10.Choose A Theme. Having a focus will help you plan and execute your party. Several months before your party date, brainstorm themes with your guest of honor (see theme suggestions).

9.Make Reservations. Popular party venues fill up early. Once you have your theme and know you will need a location away from home, reserve your site two to three months in advance.

8.Find Supplies Online. Shop local when you can to support your local economy, but for those hard-to-locate items, don’t burn up time and gas searching for what you can find easily online. Just make sure to place your orders at least a month early to allow for shipping time and returns if anything is not what you’d expected.

7.Send Out Invitations. Evite.com wins hands-down for quick and easy party invitations. Just select a theme, add in your guests’ email addresses, and send your invitations. Two weeks notice is usually just the right amount of time. But if it’s a busy time of year, add another week or two.

6.Order The Cake. The local big-box or grocery store sheet cakes are perfect for a kids’ party. Order one week ahead for pickup up on party day for the freshest results.

5.Tackle Your Local Shopping List. Despite ordering ahead online, you probably still have few items you need to pick up locally. Buy them at least a week ahead.

Planning a memorable birthday event can be the highlight of your child’s year, if you maximize the fun and minimize the stress. Increase the magic and decrease the madness with

this 10-step checklist so you can start early and get ready gradually. If you want to plan your party in one fell swoop a few weeks ahead, this list will help you do that, too.

The Savvy Party Planner: Countdown To A Stress-Free Birthday Celebration

PARTY GUIDE 11 atlantaparent.com

Countdown To A Stress-Free Birthday CelebrationWho Can Help?

n Both parents need to contribute. Don’t forget to factor in Dad’s strengths before, during, and after the festivities.

n Babysitters or neighbor teens make great party helpers. I pay our sitter to attend because I always need extra help, and I also want her to share in making memories.

n Exchange party help with a friend. You help with her child’s party and then ask for the favor back for your child’s party.

n Just ask! You never know when a guest’s parent might enjoy helping and you might make a new mom friend this way. Once you have the final attendance list, use evite.com to inquire if anyone is available to pitch in.

n Some people make better “special guests” than helpers. Siblings of yours or the guest of honor may fall into this category, as may elderly grandparents or visiting relatives. For peace of mind during the party, only invite those you know in advance will be gracious helpers.

4.Recruit Helpers. Why try to do everything yourself when you can have so much more fun at your party with plenty of helping hands? (see suggestions).

3.Curry Favors. Favors don’t have to be expensive or intricate. For a home party, go simple, fun, and inexpensive. Be as eco-friendly as possible by offering favors in a reusable container (see suggestions). If hosting a party elsewhere, consider letting the party be favor enough or offer a small treat to guests on the way out, such as a lollipop or a candy necklace.

2.Set Up A Day Ahead. If you are ordering any large food deliveries like pizza, place your order a day ahead. Don’t forget to check online for any discounts or coupons. Then tackle as much prep work as you can. Decorations? Food preparation? Party favors? Activity prep? Everything will go smoother on party day if you take care of as much as you can the day before.

1.Party Down! Get a good night’s sleep. Allow at least two hours prior for set up and one hour afterwards for clean up. Then enjoy every memorable moment. Designate a party photographer to document the day.

Birthday parties once were a rhapsody to sugar – cake, sodas and ice cream – and enough for seconds if guests wanted another slice or scoop. There’s nothing terrible about a once-a-year overindulgence, except maybe the stomach ache that follows it, but why not have just as much fun with a healthier menu?

Follow these suggestions for perfect party food:

n Go Old-Fashioned: Remember those ants-on-a-log from yesteryear? Kids will still love them! Spread nut butter or cream cheese on a celery stick then top it with raisins or cranberries.

Healthy CelebrationsTweak the Party Menu with These Fun Treats

n Sweet Start: Try pretzel sticks rolled in melted dark chocolate and then rolled in options including coconut flakes, nuts or sprinkles. Use the pretzels as a utensil to dip in yogurt. Dark chocolate is one of the world’s best sources of antioxidants, which helps protect us from illness. Bonus: For a fun party-time activity, let your guests roll up their sleeves, and then roll their own pretzels!

n Seafood Pinwheels: These colorful tortilla wraps filled with tuna, brightly colored veggies and avocado sauce are packed with omega-3s. The wraps turn into bite-sized pinwheels or “sushi” when sliced.

n Serve-Yourself Sippers: Kids – especially the younger ones – love the independence of serving themselves. Skip the juice boxes and set out a couple of mason jar dispensers. Fill one with water and fresh fruit, the other with bubbly water and different fruit or veggies like cucumbers. Pint-sized guests will love watching the fruit through the glass and test-tasting their favorite.

Smith, mother of 9-month-old Max, is a registered dietitian and a specialist in obesity treatment and prevention at Atlanta Medical Center. For more about health and nutrition, follow Smith’s blog at 360familynutrition.org

n Accessorize the Good Stuff: Bananas dressed as minions or cuties (those easy-to-peel oranges) jazzed up with basketball stripes make fruit choices more appealing.

n Put a stick in it: Serve fruits on a skewer or a Popsicle stick. Cut chilled pineapple or watermelon into medium size triangles and place a stick through the end. Not only will the appearance be more enticing, but the stick will lessen the mess.

n Have Your Cake: But bake it yourself with a few healthful substitutions to reduce or replace the oil, sugar, or refined flour, and cut back on the amount of frosting. Try replacing a third of the oil with applesauce or remove a quarter of the sugar. Mention your substitutions to no one – they will never be able to tell the difference!

n Burn Off the Calories: Plan sugar- and fat-busting activities. Classic games such as breaking a piñata or pinning the tail on the donkey will keep them entertained. Also consider balloon burst, in which children jump around popping balloons with prizes inside, or mummy race, when they race each other after being wrapped up in toilet paper.

War Games Tactical Laser Tag

If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to play your

favorite video game in a LIVE ACTION setting..then War Games Tactical Laser tag is for you! This new type of laser tag is the future, and its showcased in Roswell’s 7,000 square foot war zone.

The objective is to get kids off the couch and into the battle, where teamwork is a must! A timer displays how long each team has maintained control and flashes the winner at the end. The taggers each have real scopes that players use to aim at their opponents head sensors.

The war zone was designed by Hollywood set designers and themed from a story created for the Georgia location. There are war soundscapes, sentry turrets and plenty of props to keep the experience authentic. The war themed party rooms are perfect for birthday parties. How to Make Your Child’s Birthday Extra Special

n Bring out the baby book. On your child’s birthday, take time to look at pictures, and tell stories about the day of her birth. Recount what happened and how you felt when you first held her in your arms.

n Put birthday surprises in your child’s lunch. You can decorate lunch bags for younger children with stickers and glitter. Put “Happy Birthday” notes in older children’s lunches. And don’t forget to stick in a birthday cupcake or other favorite treat.

by Kate Wicker

When you celebrate your child’s birthday, you’re setting aside an entire day to commemorate his life. Here are some creative ways to give your child a birthday they will never forget.

n Arrange a day to spend alone with the birthday boy or girl. This is a great way to make your child feel special. Visit the zoo. Go to a local museum. Take a stroll through a butterfly garden. Hike a nature trail. Attend a sporting event. Find the perfect outing to meet your child’s interests and then relish in your time together.

n Pamper your child. After tucking him in, give him a long back rub and share funny stories about his childhood. If you have a daughter who likes her hair braided or styled a certain way, go all out on her birthday. You can also let kids soak in warm bubble baths, but be sure to supervise them for safety.

n Write your child a letter every year. In the letter, talk about what she’s doing at this stage of her life. You can also include snippets on what’s going on historically from big national events to popular songs. On each birthday, read the letter from the previous year. When your kids are older, you can compile the letters and make a book to give to them on a special birthday or at the birth of their first child.

n Make a birthday scrapbook or photo album. Take photos of each birthday celebration and put them together in a birthday memory book. Take the album out each year on your child’s birthday and enjoy the photos and memories together.

n Celebrate your child’s birthday with a treasured story. Go to a bookstore with a kids’ section and pick out a book for you to share together. Find a quiet corner and read the tale. Then purchase it as a take-home birthday souvenir. Don’t forget to sign and date the book’s inside cover.

n Plan a birthday scavenger hunt. Hide a small gift under your child’s pillow and include a clue. When she wakes up, she will open the gift and discover a clue that leads her to another gift and clue until she has several little gifts to start out her day.
