asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.” (John 16:22, 24)

“I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do…. I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world…. While I was with them I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves.” (John 17:4, 6, 12-13)

The translation of these passages which I learned as a child was the Revised Standard Version (RSV) Bible. In that translation, these Gospel verses portray Christ Jesus saying, “…that your joy may be full” and “…so that they may have my joy made full in themselves.”

Translate it as you choose: “complete” or “full,” the meaning is essentially the same. In New Testament Greek, the verb is “PL-ay-R-ah-O,” which is the root for English words, such as, “plenty” and “plenteous.” This is all about being “whole” and “total” and “complete.” The “fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:19) is this “completeness.”

(Continued on page 2)

“I am the vine. You are the branches. Those who remain in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing…. My God is glorified by this–that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. As God has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my God’s commandments and remain in God’s love. I have said these things to you, so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” ~Jesus of Nazareth~ (Gospel of John 15:5, 8-11)

The Holy Scriptures frequently speak of “fullness.” The Word of God offers messages about “fullness of grace;” “fullness of love;” “fullness of compassion;” ‘fullness of joy;” “fullness of life;” and more!

And so, it is apropos to focus on “fullness.” The Gospel of John contains ample mention of “fullness.” Three companion messages are found in chapters 15, 16 and 17. All three are spoken from the mouth of Christ.

“I have said these things to you, so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11)

“So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you…. Until now, you have not

One of the films I consider personal favorites is “A River Runs Through It.” This film is a masterpiece. It is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Norman Maclean, “A River Runs Through It and Other Stories” (1976). It is the story of a Presbyterian minister, Rev. Maclean, and his family. It is an intriguing portrayal of 19th century life. The film is punctuated with poetic wisdom from start to finish. There are gems to be found from its opening lines (“In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing.”) to its closing lines. (“Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.”)

A scene near the end of the film “A River Runs Through It” depicts part of a church service. It is a flashback in which Norman recalls his father, Rev. Maclean, leading worship and preaching, “…we can completely love without complete understanding.”

What a line! This is the “fullness of God”–a faithful expression of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the core of all that Christ teaches: Love completely.

Yes, you and I can love completely. This is what our Savior calls all people to do.

Love completely. You can. It’s not a matter of being “with it” enough, “wealthy” enough, “smart” enough, “good” enough, or anything else. After all, “holy love” is not about who we are. Loving stems from who God is. Call on God to guide you, and then simply offer love. You won’t run short. God’s love never runs out.

Love as God loves–completely! Each new day, give this a try. And keep trying. Strive to appreciate each other’s situation.

As Rev. Maclean preaches, “We can completely love without complete understanding.”

Love completely, Pastor Dan

“The opposite of love is not hate–it’s indifference. The opposite of life is not death–it’s indifference.”

I know not everyone probably loves or even notices my personal style, but those that do might have noticed that I love leggings. Lately, I have found some super fabulous and bright leggings. My own mother describes them as loud. I think that is a nice way of saying…too bright. I know that I am getting older…But maybe it is the fact that I’m surrounded by about 100 kids under 16 weekly or maybe I just never grew up, but I love those leggings. I now have 2 piano leggings and saxophone leggings. Surprise, surprise. The world, however, has a different view on what is acceptable. You know what? I don't really care. I just don't care. The world also has something to say about religion, race, lifestyle etc. And you know what I just don't care. You know what I do care about. Love. The world needs more love… And I love my leggings. Wear the leggings! :-)

Slightly off topic, moving on into the world of music ministry. Choir will be back in session after Labor Day. Rehearsals will officially start August 24. We still have a few more opportunities to participate in larger groups this summer. August 14th will be the men's group. I have the music available in the multipurpose room. I will also send out a link to the recording. August 21st will be the ladies' choir. We will rehearse for both songs on August 10th, and the ladies' choir only on August 17th. While this summer has seemingly flown by, I am excited to get back into a normal schedule.

If you are looking to add choir to your normal schedule. I would love to hear from you. Again, I would love to have more people to call on for occasional substitutes so if you are interested in substituting, let me know.

Finally, my big boy is going into kindergarten. If I seem a little more weepy than usual, you'll know why. Please keep Miller and I (and our whole family) in your prayers as we tackle this huge step in our lives. Thank you all for your continued support and prayers for our family. We truly appreciate it. Lots of love to you all.

Until next time…Smiles, Anna DiVesta 314-609-0865 www.AnnaDiVesta.com

t took me years before I published my first. It took a while. Ten years. Ten Years. I wrote it I remember in Yiddish, and the title was

And the World Was Silent. That was the given title. Publisher didn’t like the title, it was too long. So they chose Night. It came as a surprise. You know. The first printing–3000 copies; it took five years to sell them…. At one point, you say, ‘Let God speak.’…. That has been, since my earliest upbringing–even before the war. I remember that is what my teacher told me, everybody should say, ‘What am I doing in this world?’…. And therefore, I ask myself this question almost every day, because every day something else happens… ‘What am I doing?’ Simply to go from one place to another, if I cannot do anything there, and change things that have to be changed, or console those who need consolation–the main thing…. First of all, to learn to be sensitive to another person. Be sensitive to someone who needs company, or consolation, or faith, or something…. Yes to someone else’s misfortune. I am not defined by my own humanity unless it is linked to yours.”

Getting to know the

Trustee Board

The Trustee Board is an active group of individuals dedicated to providing the Ivy Chapel community with an appealing, healthy and safe haven to worship God. As well, provide an environment conductive to spiritual growth and development of the youth of our congregation.

Officially, the Trustee Board is a five member board with representatives on the following Ivy Chapel Boards: Council, Budget and Finance, and Nominating and Fellowship. The Trustee Board has regularly scheduled meetings held on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30pm.

This board is charged with administering and the maintenance of all church property (real estate, building/grounds and furnishings). The Trustees are also responsible for securing and monitoring both the church office administrator and custodial services.

This board also administers the rental policy for the church, as well, secure insurance and bond coverage. Each member of the board is vital to the support of Ivy Chapel. Work days–two or three times a year–and lawn mowing days are scheduled (by the board) and all church members are invited to assist us.

All Hands Scrub

Saturday, August 20, 9am. Rally Day is Sunday, August 21st and as Autumn is approaching so

let's work together to clean up the summer dust in the church

and outside areas. Members are asked to bring their gloves, brooms, mops and other cleaning supplies to help make the chores go faster.

Highway Clean-up

Please plan to join us for highway clean-up directly after Coffee Fellowship on

August 28. Be sure to bring your gloves and a change of clothes. If you are not able to help, maybe

you can on October 23.

Did you know?

Israel has thousands of plants, and hundreds that flower in August. We even have two in common with them here in the USA. The flower that many of us have in our yards and think of as weeds is the Oxalis or Wood Sorrel.

Another flowering plant that is native to Israel and surrounding countries and also grows wild here is the Toothpick flower also known as Bishop’s flower, False Queen Anne’s lace and Laceflower.

Have you ever had Capers that were part of a food recipe? The Latin name for this little flower is

Capparis sicula (common name is Sicilian caper). The photos shown on the website (provides basic information but several photos) shows that it grows as a somewhat low bushy

plant with oval fruit that is very red inside. (Images look better in color.) If you like flowers, here are a few good sights: www.wildflowers.co.il/ www.wildflowers.co.il/english/plant.aspID=897

Dessert for a Dollar

Sweet treats in August

Sunday, August 14th we will have our annual Dessert for A Dollar Bake Sale in Fellowship Hall after worship.

We will need Bakers to contribute and will have small plates and plastic bags available two (2) Sundays prior to the sale to pack two (2) servings of dessert on each plate. If you are able to contribute baked goods, bring them wrapped as you come to worship. There will be small paper plates and plastic bags available in which to wrap them on the two Sundays prior to the Sale from Kay Kreder at the Dierberg's Gift Card Table in Fellowship Hall.

These small plates make great neighbor, friend or family gifts, lunch box treats, your own dessert or freezing for later. The proceeds this year will be divided between Ivy Chapel and ECH (Every Child's Hope) ECH says they will be able to buy tee shirts for children to attend school with the money. We will not refuse if you wish to contribute a little extra to these two causes.
