August 2016 THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE The Pastor Perspective There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven—A time to gain, And a time to lose. ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1, 6 Our Sunday School class is studying the Spiritual Disciplines. I cannot help but think of the disci- plines when I read Ecclesiastes 3. There is a time for study and a time for meditation. There is a time for confession and solitude. Yet, it is always the time for simplicity, service, submission and worship. Sim- plicity is one thing that really goes against our way of life. Do you know how to live with little or much? Paul said he knew what it was “…to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity” (Phil. 4:12). Job knew, too. “…Shall we accept good form God, and not trouble?” (Job 2:10). When Job’s world crashed around his ears, he: …tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. And he said: ”Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:20-21) The Bible goes on to say, “In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing” (Job 1:22). When trouble comes our way, how many of us tear our hair out and collapse in a whimpering heap like Job? Probably many of us. But, very few of us worship. Worshiping means acknowledging God’s worth, bowing down and submitting to God’s authority. When trouble strikes, most of us don’t think God is worth much! Job’s wife told Job to curse God for causing him to suffer (Job 2:9). While sin stalks our earth, there will always be a time to lose. We will lose our health. We may lose our friends. Some of us may lose a wife, a husband, or even a child. But there will be times to gain as well. Not only will we gain new spiritual insight through our trials as Job did, but some of us may well have years of blessing. God does give us all things richly to enjoy! Whether we are abased then, or wheth- er we abound, we must worship. Then all will be right. August is our Steven’s month of simplicity. It is our time to simplify our activities as we look for- ward to September and the busyness of what is to come. Use this time wisely to simplify your life and to set aside the things that distract you from worship, service, submission and study. Take advantage of the heat. It is a great time to catch up on some reading or to spend a lot of time in prayer for our church, our community and our families. Do not waste the time you have been given. Use your time wisely. And re- member, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Prov. 1:7). Make time for God each and every day… and especially on the Sabbath.
