Passivent Aircool is a range of controllableinsulated ventilators primarily forinstallation in external façades incommercial and similar buildings.

The electrically-actuated dampers providecontrolled air intake and extract in naturalventilation systems, and may also be used for air intake or extract in mechanicalventilation systems. They are particularlysuitable for night cooling strategies, wheredaytime heat build-up is dissipated from thestructure during the night, producing lowerinternal air temperatures with a reducedneed for daytime cooling or air conditioning.Natural ventilation methods can save energy,reduce greenhouse gas emissions, andreduce or eliminate the capital and runningcosts of ventilation or air conditioning plant.

PERFORMANCE

Ventilator performancePassivent can advise on the number andsize of ventilators needed according toair flow volume required (see Services,back cover).

New and improved thermal insulation performance The average calculated U-value of the ventilators for the whole Aircool range has been improvedto 0.86W/m2K in wall applications, one of the best in its class.

Fire performanceMaterials used for internal frame anddampers when closed achieve a Class 1rating when tested to BS 476: Part 7.

Weather performanceThe external louvres provide 98.6%(Class B) rain rejection whenindependently tested at BSRIA to BS EN 13030. When tested to BS EN 1027 the closed ventilators arewatertight at over 1000Pa pressure.

Air leakage performanceWhen tested the air leakage rate of theclosed ventilators is 0.57 m3/hour/m at50Pa pressure. The linear metre lengthis defined as the perimeter of the unitplus the total length of the louvre-to-louvre contact. This equates to anapproximate value in terms of face areaof 9.7m3/hour/m2 at 50Pa pressure(depending on unit size).

Controls and sensorsVentilation airflow is continuouslyvariable by means of 24V modulatingactuators. Ventilators can be controlledby Passivent’s range of thermostaticcontrols or programmable controllers,or linked to a building energymanagement system. Passivent also offera range of control sensors fortemperature, CO2 and wind for exposedlocations.

The Hybrid Plus2 Aircool ventilatorcombines the features of the Aircoolventilator with an innovative air temperingand mixing unit utilising a single energy-efficient fan.

It has been primarily designed to be used ina single-sided ventilation strategy and tomeet the requirements of the FacilitiesOutput Specification for Priority SchoolsProgramme Phase 2, Building Bulletin 101,‘Guidelines on ventilation, thermal comfortand indoor air quality in schools’ and Building Bulletin 93, ‘Acoustic design of schools: performance standards’.

The system has been developed to provide a simple cost-effective solution for specifiers and main contractors. With a focus on indoor air quality and thermal comfort, the Hybrid Plus2 Aircool isthe ideal product to incorporate into schoolsand other educational buildings.

Air quality and thermal comfort Heating and cooling are important inmaintaining a comfortable indoorenvironment, together with the provision of good air quality and the removal ofpollutants, especially important inmaintaining CO2 levels to below 1,500ppm.

The Hybrid Plus2 Aircool system can provideventilation up to 150 l/s via the fan operationoffering an energy-efficient means ofmaintaining thermal comfort in a ‘freerunning building’. The mixing of fresh airwith internal room air is an integral part ofthe design of the unit which reduces the riskof cold draughts during cooler periods.

The system is controlled by using a PassiventiC8000 intelligent controller which providesfully automatic control.

Energy efficientThanks to the energy-efficient fan andthe ultra-energy-efficient passive mode,power consumption is kept to aminimum.

ScalableOne unit can accommodate up to 16occupants. The addition of a second unitcan accommodate up to 32 per room.

Mixing modeIn winter, colder spring and autumn periods the Hybrid Plus2 Aircool tempers the incoming air with warmer internal airbefore it enters the space, thereby minimisingthe risk of cold draughts for the occupants. By mixing and utilising any excess of heatgains within the space, there is no need to use additional energy to warm the fresh air.

Warm internal air enters the unit at ceilinglevel and is also discharged across the ceilingonce mixed to ensure thermal comfort levelsare the highest possible.

Cooling modeIn peak summer conditions, the energy-efficient, low power fan can beactivated to promote air movement, keepingthe ventilation strategy operating andtemperature under control.

When the building encounters high heatgains, the fan can be activated to purge the space more rapidly than a passiveventilation system. The fan speed willautomatically adjust to suit the temperatureand CO2 requirements within the space.

Passive modeDue to the low airflow resistance of thesystem, the Hybrid Plus2 Aircool is able tooperate in a passive mode without any needfor fan assistance. This mode offers single-sided ventilation to provide an equivalentarea of 0.054m2 and is highly cost-effectivedue to the lack of energy required tomotorise the fan unit.

THERMAL AIRCOOL

The Passivent Thermal Aircool has beenspecifically designed to supply buildings withwarm, fresh air during cooler weatherparticularly when the Hybrid Plus2 Aircoolis not suitable due to inadequate availabilityof “free heat” from the room itself or arequirement for higher airflows than can beprovided when in passive mode.

The Thermal Aircool will also provide afresh air inlet in warmer conditions, whenair warming is not required thus providefresh air ventilation throughout the year anda secure night cooling strategy in warmerweather.

The Thermal Aircool system incorporates alow resistance airflow heater coil, which hasbeen specially designed for naturalventilation systems and is connected into themain central heating system of the building.An integral sensor clipped to the coil reportsthe temperature of the incoming air so thatthe water flow and temperature can beregulated via third party heating controls.When combined with the Passivent range ofnatural ventilation controllers, themotorised damper ensures the correct level of ventilation is supplied.

The Acoustic Aircool range is available inwall and window versions. The range hasbeen developed to meet increasedregulation requirements for soundreduction, and the increased noiseexposure resulting from the greater use ofbrownfield sites.

Independent test data to BS EN 20140-10,ISO 140-10:1991 is available on request,with detailed performance figures for eachapplication.

Depending on requirements, acousticventilators may have a single or doublerow of internal acoustic chevrons, acousticliners. For special high noise reductionrequirements, Passivent can design andmanufacture bespoke ventilators tomaximise sound reduction and minimiseairflow resistance so as to achieve targetair change rates.

Passivent Aircool acoustic façadeventilators can be complemented byPassivent Soundscoop� and SoundscoopiAT (intelligent airflow technology)acoustic ventilators for internal airtransfer.

Passive stack ventilationThis design using passive stack ventilationwas successfully adopted in a multi-storeybuilding to meet fire regulations and reducerisk of ‘cross talk’ (ie sound leakage between floors).

Natural ventilation was achieved by passiveinduced cross ventilation before entering thestack. Fresh air was introduced at thewindows and drawn across rooms, thenthrough Aircool dampers, and extracted athigh level through Aircool windowventilators located at the top of the lightwell/stack.

Aircool insulated dampers were used incombination with fire dampers to maintainthe integrity of fire protection betweenfloors. Acoustic chevrons were fitted behindthe Aircool dampers to the louvres to provideacoustic attenuation between floors. Aircooldampers positioned in the rooms gave theusers controllability with individual room airvolume control, and provided thermalinsulation during unoccupied periods.

In exposed locations Passivent secondaryweather baffles were fitted behind theexternal weather louvres to provide a Class Aweather rejection performance. Aircoolextracts can be located in high level windowframes, behind weather louvres, within aterminal arrangement or in purpose-designed parapet walls.
