within the Susquehanna conference,
Golden Cross monies help people who live at Bethany Village, Quincy Village, Normandie Ridge
Senior Living Community, RiverWoods Senior Living Community, United Methodist Homes Wes-
ley Village Campus, and the United Methodist Home for Children. Please help us continue to
make a difference in the lives of the young and the old—your friends and neighbors. You can
make a donation anytime by making note in the memo of your check, on your offering envelope,
or in the note field of your online donation.
May 26 . . Peace With Justice & Prison Awareness Your gift encourages peace in different ways throughout Pennsyl-
vania and the world. Peace with Justice grants have helped
transport women returning to society from prison to get to GED
classes, helped fund mission teams from Pennsylvania to build
schools in Vietnam, and provided opportunities for ministerial
interns to mentor prisoners in Dauphin County.
YOUR GIFT MATTERS. Your contribution gives witness to God's demand for a faithful, just,
disarmed and secure world. The United Methodist Peace with Justice Sunday offering makes a
difference through ministries in the United States and around the world. Thank you for your
generous gift!

MY COUNTRY ‘TIS OF THEE (excerpt taken from The Story behind the Song, K. Osbeck) Moved deeply by the desire to create a national hymn that would allow the American people to of-fer praise to God for our wonderful land, a twenty-four-year-old theological student, Samuel Francis Smith, penned these lines on a scrap of paper in less than thirty minutes in 1832. Yet even today many consider My Country, 'Tis of Thee their favorite patriotic hymn and call it our "unofficial na-tional anthem." The emotionally powerful ideas that Smith expressed had an immediate response.
The hymn soon became a national favorite. The stirring tributes to our fatherland in the first three stanzas lead to a wor-
shipful climax of gratefulness to God and a prayer for His continued guidance.
Following his graduation from Harvard and the Andover Theological Seminary, Samuel Smith became an outstanding minister in several Baptist churches in the East. He composed 150 hymns during his 87 years and helped compile the leading Baptist hymnal of his day. He was also editor of a missionary magazine through which he exerted a strong influence in promoting the cause of missions. Later he became the secretary of the Baptist Missionary Union and spent considerable time visiting various foreign fields. Samuel Smith was truly a distinctive representative of both his country and
Here we are into our last full month of the year and of the preschool program. There will be lots to plan for; school wide picnic, Pre-K visit to Lemont, Pre-K graduation, final reports. Of course that is on top of the daily planning and preparation. Caterpillars are on the way to
watch the butterfly cycle. So much learning excitement!
April was busy with Easter activities. Several parents, and even staff, were a bit teary as we had our last Easter Bonnet Parades. Other spring and Easter activities filled the month. We met with parents for the last time to conference with them at the end of the month.
A big thank you for those that supported our fundraiser. We made enough to pay for the end of year picnic. Families will gather at Sunset Park for a pot luck and social time together.
Please continue to pray for the families and staff as we wind down the year and program. All but one of our families have secured placement for next year. Please pray that the transition is positive for them.
FROM THE BANQUET CHAIR — Wendy Franklin 238-0662
The peanut butter egg project is over for another year. We made over 1,000 dozen...that
is more than 12,000 eggs. Wow! I am tired just thinking about it. Thank you to all the vol-
unteers and sellers out there. If you haven't turned in your money yet, please do as soon as
possible. Any questions, please talk with Wendy.
2019 Community Dinner has come to an end. We have served over 600 people not counting
our April dinner. Great fun and fellowship. Thanks to all the volunteers. Rest up...football
season is just around the corner.
Banquet help needed for Thursday, May 2 (lunch) and Saturday, May 4th (dinner) If you
are able to help for either of these banquets, please talk with Wendy.
The Every Daughter Banquet is set for Saturday, May 11th. All ladies
and young ladies of the church are invited to attend - dinner made and
served by the men. A program to follow that will be fun for all. Adult
tickets are $8 and children age 11 and under $4. Buy your tickets on
Sunday morning.

Notes from the Trustees’ David Spotts, Chairman; E-mail: [email protected]
Parsonage - The church leadership has decided to put the search for an accessible parsonage on
hold since we are currently in the process of changing pastors. However, please contact Dave Spotts, Bob Jones or Patty DeCapria if you learn of an accessible house coming up for sale in the near vicinity to our Church.
2019 Projects - The Trustees’ have planned to accomplish the following projects during the 2019
calendar year: grounds maintenance, replace the breakers within three electrical panel boxes locat-ed in the Education Building, conduct repairs and improvements to the playground area, strip and wax the tile floors, repaint the parking lot lines and improve the lighting of the parking lot.
Sanctuary and Lobby Project - A Charge Conference was held on Sunday March 17, 2019 at
10:00 AM to vote on the proposed Sanctuary & Lobby Improvement Project. A total of 100 ballots
were collected and tallied by the trustees’. The result of the vote was 76 for and 24 against. Since
approximately 75% of the church members that were present favored the renovations, the trustees’
will proceed with the project. The renovations will occur overtime in a logical order as funding be-
comes available.
Water Line Project– Sippel Construction will be replacing the water line along East Branch rd
this spring. They will be temporarily storing stone and other materials on church property. As com-
pensation, Sippel will be enhancing the asphalt entryway into the church parking lot from East
Branch Road. (later this summer)

“You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden.” (Matt. 5: 14)
I LOVE JESUS! That’s the first thing I really want you to know about
me. The second is that I love seeing God moving in the lives of so
many faithful through this body we call the Church. And I am so
ready to dream with you and to pray with you, and to watch all that
God wills come to fruition for this family at Mount Nittany UMC and
the community we’re called illuminate through Christ’s love—truly,
a city on a hill!!
Of course, my prayer is that we will continue to build upon the work
of all the faithful here, connecting our community to God in such
ways that they will be transformed, thus transforming the world. For the past five years, I have
been the pastor at Trinity Bellefonte, but spent one year at Grays UMC north of State College. I
graduated in 2018 from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, with a Master of Divinity
degree. I also have a Master of Science degree in Communications from Clarion University of Penn-
sylvania and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. Prior to
pastoral ministry, I was worship leader at Middlesex United Methodist Church near Carlisle, and at
Bethel Church of the Nazarene as well as Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, both in State College.
Professionally, I was a newspaper editor and book author. I live with my two boys, Kostyn Orrie, 11,
and Evan Thomas, 10, our Australian Shepherd, Chipper, and our incredibly sassy house cat, Moo-
Moo. We love the outdoors, and especially sailing and swimming at the area lakes and hiking, run-
ning, mountain biking and skiing in the mountains. And of course, we are Penn State fans! I’m so
excited to meet every one of you and see what God has for us as we begin a new chapter in this sto-
ry together! Please feel free to call, write or text Pastor Chris anytime at
[email protected] or (717) 525-3205, and you may scout him out on Facebook or Instagram
under Christopher Kostyn Passante or CKPassante, respectively.
We will have a celebration of the ministry of Pastor Ed and Donna
on Sunday,June 9th at 12:00pm. More details to follow, but
please mark your calendars for this date and time and share a meal
and afternoon as we thank Pastor Ed and Donna for their leadership
and time spent with our Mount Nittany Church Family.
