ÒBoth a fascinating character studyand a scathing indictment of the roleof the medical-pharmaceuticalindustry in exacerbating the AIDScrisis, the fact-based ÒDallas BuyersClubÓ is one of the best films of theyear.
Working from a screenplay by CraigBorten and Melisa Wallack, directorJean-Marc Vallée (“The YoungVictoriaÓ) delivers a stylistically grittyfilm that might have been made
during the era it depicts Ñ if not for the fact that Hollywood was notoriouslyslow to acknowledge the reality of AIDS. Spurred to action by the likes of RockHudson, who revealed he had AIDS in 1985.
McConaughey is terrific as a man who refuses to let other people tell him howto live Ñ or die. But arguably, Jared Leto is even more impressive, deftlysidestepping caricature to get to his character RayonÕs essence.
"This is the rare film that not only entertains, but enlightens.Ó Calvin Wilson, St.Louis Post Dispatch
For our First Tuesday Salon conversation following the film, PTFF is pleased towelcome back Tom Duke counselor and activist, with his own uniqueperspective on the AIDS epidemic that swept thru the world and continuestoday.

Final Global Lens Dec 5thTHE PARADE7pm Fort Worden School House
It is with deep gratitude we announce the end of The Global Film Initiativepartnership that has allowed 8 yrs of world class film from around the world tobe screened by PTFF. We are currently searching for a replacement for thisdynamic community conversation with film. Stay tuned for details.
The final film in this Global Lens series is THE PARADE. Surprisingly, Parada(The Parade), written and directed by Srđan Dragojević, isn't a solemn arthouselecture; it's a cheeky, crowdpleasing comedy about a former Serbian para whogets a job providing security at Pride. It begins with a glossary of the slang Ð"Chetnik", "Balija", "Shiptar" Ð by which the various factions in the Yugoslavianwar fondly referred to one another, before ending with the one "used byeveryone": "peder" ("faggot"). That sort of worldly cynicism is how Dragojevićgoads Serbian audiences into his comedy's embrace; his lead character, Limun, has to head out on the road to corral former sparring partners from the war Ða Croat, a Bosnian and Kosovan Albanian Ð into his Seven Samurai-stylebodyguard squad. This film was the top box office gross in Serbia for 2011!
The film is subtitled, but this trailer is not and it is still hilarious.
PTFI, Peninsula College and Goddard College are partnering to make thescreening of this film possible. Audience is welcome to attend, free of charge, and participate in a post-film discussion on December 5th, 7 pm at the FortWorden Schoolhouse. Parking permits are available for the event.

Global Lens Continues Nov 7th BEIJING FLICKERS 7pmFilmmaker Zhang Yuan’s feature “ Beijing Flickers”, beautifully portrays thereality behind the cityÕs economic boom. San Bao is a young man left behindby BeijingÕs fabulous new wealth, having just lost his job, his apartment andthe woman he loves (whoÕs left him for a richer man). Even Happiness, hisdog, has run away from him. Lovelorn, self-destructive and desperately aimless,he roams the city with other young dreamers and encounters flickers ofeuphoria amidst his own despair and the urban blight, in this darkly funny, gorgeously gritty portrait of disaffected youth. He did much of his own stunt work, including clambering up the mast of the VirginiaJean during one of many attempts to keep hisboat afloat. We get so engrossed in Our ManÕs
dire circumstances, the filmÕs Spartan designthreatens to work against itself. We know so little about Our Man, his interiorlife remains closed to us, apart from his Job-like determination.ÓScreening a Òreal life sea adventureÓ in a town like ours is brave indeed. THE BUTLER First Tuesday SalonSeptember 3d, The Rose Theatre @ 7pm
Featuring a remarkable cast built aroundForest Whittaker, THE BUTLER, is Òlooselybased on the real-life events of White Housebutler Eugene Allen, who served under eightpresidents. According to interviews, whilesubstantial "dramatic license" was taken withAllen's personal life, everything depictedwithin the White House actually happened. The irony is that the White House scenes areamong the least effective. The movie shineswhen it focuses on the fractious relationship
between Cecil and Louis, whose divergentperspectives on the role of the black man inAmerica provides the point of friction. ForCecil, who grew up as a servant, the way to
advance in life is to be hardworking and non-confrontational. For Louis, itmeans forcing the issue and taking a stand. This conflict, which played out inmillions of families during the 1960s and 1970s, is underrepresented in cinemaand Daniels gives it its due here. Ò James BerardinelliCan we really accept casting Oprah Winfrey, Vanessa Redgrave, Robin Williamsin the context of this story? Has this tale been told too carefully for thetumultuous times it attempts to describe? Join us for a conversation followingthe film.

In the early sixties, singer Darlene LoveÕs mighty voice, often recorded underpseudonyms, helpedhold up producer PhilSpectorÕs legendary
Wall of Sound. Today, sheÕs a grand diva ofrock with annualChristmas appearanceson Late Night withDavid Letterman. Butduring the years between the sixties and today the singer had some toughtimes. At one point, she was surviving by working as a house cleaner and thesound of her own voice on the radio reminded her that her purpose in life wasto sing. The stories of the singersÕ careers are told through contemporaryinterviews and archival performances, supplemented by a chorus ofcommentary provided by such limelight hogs as Sting, Stevie Wonder, BetteMidler, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger. After the film, letÕs talk about music and recording with our own GaryEngbrecht, who has another secret recording life in the music studio.

Jeff NicholsÕ beguiling third featureis an escapade for boys of everystripe, one where girls are bothdistraction and danger. It may beset in the 21st century, but itÕsvery much of the 19th-centurymindset of Mark TwainÕs TheAdventures of Huckleberry Finn.Starring Matthew McConaughey,Reese Witherspoon, Tye Sheridan,Jacob Lofland, Sam Shepard and Michael Shannon, itÕs a modern fairy tale, steeped in the sleepy Mississippi lore of Twain and similar American writers, and with a heart as big as the river is wide.Following the film, letÕs talk about the classics because really, Mark Twaincontinues to inform our sense of adventure, humor and self awareness.Watch the trailer HERE.

introducing at our Taylor StreetOutdoor Theatre on Friday evening, giving everyone a chance to meetthis talented and versatile woman. "Starman" was one of the most challengingfilms she's ever done.On Saturday evening, pass-holders will have the opportunity to view a rare film. Our tribute film to Karen AllenÕs career will be "The Glass Menagerie", a 1987film adaptation of Tennessee William's stage classic directed by Paul Newman. Now about those impossibly hard clues!Clue #1: "An accolade from the stage when well played the part, out ofdarkness, gone at last, a story lived to heart"? It refers to the Theatre WorldAward she won for playing a blind woman in "Monday After the Miracle" onBroadway.Clue #2 referenced "The Glass Menagerie" and her broken glass unicornscene: "Above the shattered sand, a blessing in disguise, magical and mythical, hope shines in their eyes" as well as "Starman": "A star not born, a life not led,
pass
and yet returns from the dead".Clue # 3 alluded to "Karen Allen Fiber Arts" and her yoga practice and studiowhich she created in the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts." Awool twister, Everly sister, Weaving a way through life, Soft mountain ridges, singing bridges, The peace within all life". Finally, the part that helped unveilMiss Allen's identity refers to a scene from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in whichshe and Indy are in the ship's bunk after much running, fighting, escaping. Shemoves closer to touch him and "Ow, that hurts", he said. "Where?" (gentlymoving near).Faintly his boyish smile, "Here and here and... here."Over 200 folks guessed in our contest. Our winner of a photo op with KarenAllen is Dorothy Westlund- she was the first correct answer with 29 other folks,at last count! Congratulations to Dorothy and we promise next year the clueswill be just as hard.

First Tuesday Salon May 7th -The Sapphires"Crowd-pleaser" might be an oddterm for a movie that deals withstate-sanctioned racism, but that isprecisely how "The Sapphires" hasbeen received since its premiere atthe 2012 Cannes Film Festival."Argo" might have been the big
surprise at the Telluride Film Festival, but "The Sapphires" was the emotionalhit. The movie's triumphant vision likely comes from co-writer Tony Briggs, whowrote the 2004 stage play the movie is based on. His mother and aunt weresingers who toured Vietnam. The central performances all have their pleasures. But the film nearlyirresistible on-screen chemistry comes by way of Irish actor Chris O'Dowd andDeborah Mailman. The "Bridesmaid" co-star plays the hard-tippling (andpurely accidental) manager Dave Lovelace, who introduces the women to soulmusic. Deborah Mailman gives eldest Gail a protective and sarcastic edge, thatmakes their vying for the welfare of the group spark.Watch this wonderful clip- the audition in a basement for the USO tour HERE.On Tuesday evening, May 7th, following the screening, join us for aconversation about USO shows, Vietnam and Motown magic.Micha X.
