LIVING GOD’S CALL

IN A FALLEN WORLD

The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today’s readings outline how the disciple is present in the world.

The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread . . . shelter the oppressed . . . clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation must be sensitive to the urgent needs of others.

Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3).

Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds.

We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent, however, that we have heard the word of God and have been awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that Word and bring that Presence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

February 15-16: 2nd Collection for the Care of Aging & Retired Priests of the Archdiocese

Your generosity to this collection expresses your gratitude for the many blessings received through the ministry of priests. Through your continued kindness we can be assured that they will be watched over and cared for in their retirement.

These priests reside at Villa St. Joseph in Darby, Regina Coeli in Warminster, and various other health care facilities where they continue to carry a message of hope to all by their lives of prayer and sacrifice offered for the people of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. They now depend on you for your prayers and support. Thank you!

My friends in Christ:

Update on the Parish Stewardship Appeal

We have completed the first quarter of Sunday collections since we kicked off the Stewardship Appeal (October 2019) for our parish. In the initial letter that I sent to you in October, I asked you to help us, if possible, by increasing your weekly donation. I want you to know that many of our parishioners responded very generously to this request. The average weekly increase in our Sunday collections has been $800.00.

If this weekly increase in the Sunday collections remains constant going forward, it will help the parish to come close to achieving a balanced operating budget for this fiscal year. While the Parish Finance Council works responsibly to prepare and oversee a balanced parish budget, we have experienced, just as some of you have, some significant unanticipated expenses this year, both for the education center and the parish. Unfortunately, we have very little in reserves to cover these additional expenditures. I have worked hard to ensure that we do not spend more that we bring in, so that we do not fall back into deficit spending.

Please know how grateful I am to so many of you who were able to increase their contribution, thereby helping the parish to remain financially stable. I am forever grateful for the generosity of all of our parishioners.

First Reconciliation

Please join me in congratulating our second grade children who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time this weekend, Saturday, February 8th. They were so excited to receive God’s mercy and forgiveness for the first time in this beautiful Sacrament. We were blessed to have a large number of priests, who were available for our children and their parents. I also want to thank Sister Elizabeth and our second grade teachers and Mrs. Rawski and our second grade catechists, who prepared our children so well for this special sacramental celebration of God’s mercy.
