Practice With Nouns and Verbs…

Before showing the pictures cards, clip art, or photographs have your students name five nouns around the classroom. Then have them name verbs that go with the nouns said.

For example: nouns – teacher, student, plant, lamp verbs – teaches, learns, grows, shines

Next, show students different pictures. Have students say a noun and then a verb for each picture.

Possible nouns would include: boys, children, or kids. Possible verbs would include: eat, slurp or lick.

Extend the activity by having students add a noun following the verb. Ask – What are the boys eating? Response -ice-cream

noun verb noun Boys eat ice-cream.

Continue by adding adjectives. Adjectives describe nouns. Ask – What kind of ice-cream are the boys eating? Possible responses – yummy, delicious noun verb adjective noun Boys eat yummy ice-cream.

Next, extend this activity by using adverbs. Adverbs describe verbs. runs quickly, cries loudly, shines brightly

Find picture cards in which students can easily add an adverb. Ask - How do the horses run? Response – quickly noun verb adverb Horses run quickly.
